OK, you all wanted me to get Center Ice. So I did. I got my jammies on, made my popcorn and settled in. "Game not available in your area." WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At the Aud, Sabres' goalie Clint Malarchuk miraculously survives a goal-crease collision with St. Louis' Steve Tuttle that leaves his jugular vein sliced open by Tuttle's skate and the hearts of Sabres' fans in their throats. Nine fans faint in their seats as a circle of blood on the ice gets bigger and bigger with each beat of Malarchuk's heart. The Sabres lose to the Blues 2-1, but no one really cares. All fans care about is whether the Sabres' new goalie is OK ? and he is after emergency surgery at Buffalo General Hospital. As the ambulance raced toward the hospital, Malarchuk asked paramedics, "Can you have me back for the third period?"

In his second game in a Buffalo sweater, Miroslav Satan scores his first goal as a Sabre in a 3-2 loss at Florida. That sweater bore number 81, the first player in team history to wear it. The loss started a six-game winless streak that delayed the clinching of the Northeast Division championship a little longer than anyone wanted. For the record, the team's struggles late in the regular season included two shutout losses to Ottawa, whom the Sabres defeated in the first round of the playoffs. :)

At Boston Garden, the Bruins outshoot the Sabres 56-25. The Sabres win 7-5 behind Eddie Shack's second hat trick of the season.

The Sabres hold the Kansas City Scouts to eight shots on goal in the entire game, defeating them 3-1 at the Aud.

I think I was abducted by aliens. It was 7 o'clock just a few minutes ago, and now it's 9:30. What game?
You gotta love Jeanneret. He's calling the last minute of a 5-0 loss on the road like it's overtime in the seventh game of the finals. The man is priceless.

I wouldn't be all that worried except for Briere's comments after the Ottawa game about lockerroom "issues" that have to be resolved before the playoffs. It's almost like he was waiting to say that, and couldn't, obviously, say it when the team was winning. I don't know, I'm probably nuts.
A couple of losses could work in the Sabres' favor if it takes the conference and division out of play. Let Ottawa and Carolina wear themselves out reaching for the wrong brass ring. Maybe we can chill out, bide our time and even rest a few guys here and there... and most important of all, get back to basics and get our heads in the right place.
I urge calm. Alexander Haig is in charge at the White House. :)

The Drydens, Dave (Sabres) and Ken (Canadiens), become the first brothers ever to face each other in goal in NHL history as Montreal beats Buffalo 5-2 at the Forum.
March 20, 1996
The Sabres trade forward Yuri Khmylev and an eighth-round draft choice to St. Louis for Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre and picks that they would turn into Maxim Afinogenov and Cory Sarich.

The Sabres shut out the Leafs at home, 3-0, for their fourth straight win. Dominik Hasek has to make just 16 saves, and Steve Heinze scores his fifth goal in his first four games as a Sabre. The first day of spring sees hockey fever sweeping Western New York: the Sabres have the best record after the All-Star Break in franchise history, the fewest goals against and the best penalty killing in the league to boot.

Both Gil Perreault and Andre Savard net hat tricks as the Sabres bomb the Maple Leafs 14-4 at the Aud. For the record, Michel "Bunny" Larocque and Jiri Crha were in goal for the Leafs on that unforgettable night when the Sabres scored nine goals in the second period! Two nights later, in a rematch at Maple Leafs Gardens and with Larocque back in goal, the Sabres routed the Leafs again, 6-2.

The Sabres trade defenseman Charlie Huddy and a seventh-round draft choice to St. Louis for Denis Hamel.

Rock, I have to give you credit for what you wrote. Like your model on the left, you have balls. Sorry, couldn't resist. But, yeah, your point has some merit. There have been games this year where the Sabres got behind early only to turn it on later in the game to squeak out a win. It's become sort of their modus operandi. Everyone loves it. But that approach is going to be death in the playoffs against good teams.
-
All in all, not a disaster. The Sabres played what sounded like one of their worst games of the year and still came within a whisker of tying Ottawa on the road. I think that's what the Sabres take from this game, plus the lesson that you can't always come back in the second half of games. That, and Ryan Miller is definitely back. Three games left with the Sens... no sweat.

Chara sounds amazing. That two-man advantage kind of sums this one up. Lifeless.

Make that Tallinder...

Kalinin penalty could kill that glimmer of momentum Max gave us. Damn.
-
Early selfish penalty on Chris Drury for slashing kind of set the tone for this one. Too bad.
Goodfella, yeah they typically come alive in the second and third period, but how will they play in the playoffs? Maybe this IS a new NHL, but historically comebacks are pretty rare in the postseason.
Plenty of time left... if they come back from THIS 2-0 deficit on the road, I will be impressed. :)

Maybe it felt better because of what bob-sauve would call the "first love" factor. I don't know. I do think people tend to romanticize the past.
Here's another way of comparing the Perreault and Hasek "eras" -- Perreault won 42 playoff games in 17 seasons, Hasek 45 in nine.
That's why I said "arguably." :)

Wow, that's being pretty tough on the second- or third-best player in (arguably) the greatest era of Sabre hockey. As I wrote around the time of LaFontaine's number retirement, Satan's numbers compare pretty favorably to Pat's, when you consider the defensive style and era Satan played in. It was a great trade by Mucks!

The Sabres trade Barrie Moore and Craig Millar to the Edmonton Oilers for Miroslav Satan.

March 17, 1991
The Sabres beat the Whalers 6-1 at the Aud to break a 12-game winless streak at home, the longest at that time in franchise history. Their last win in Buffalo had come on January 27.

Sounds like Ryan is sharp. Gotta give Lindy a lot of credit for sticking with him and letting him play his way back. For all the criticism Ruff has taken in the past for a heavy hand when handling his goalies, it seems like this year his touch has been almost perfect.
Tight, low-scoring game. The Sabres will get a lot more out of this than another 6-4 win.
Let's go Buffalo!

In goaltender Gerry Desjardins' first appearance in the Buffalo nets, Gil Perreault records a hat trick and adds three assists as the Sabres romp over the Leafs at Maple Leaf Gardens, 11-3.
March 16, 2001
In his second game as a Sabre, Steve Heinze scores a hat trick in a 4-2 win over Vancouver at HSBC Arena. He of the Shaved Head certainly can use the hat. And the Sabres, who had been hot since the All-Star Break, could use the points as they try to nail down fourth place in the conference and home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Dominik Hasek stops all 22 Pittsburgh shots in a 3-0 blanking of the Pens in a matinee at the Marena. Wayne Primeau scores the game-winner and Mike Peca tallies twice, once into an open net, to back up The Dominator's 10th shutout of the season.
-
Gare and Mogilny for sure, right off of season-opening faceoffs at home, in fact. Not sure about Ray. The media guide says he scored on his first shot.

March 14, 1995
Yuri Khmylev scores 54 seconds into overtime at Florida as the Sabres beat the Panthers, 2-1.
March 14, 2001
Steve Heinze scores on his first shot in a Sabre uniform and is named the game's first star as his new offensively challenged team beats the Rangers, 6-3, at HSBC Arena. Heinze joins Gilbert Perreault, Pat LaFontaine, Alexander Mogilny, Danny Gare, Rob Ray and a few others as Sabres to score in their first game in a Buffalo uniform.
