  1. Or as it's known here, the day PA Sabre Fan lost his mind.

Pretty much. The day dawned with me in love with the idea of Terry (pretty much invented in my mind). And he had me at Perreault. I teared up as he did. But then he kept talking. By the time the editorial board meeting at the News was over, it should have been clear to anyone he was not nearly sharp enough to run an NHL team. The results speak for themselves.

  2. Exactly. People don't remember but Gilbert skipped a couple of games and wanted to go back home because he was homesick and had trouble adjusting after coming from a French Canadien background. Imagine what he would have to be like for a kid from across the globe,

I had never heard that story. Any link? (I believe you.)

First people here are averse to starting new threads, then they resurrect old threads with no explanation!

It's not a good merge. New thread with a question mark would have been better.

  3.

I believe there is some truth to a post in the trade thread about him being trumped by the ex Blackhawks group and Wheeler for alpha dog status. He had a long run with the franchise and wasn't a big part of the room. He may not be a rah-rah guy but his on ice give a schit meter has always been high. He may embrace the youth movement that he will lead. He was a large part of Junior success at the Memorial Cup and World Championship.

Do you think Kane, and not Girgensons, is now the heir apparent captain?

  4. Don't fall in love with the kids. We were warned. If Zadorov is part of some kind of Kane-Bogosian type deal, great. Who cares. We have to, as a fanbase, stop building these kids up into things they aren't, yet, or ever will be. Sometimes, as the Coach Chuck Dickerson liked to say, if they don't bite as puppies, they won't bite as dogs. Which is to say that sometimes men don't always mature.

  5. Just a little correction, The city itself might be bigger, but Buffalo's metro area population is much bigger that Winny's.

OK, but really we're talking about two small cities here. That's what Kane is going to see. He'd probably prefer to still be in Atlanta.

  6. I'd like to posit that Buffalo is a different kind of town than Winnipeg. I think if Kane wants to be left alone here when he's out in public, he'll get that. He won't like the media here, but who does. But I don't think the city or the people will be a problem for him.

I get the feeling Winnipeg was a town with that "everyone knows everyone" attitude. Which can be a little annoying if you like your privacy.

Didn't Drury talk about being approached at Wegman's?

  7. We talked about this over the summer, the "problem" of too few new threads here. Everything tends to get dumped under a generic title. Someone coming to this board last night or today wouldn't immediately see where discussion of the Kane presser is, not that there was a lot of it. So I'm starting this thread. Maybe a mod can port over the presser talk from the trade thread.

    Anywho...

The only pause I got from the performance was his talk about being in small town Winnipeg, the fishbowl of a Canadian market etc. It'll be the same in Buffalo. It's a hockey town and a virtual Canadian market. Oh yeah, it's smaller than Winnipeg, population-wise. (And Winnipeg's population is growing pretty fast.) One help might be less media attention in Buffalo, as Mike Harrington pointed out today.

The pertinent quotes, from the Winnipeg Sun:

“I guess maybe it was overdue,” Kane told reporters in Buffalo, N.Y. on Saturday. “Sometimes things just don’t work. Winnipeg is a very small town, but it’s a big hockey market. It’s a little tougher than a Vancouver or a Toronto, where you can maybe get away a little bit. It’s a fishbowl. Being a Winnipeg Jet was something that everybody knew who you were. They always wanted to talk to you, which is great, and that was definitely one of the things you enjoy. But negative things can take a toll a little bit...."

“....I think that’s what it was, just speculation. I’m not really going to get into the details of what happened. Was I wearing a track suit? No. But it’s something tends to get blown out of proportion, especially playing in a Canadian market...."

  8. Nhl.com just added "enhanced stats" ...... Not sure why they didn't just call them Corsi and Fenwick....but the best I can tell that's exactly what they are.

As with their inclusion in broadcasts around the league today, they look like they are here to stay.

They're descriptive labels. They're trying to edumucate folks like me.

Yes, shot attempts is Corsi and unblocked shot attempts is Fenwick.

  9. Hmmmm. Me likey.

Okay, okay. But the "stats are stoopid" tone and vibe from others (not you, I don't think) is what brings it on.

And I agree: The chips are gonna be some next-level sh!t.

Oooooh, that is such a great memory. Thanks.

No, you're right, I think they're quite stoopid.

  10. Why should a team be credited with possession when they don't have the puck? The whole point of measuring possession is to know who is controlling the play, and what players are best at it. I don't see a particularly good reason to "penalize" a team that is simply regrouping in its own end during a line change or whatever.

    Tell that to Volchenkov.

I don't like the "us vs. them" "we won" approach. After all, the league has been keeping the stats that are turned into Corsi for decades. Adding them up and calling them something, OK whatever. The chips are the game-changer here.

  11. OK, I'll play along. (I'm not actually so virulently anti-analytics as it might seem, I just tend to hate what Corsi has become.) What about an old-fashioned stopwatch? Measure possession by how long the puck is in either offensive zone, no matter who is controlling it.
