Technically, that’s 100% true. The Sabres always had the option of not acceding to his desire to be moved.

But I view it as they traded him because they had to. It is simply an untenable situation when the team captain and face of the franchise demands to be traded. Especially after the five years of futility that was the previous rebuild. Time to move on.

Yeah, I'm never going to get to "they had to."

Sure, after Jack made it clear he no longer wanted to play in Buffalo. But as @LGR4GMpointed out, KA first tried to accommodate Jack by adding pieces before last season. It was only after the season went south that KA pulled the trigger on the rebuild, imo.

Just because Jack didn't want to be here for a rebuild doesn't mean KA was obligated to care.

They traded him because they wanted to.

Bergeron is one of the best, most complete players to ever play the game. Not that I disagree with your overall point, about needing a collection, but that the drop off from Bergeron to the next guy wasn't extreme is a testament to their team building ability, not a mark against Bergeron being a star. Bergeron was/is absolutely a star. When you are one of the top 5/10 centres in the game for the duration of your career, if he's not a "star", that's just semantics.

I would bet most hockey fans don't even think about Bergeron. He's one of the best players in the game and he gets zero attention. I like that.

I think this is the way. Amass a depth, relentless team instead of 2-3 All Star talents.

I envy the Bruins for what they've had with Bergeron, Marchand, Chara, Krejci, etc. You can hate these guys all you want but, minus Chara finally moving on, the Bruins have been the model of stability for a very impressive term.

Don't love the trade in a vacuum. You can't replace an Eichel.

The only way we "win" it is if he comes back less than what he was.

I do like the players we got and the personality of the core Adams is building.

Mostly, I'm just glad it's over. Onward and upward.

If we're lucky we end up with a collection of players similar to what the Bruins have had for the last decade. No obvious number one star but just a bunch of good to really good hard working guys with a good leadership core that knows how to play a team game.

There's real risk there, for sure. If he were to get the fusion, I'd say he'd almost certainly return to form -- but with diminished quality late in his career and certainly diminished quality of life post-career. The ADR is a huge unknown. I wonder what happens now that he's with Vegas.

This is basically the only thing I'm really curious about at this point. The trade and the subsequent return is whatever. There's a whole other chapter to this saga that is only just beginning.
