  1. Why? Because of a grrl thang?

A grrl I know does not love the name either. But as an Islanders fan she hates the Riveters' colors, initials and logo — all borrowed heavily from the Rangers — so she might by default have to be a Beaut fan.

The Beaut logo is a subtle, more abstract buffalo than we're used to seeing. I kind of like it.

Why does the Pride logo feature Hershey skid marks?

  2. Yep, we're here.  Now let's take care of the business at hand and be done with it.

Done with it? Yeah, until we wake up for many years drenched in sweat, little devil faces coming toward us, then retreating, coming back, feeling like fire ants are on our ballsacks. A price has to be paid for this, even if it's living with, "You tanked for McDavid. Nice Cup, douchenozzles." That is, the same treatment most of us give the Pens.

  3. This is all Terry Pegula had to say when addressing Koelmel in a fairly far-ranging interview with Carruci:

On John Koelmel leaving HarborCenter: “John has moved on. He did a great job at getting the HarborCenter thing going.”

Whatever, I guess. It just doesn't sound like a truly amicable parting.

    See, reading-into is fun, innit?

*This* close to a confession! Maybe HBO can mic Terry up and hope he takes a confessional leak.

    • On Kim Pegula’s role – “If you divide it between the actual sports side and the business side, she’s working closely with (Sabres President) Ted Black and Russ Brandon on the business side, and I haven’t been as involved on that side of it. That’s what she likes to do; she’s good at it. So I actually stay over on the sports side, the actual makeup of the teams and working with how we’re going to build the team, the coaching staff. I talk to Doug every day.”

  4. Let's assume Buffalo really is blue-collar and hard-working. It's a subjective and IMHO trite description, but leaving that debate aside the question is whether any of that should really matter when building a hockey team.

GMTM has touched on giving Buffalo a team that reflects its character.  The owner has said he likes gritty and hard-working players. Nolan has often talked about it. Yesterday, he again referenced the work ethic of the city when he was asked about the idea that fans would boo their team and cheer for the opposition down the stretch.

Sabres coach Ted Nolan expects the city’s blue-collar fans will appreciate his team’s effort.

“I don’t think you have to say anything to this city,” Nolan said Tuesday. “This city knows what it’s like to work. It’s a city full of workers. I don’t know anybody in this town who would go to work and not give their best, and that’s what we’re trying to do as a hockey team. So I’m quite sure the fans will get behind that.”

Over the years, I think this whole notion has sometimes been a way of marketing the team, giving the fans what they supposedly want. Think late 80s and mid 90s.

How much of this should actually enter GMTM's thinking when building his team? Me, I hope the occasional comments are just some PR crumbs thrown to the population. Or, if the team ends up reflecting this mythical image of the city, that it's only because that's what makes the most hockey sense to give us what we all really want. I don't want Murray thinking about it at all.

  5. His quotes demonstrate a lack of understanding of geography.

Technically. But a lot of people who live on Long Island don't consider Brooklyn Long Island. A friend of mine from Long Island just said today she would rather live on Long Island than Brooklyn. It is very discombobulating.

  6. Elliotte Friedman's 30 Thoughts are always a good read: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/30-thoughts-oilers-worse-nelson/

Reason I'm posting is the All-Star Game changes Stan Bowman proposed (the idea, not necessarily the exact details). 6 teams of 9 players, 4v4 round robin tournament, 6 minute games. Now that, I'd watch. Maybe reduce it to 3v3?

There's clearly some original thinking going on in the NHL. But sometimes I wonder if the league can't see the forest for the trees. Put your thinking caps on, guys (and gals), and make this game truly the fastest, best and most exciting to watch in the world.

  7. Tyler Myers not mentioned in article about great Kelowna Rockets defenseman..

That's really odd. Doesn't his picture accompany the article tease on the front page of the site?

I think the article you linked might be a sidebar or something. This one features Myers prominently: http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=758763&navid=DL|NHL|home
