As much as Adams has not done to push the team into the playoffs, there is an argument to be made that being that buffer maybe a more important job.
Without that buffer decisions such as taking Alex Nylander over Charlie McAvoy and trading Ryan O’Reilly after he loves his love for the game are made(rather then trying to work towards a resolution) are made.  Jerry Forton would have a much larger say in the final decision on players and  choices such Topias Leinonen would be the norm and not the exception.

Pegula is absolutely holding Adams back. Although he did agree to the 3 Es when he initially took over as GM, there was an understanding that this would cease this past season.  Does anyone think that GMKA really wanted to not make any deals that required salary retention or cap dumps? How about the idea that the Bryam Trade would have been completed a lot sooner with Colorado’s First Round Pick coming to Buffalo had Adams been authorized to take Ryan Johansen as part of the deal. Also there is the matter of the team having only one official pro scout in Jeremiah Crowe.

Pegula still has a reputation around the league and there was some hesitation by some of outside front office hires to join the organization without reassurance they would be able to do their jobs without much interference.

As much as the team has fallen short of expectations, the one area the analytics department has been largely focused on has been the draft something that has demonstrated significant improvement.  Adams is making sure they space they need to operate. They have given input on some of the free agent signings namely Clifton and Johnson. They did give advice  about usage of both players which was promptly ignored by the coach.

I would like to see a scenario where Karmanos and the analytics staff are ones making the final decisions on roster construction in addition to drafting. The reason why I have always mentioned promoting Adams to POHO was so not to lose Karmanos or Ventura. Adams does a good job of keeping Pegula out of a large majority of hockey ops decisions. If they would be free to operate without ownership interference if Adams was no longer with the organization I would not shed a single tear.

I do believe there is reason for hope as the NHL has possibly turned its attention to organizations that have been performing subpar, now that the Coyotes are in Utah. There may have been a few friendly suggestions given to an organization we have a love/hate relationship with. Whether or not the advice is needed is another story.

What has the league suggested that the Sabres do?

It was Chris Drury who led me to conclude that "the greats," the "clutch players" don't so much elevate their game in high-pressure situations as much as they continue to execute at the same level that they ordinarily do when there's less pressure. The "elevation" is -- possibly -- a bit of an optical (?) illusion, as many other players around the clutch player are gripping their sticks too tight, trying to do too much, over-thinking things, etc.

Just a theory. It was something from how Drury talked about his penchant for clutch performances -- maybe a Sports Illustrated (?!) article following that crazy Rangers game ("who else?!").

He said something like if you prepare properly everything takes care of itself. He was a great Stoic.

The headlines aren't even always written by humans.  And sometimes the AI changes the headline multiple times throughout the day in an effort to capture the maximum amount of eyeballs.  The algorithm pushes the language towards the provactive - the goal is to generate traffic and discussion.  Looks like it's working.

AI is better than I thought. It knows last season wasn't eventful (it would see that events happened tho), so it ironically put the word eventful in the headline to trigger me, the leading Sabres influencer on the Internet. Damn.

No.  I tried to add more two way players, but the other GMs reluctant to deal.

Drafting Seiling over Bossy - We knew Bossy was going to score goals, but we needed more two way players.  This was a mistake drafting for need, not BPA.

Trading McNabb for Savard - I hated him spouting off about the fans.  Only I can be outspoken like that.  I sent Mahovlich packing, so why not this kid?  Savard had the checking game we needed, but I should have sent McNabb to rot out on the West Coast.

The only thing wrong with my core was finding a healthy goalie to withstand the playoffs.  That was the difference in the Cup series and afterwards.  Edwards and Sauve took a little time and Bowman benefited from them more than I did.

Yes yes. But did Dodo cut the crust off your sammy?

Are you talking about season 4?  The fan base was still in love with the team.  The team was hit hard with injuries in season 4.   HC Joe Crozier paid the price though.   I thought replacing him with Floyd Smith and then Marcel Pronovost were both steps down.

No one wanted the GM fired either.   By the late 70's it was a mild shocker when Imlach was removed, but replacing him with Bowman was re-energizing for the fan base (but not for many of the players).

Punch, did you love your flawed core too much? Seems 1976 or 1977 would have been a good time to shake things up. In my mind's eye I see you taking your cap off and wiping your glistening, never ending forehead with the back of your hand before answering.

79-80 was quite a comeback year for the team though.

I think the "disdain" is for the absolute bonkers idea that a young man taking a poolside vacay pic during the frickin' offseason makes him too much of a "good vibes" "chill bro" to be a captain. It is just plain silly. Silly, I tell you! A quick search of google images will turn up a relaxing vacay pic of pretty much every "worthy" captain out there.

If someone were to say "I don't think Cozzie deserves the 'C' because his play is still a touch inconsistent for my tastes.", that is a respectable reason. Not, gee - he sure seems to have a good time on his insta-tok or he doesn't look like an NFL linebacker when he takes his shirt off (yeah, that last one is for the "he needs to eat 30 chicken breasts a day and put on 15 lbs of pure shredded muscle by next year" crowd)

OK maybe. But the disdain jab has been coming. Dudacek has been in this mode for a long time. The fans just can't see how great things are. It's the drought coloring their opinions... Certainly not the team. Cozens gets the snark because he disappeared last season.

Dudacek is the progeny of neo and X. He carries on the legacy of superiority and aloofness and sophistication well.

    Damn... That's some good vocabulary.
