Gary Bromley is forced to make just 20 saves to record his fourth ? and last ? shutout as a Sabre in a 5-0 win over the Kansas City Scouts at the Aud. http://www.sportsecyclopedia.com/nhl/kansa...y/kcscouts.html It's the Sabres' third win in a row with Gilbert Perreault out of the lineup with an injured knee he suffered on a hip check by Canuck defenseman ??and former Sabre defenseman ? Mike Robitaille. Yeah, THAT Mike Robitaille. Roby could hip check with the best of them. Now the only thing he hip checks is the refrigerator door. Ouch. Sorry Roby. You're the best.

A week after his 49th, Dominik Hasek earns his 50th shutout as a Sabre in the regular season with 21 saves versus Florida at home. Good thing, because the Sabres are in the midst of one of their patented goal-scoring droughts under Lindy Ruff. On this night, Denis Hamel scores the game's only goal with 7.9 seconds left in the third period, blocking a shot in his own zone, racing through center on a two on one break with Doug Gilmour and, seeing that Gilmour is laboring behind the play, fires the puck over the left glove of Luongo high into the top right corner of the net. Luongo had been brilliant, making 35 saves to that point. It's the first of two times in his Sabre career that Hamel scores the winner in a 1-0 game. Hamel's career seemed to be on the rise -- what happened?

In a month of .500 hockey on the way to a second straight year out of the playoffs, the Sabres give their fans a bit to cheer about when Scott Arniel tallies 1:49 into overtime to send the Sabres to a 6-5 victory over Edmonton at the Aud.

Dominik Hasek records his eighth shutout of the season and 40th of his Sabre career in a 4-0 win at Florida. The Dominator makes 33 saves. A modest three-game unbeaten streak ends the next day in Tampa, and the Sabres go on to win just one of their next eight games after that. The Sabres' strong start to the season through late December is just a distant memory.

The Sabres finish a four-game road trip unbeaten after a 1-0 shutout of the Coyotes in Phoenix. Marty Biron makes 30 saves, and Curtis Brown scores the winning goal.

  3. Seems like Scotty's timing was always impeccable. He put himself into some nice situations in his career, like taking over a Cup winner in Pittsburgh with Lemieux in his prime. Even his arrival in Buffalo was a bit of cherry-picking. The Sabres were a stable, successful, winning franchise that seemed on the verge of winning it all through the end of the 70s. What went wrong in Buffalo is a matter we could debate for days. (But the Sabres did have decent playoff years under Bowman in 1980 and 1983.) Actually, it's a bit unfair to suggest Bowman just got lucky in his career. He took over the expansion Blues in the late 1960s and led them to three straight finals appearances. I think the guy can coach! My dream has always been for Bowman to be coaxed out of retirement, and with the backing of a billionaire, wipe out the one stain on his resume. Scotty and Marv getting off the schneid, that would be sweet. :)

In GM Scotty Bowman's first game back behind the bench after firing Jim Schoenfeld a day earlier, Gates Orlando scores at 1:11 of overtime as the Sabres defeat the Montreal Canadiens at the Aud, 5-4. Bowman cited Schoenfeld's failure to properly utilize assistant coach Craig Ramsay's technical skills, while Schoenfeld and several of his players later said the firing was a matter of Bowman overestimating the talent level of the team. "I think Schony was getting as much out of the team as anybody could have at the time," said Ramsay. The numbers prove that statement. Schoenfeld was 19-19-5 in his 43 games as coach. Bowman was 18-18-1 the rest of the way as the Sabres finished in last place in the Adams Division and missed the playoffs for the first time since 1973-74.

Martin Biron has to make only 17 saves and Vaclav Varada scores a pair of goals in a 5-0 shutout of the Mighty Ducks in Anaheim as the Sabres start a four-game road trip. It's Biron's fourth shutout of the season and the only win on the trip for Buffalo.

  5. It's tough to say the Sabres didn't build a pretty good team around him. Not to dredge up an old debate, but it wasn't just a matter of Dom carrying the Sabres to the finals by himself. But you're right -- a piece here, a piece there, some more offense, and you have one Cup, if not two. That's why I lean toward adding offense to this team in the offseason. If Miller is as good as I think he's going to be, let's not repeat the same mistake of going into a defensive shell. Light up the scoreboard and let Ryan stand on his head if need be!

The Sabres fail to record a shot on goal in the third period at the Corel Centre in Ottawa. Naturally, it's a franchise low for fewest shots in one period, tying a mark set in February 1981 in Montreal. Despite only 15 shots for the game, the Sabres tie the Senators at 1 thanks to 38 saves by Dominik Hasek.

Yvon Lambert records his only hat trick as a Sabre in an 8-2 scrapbooking of the Leafs at the Aud. The left winger, acquired at the beginning of the season from Montreal in the waiver draft, scored 25 goals during the 1981-82 season, his only one in Buffalo and his last one in the NHL. Lambert had played for Sabres' GM and coach Scotty Bowman in Montreal.

Sergei Samsonov scores the game's only goal as Felix Potvin and the Bruins shut out the Sabres, 1-0, at HSBC Arena. It's the 22nd 1-0 game involving the Sabres in the previous decade, after only nine such games in the first 20 years in franchise history.

  8. Perreault's trick wasn't a natural. You are right about Gretzky though. The Sabres Media Guide marks Sabre hat tricks that are natural with a pound sign, but there are no such marks for opponents' hat tricks. I didn't think it was possible there had been none scored on the Sabres. Thanks for the info.

  9. Good work, Eleven. An odd footnote is that Curtis Brown's hat trick was the 10th hat trick in a row by a Sabre that was a natural hat trick. I almost doubt the media guide on that one. It's a pretty rare feat, happening only about a dozen times or so in the first 25 or so years of franchise history -- then 10 times in six years? Maybe paradoxically, in a defensive era, natural hat tricks are more common. The guide also indicates that through the 2001-02 season, no opponent had ever scored a natural hat trick against the Sabres. Weird.

For the second straight night, the Sabres' Brent Peterson is awarded a penalty shot. Peterson beats Wings' goalie Greg Stefan at the Olympia in Detroit as the Sabres win 2-1 for their sixth straight win on the road. The night before in Buffalo, Peterson failed to score on Edmonton's Grant Fuhr.

A day after the franchise files for bankruptcy, Denis Hamel scores the only goal and Ryan Miller makes 22 saves for his first career shutout as the Sabres blank the Wild, 1-0, in Minnesota.

  11. January 13, 1972

Between the first and second period of a game between the Sabres and Rangers at the Aud, scratched New York forward Jim Lorentz is pulled aside and told by Ranger GM Emile Francis that he has been traded to the Sabres. Lorentz is promptly locked in the Ranger room for the second period and can't call friends and family with the good news.

    January 13, 2000

Martin Biron (39 saves) and Byron Dafoe (23 saves) both record shutouts as the Sabres and Bruins skate to a scoreless tie in Boston, the ninth in Sabre history.

    January 13, 2004

The Sabres overcome 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to rout the Philadelphia Flyers, 6-2, at HSBC Arena. Curtis Brown had two goals and Mika Noronen made 35 saves, while Chris Drury added a goal and two assists, Jason Botterill had a goal and an assist, and Daniel Briere and Chris Taylor also scored. For the ninth time in 12 games after a seven-game losing streak, the Sabres earned at least a point. Jeremy Roenick was tossed from the game for throwing a water bottle and striking referee Blaine Angus, who did not call a penalty on Rory Fitzpatrick, whose stick came up and cut Roenick late in the game. Roenick was suspended one game by the NHL and lost $90,000 in salary. "Terrible, absolutely absolutely absolutely terrible," said JR after the game.

  12. January 12, 1978

Gilbert Perreault nets his 10th hat trick as a Sabre in a 6-3 loss at Cleveland against the Barons. A month and a half later, also at Cleveland, the Sabres would get revenge, blitzing the Barons 13-3.

    January 12, 1981

One more Sabre of the 70s is a victim of the Scotty Bowman Era: Rick Dudley, who left the Sabres in 1975 to play in the World Hockey Association but returned in 1979, is lost on waivers to Winnipeg.

    January 12, 1997

Jason Dawe scores 10 seconds into overtime as the Sabres defeat the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2 in the Arizona desert.

    January 12, 2001

Dominik Hasek makes 21 saves in a "routine" shutout as the Sabres beat the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, 4-0, to salvage a split on their four-game Western swing. It's the Dominator's 49th shutout as a Sabre in the regular season. Maxim Afinogenov scores a "roll the highlight film" goal, Chris Gratton nets his fourth goal in as many games and Rhett Warrener lays out some bodies in the victory. The fourth Sabre goal is their 11th unanswered in the Duck Pond.
