The Senators without Dom are quite a story. They haven't missed a beat. Sometimes a big injury does that to a team.

Yesssss master, hmmmmmmm, the brain transplant has worked! :) Honestly, I don't think I remember it either. Too painful.

Two days after an emotional win over former goalie Dominik Hasek, the Sabres fall flat at home against former captain Michael Peca in his return to Buffalo. The Islanders shut out the Sabres at HSBC Arena, 3-0, but Peca does not score. In fact, in four games against the Sabres that season, Peca tallied neither a goal nor an assist and finished -1. The loss ended a modest three-game winning streak for the Sabres, their longest of the 2001-2002 season.

After a 5-2 loss to Tampa at Marine Midland Arena, the Sabres announce that they have traded Matt Barnaby to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Stu Barnes. The Sabres, who have slumped since just after Christmas, respond with three wins in a row and only five losses in their last 17 games.

Mike Grier scores with 4.6 seconds left in the third period to give the Sabres a wild 6-5 win over the Flyers in Philadelphia. The Sabres overcame the news that head coach Lindy Ruff's daughter was suffering from a brain mass, not to mention an early 2-0 deficit and a shaky performance by goaltender Ryan Miller, who allowed five goals before being replaced by Marty Biron to start the third period. In the third, the Sabres outshot the Flyers 14-1 and outscored them 2-0. It was the Sabres' fifth straight win, extending their overall hot streak to 12-1-2, and their 20th one-goal victory of the season. The win epitomized the spirit of the 2005-06 Buffalo Sabres.

Yeah, with the benefit of 20/20 eyes in the back of your head, they did overpay for Gratton. But Darcy did fix the "Gratton Problem," didn't he? Yep, you kind of pine for the days when Darcy would regularly fleece his counterparts. What happened? Did word get out? Watch out for ole Darce, he'll pick your pocket and leave you smiling...

They did play at Washington on that date. Dave, this is why I need you to help write these things! Incredible memory. I don't remember who the Sabres played last night. :)

Indeed! One of the most dramatic days in the history of a fabled franchise. I just wish John Facenda or James Earl Jones could read those words. Well, I guess Facenda is not available.

Wait, the Sabres were rusty but the Thrashers were not? Was Atlanta playing NHL games somewhere during the break? And if it's the trap that explains several poor performances this year, the Sabres better figure out an answer for it.
I won't agree with Steve the Troll, but I do think fans have be somewhat realistic here. Any motivation to finish finish in the division or conference (or league) is going to be surpassed by the motivation of a lot of opponents desperate just to get it. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Sabres go .500 the rest of the way. Not that it means that much... you can take the top seed in the conference and $4.99 and get a minute's worth of phone sex.
I don't see the games, so someone who does please assure me that Ryan Miller is not taking a step back at this stage of the season. This is about four or five games now in a row where the red light has been on a lot more than usual. That's really the big unknown about this team -- no one knows how Miller is going to respond down the stretch of an NHL season and in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

March 1, 1998
Dominik Hasek makes 36 saves for his eighth shutout of the season, and Miroslav Satan accounts for all three goals as the Sabres blank the Capitals 3-0 in Washington. The win extends Buffalo's unbeaten streak to 12 games, two shy of a franchise record at the time. And, yes, for Satan haters, one of the goals goes into an empty net.

February 28, 1996
At Ottawa, Derek Plante scores with 24 seconds left in overtime to give the Sabres a 3-2 win over the Senators, one of five game-winners on the season for the center, behind only Pat LaFontaine's seven (in half a season). It's Buffalo's fourth win in a row. They're around .500 and within striking distance of the playoffs, but just two wins in their next fourteen games seal their fate -- the last game at Memorial Auditorium will indeed be the regular season finale against Hartford. As for Plante, he is enjoying the best season of his career, although the next year he will have fewer points and lead the team in scoring.

Wilf Paiment scores the only hat trick of his time in Buffalo (one season), and the only hat trick of the year for the Sabres, in a 4-3 win over the Blues at the Aud. The Sabres won for the sixth time in seven games, one of the few bright stretches in a season that saw them finish 16 games under .500 and miss the playoffs for the second year in a row.

Thanks for the link eleven! This is why I love the Internet. Wow, that net looks pretty grungy. Did goalies pee on the ice inside the net in those days? Yuck.

Afterwards, Dominik Hasek, whose domination over the Rangers came to an end in the game, said the Sabres played "stupid," while captain Peca questioned the team's heart.

What are you driving at, Knight?
The Sabres ended up with three second-rounders in 2001, one coming from Tampa along with Chris Gratton in 2000. Not sure how we ended up with the other one. But we got Derek Roy and Jason Pominville in the second round, so that was certainly a nice draft. Do you think we should have kept those other picks?
