  1. Great to see Fitzy score and get some personal redemption after his horrendous giveaway in the Ottawa zone led to the Sens' shorthanded goal. Then again, Biron has to stop that shot. Geez.

Rock has it right. Once the ref says to himself he's going to blow the whistle, whatever happens in that millisecond before he does is moot. I know it sounds crazy, but that's the way it works, and it actually makes sense. What makes no sense whatsoever is what were they reviewing on that goal tonight? And why can't the ref step to center ice, a la an NFL ref, and explain why the play is being reviewed, then go back out there after the decision and explain it? WHY?

There's no conspiracy against Buffalo. Come on. It doesn't seem this way to a fan, but the mistakes do tend to even out.

  2. A good period for the Sabres, but nothing to show for it. A cynic would say Alfredsson's goal was a Marty Special, coming in the final minute. But, hey, it's Alfredsson for crying out loud.

Good to see Mair throwing his body around.

Sabres need to take advantage of a shorthanded Sens team that doesn't seem to be mentally in this game.

At the Montreal Forum, the Sabres take a 2-0 lead in the first period of Game 2, but the Habs go on to score the next seven goals and win going away, 7-3. "When they start coming," said Sabres' defenseman Tracy Pratt about the Canadiens, who lost only 10 games all season, "it's like a tidal wave." With a 2-0 lead in the series, Montreal is thinking sweep as the series heads to Buffalo's Memorial Auditorium for Games 3 and 4.

  4. April 4, 1973

In Game 1 of the first round of the playoffs at the Montreal Forum, the Sabres' Dave Dryden makes 33 saves and Craig Ramsay scores the first playoff goal in Sabres' history to give Buffalo a 1-0 lead, but the heavily-favored Canadiens come back to win 2-1 on a third-period power-play goal by Yvon Cournoyer. Dave Dryden's brother Ken is in nets for the Habs; it's the first time in playoff history brothers have faced each other in goal.

  5. Terrible penalty by Hecht in the third period, leading to the tying goal. Tucker made him look like a fool.

I look like a fool too for writing that! As bad as that looks knowing all we know now, the point remains you just can't take a retaliatory penalty late in a close game. Jochen's human, though, and must have known right away his knee was hurt. The frustration has to be impossible to overcome.

  6. Well, Lindy's in a pickle now. How can he not reward Biron with another start on Wednesday? But if he does, and Biron is great again, you have a serious goaltender controversy. Is that a bad thing though?

Terrible penalty by Hecht in the third period, leading to the tying goal. Tucker made him look like a fool.

I just don't know what to make of this team. Take away a near-spectacular performance by Marty, and we're ripping these guys to shreds again. Yet, I see them dominate for minutes on end. It's as if they can be as good as they want to be. What's stopping them?

  7. Maybe the save of the year by Marty to keep the Sabres in a 2-1 lead. He dove across the crease and snared a sure goal from 15 feet with his left glove on the Leaf scorer Pohl. The puck seems to be sticking to Biron, and he's making a strong bid for another start on Wednesday. The bad news is that turnovers increased in the second period as the Leafs took over the game a bit -- faceoffs really hurt the Sabres as well. And still too many dumb penalties, like Briere holding a Leaf at center with four or five seconds left in the period. Great chances for Gaustad and Connolly, who were right in alone and couldn't cash.

  8. Good period. They cut way down on the turnovers, although a few crept into their game toward the end of the period. More energy, more intensity, a few more hits -- and the goalie made some tough saves, which is always nice. Lindy definitely pulled every rabbit out of his hat before this one -- reaming them out in the media, giving them a tough practice, reshuffling lines, playing Marty. If it doesn't work, something is very wrong.

    Let's go Buffalo!

  9. April 3, 1991

At the Montreal Forum, the Canadiens blitz Daren Puppa and Darcy Wakaluk and beat the Sabres 7-5 in Game 1 of the Adams Division semifinals.

    April 3, 2006

The Sabres beat the Leafs 3-2 in a shootout at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, in the process clinching a playoff berth for the first time in five years. Martin Biron is very impressive in a rare start in place of the struggling Ryan Miller, and Maxim Afinogenov scores in regulation time and owns the only goal in the shootout.

  10. April 2, 1972

The Sabres are already out of the playoff race before this season-finale at the Aud. So are the Flyers after Gerry Meehan scores with four seconds left in the third period to give the Sabres a 3-2 win and end Philly's season. Philadelphia needed only a tie to clinch the final postseason berth in the Western Division.

    April 2, 1989

At the Aud, Clint Malarchuk returns to the net for the final minutes of the Sabres' 4-2 win over Quebec. The win wraps up third place in the Adams Division and secures a meeting with Boston in the first round.

  11. I am not happy with what they are doing currently, but remember, the '98-'99 squad went 5-11-5 (the last combined OTL's and ties) from late December through most of February. Things worked out OK that year. If they get swept the next week, then I will worry. Until then, time to get back to the game.

Dave, God bless you for trying to offer some hope. But when I look at the results of the 98-99 season, I don't see 10-4, 7-0 and 5-0 scores. Their worst loss was on New Year's Day at home to Anaheim, 7-2. The Sabres rebounded to beat Calgary the next day 7-1! And although they struggled a bit at the end of the regular season, they weren't getting blown out. In fact, their last five losses before the playoffs were all 2-1 defeats.

  12. I might have embellished the quote a bit. Perhaps I saw a different version of it.

"I still believe in our team, but we definitely have some issues to resolve before the playoffs begin."

It's still a strange comment to make about a team that had been going gangbusters. I guess Danny was prophetic.

Speaking of Briere, Dave, do you really think getting him back will spark this team? We've been looking for sparks for a while now. Nothing lights a fire.

The more I think about it, I blame the goaltending. The first goal tonight was weak and just opened the floodgates. A lot went wrong, but the first thing that went wrong was Miller. The team is a house of cards right now.

  13. This is the way teenagers behave when their parents are out of town (and, yes, it's a Risky Business). Metaphorically speaking, Ruff is out of town. I don't blame him at all. He has more important things to worry about. The character of this team is certainly being exposed. Whether the games have any meaning or not, you don't pack it in. Their coach deserves better.

    Hey Dave.

I don't drink. Tonight might be the night I start.

While it's nice to think that this will all be a distant memory come playoff time, my experience tells me this is more than a fleeting rough patch in a good season. I just can't fathom this team turning things around fast enough. They're going 100 mph down the expressway the wrong way. You can't go 75 in the other direction in five seconds.

  14. Wish I could join the chat, but it doesn't work for me. Please... guys... Schedule. Injuries. Officiating. They don't explain this tailspin. We need someone with credibility to analyze this team's woes -- and it's clearly not going to be Jim Lorentz, who is using the schedule excuse and talking about how the Sabres think they can get back into this game when there's no indication they have a pulse tonight. Roby, please, talk to us.

IMHO, you have to go back to the loss in Ottawa and explain what "lockerroom issues" Danny Briere was talking about afterwards. Such a weird comment after seeing an eight-game winning streak end.

  15. The next person who says it's good the Sabres are getting this slump out of their system before the playoffs... I am going to turn your g-damn lights out, however you do that over the Internet. This is a crisis now, and I don't think I'm being melodramatic.

Lindy is coaching out of fear now -- saying before the game he wondered how much strength the Sabres would have in their legs. Giving his players an out is terrible.

Nightmare time. Someone wake me up.

  16. April 1, 1973

At the Aud, the Sabres beat the St. Louis Blues 3-1 on the final day of the regular season to clinch their first appearance in the Stanley Cup playoffs.

    April 1, 1976

The Sabres announce they will purchase the decommissioned guided missile cruiser the U.S.S. Little Rock for use as the team yacht. And some people actually believe it.

  17. Maybe, just maybe, that style of play still can win in the NHL. Last night's game was a pretty good reminder that discipline, strong defense and very good goaltending will always prevail over a team that takes stupid penalties, coughs the puck up time and time again and has goaltending that allows two or three cheapies every time out.

  18. March 31, 1990

At the Igloo in Pittsburgh, Uwe Krupp scores on a long shot one minute into overtime to beat the Penguins 3-2 and knock the fledgling mini-dynasty out of playoff contention.

    March 31, 2004

The Sabres beat the Rangers at Madison Square Garden to extend their unbeaten streak to six games. The team will not win another game for a very long time.

  19. I wouldn't be so worried if I wasn't seeing a dozen horrendous giveaways a night. Kalinin's cough up tonight was frightening. But it's not just the D. Forwards are trying to dipsy doodle out of their own zone when they could just tap it off the boards to take the heat off. And I'm still seeing blind drop passes on rushes being intercepted and taken back the other way. Make the simple play. Does this team have that ability, or does everything have to be a tic-tac-toe razzle-dazzler?

  20. A lot of things to like about last night, Connolly's amazing passes among them. Their puck possession and offensive pressure is something I don't think I've seen in all my years. They have that puck on a string for long, long stretches. It's something to see.

But I'm still worried about Miller. His game was just aight for me, dawg. He went down like a White House intern on the first goal and was lucky to avoid being scored on several times when he got himself out of position. And three posts were kind. But he made some big saves at key times. I get the feeling as I watch the new NHL more and more that that is all you can ask your goalie to do. We're just going to have to outscore our opponents.

  21. March 30, 1977

In the third-to-last game of the regular season, the Bruins beat the Sabres 4-3 at the Aud. Boston goes on to win the Adams Division by two points.

    March 30, 1981

In a game played at hushed Memorial Auditorium a few hours after the assassination attempt on President Reagan, the Sabres and Bruins skate to a 2-2 tie. A public address announcement during the game informs fans that the president is out of surgery and is expected to survive.

    March 30, 2001

Dominik Hasek records his 55th regular season shutout as a Sabres, and his last, in a 4-0 win over the Thrashers at HSBC Arena. It's the Dominator's third shutout in 10 days. The Sabres clinch a playoff berth and reassume the league lead in fewest goals against. Miro Satan, Chris Gratton and James Patrick are among the scorers, and Steve Heinze chips in with three assists. Seems like yesterday, doesn't it?

  22. March 28, 1979

Rick Martin scores the 20th hat trick of his Sabres' career in a 9-2 thumping of the Bruins in Boston Garden.

    March 28, 1999

Dixon Ward scores in overtime as the Sabres beat the Penguins in a matinee game in Marine Midland Arena.

    March 28, 2003

Taylor Pyatt records the first hat trick of his Sabre career in a 4-1 win over Montreal at HSBC Arena.
