  1. Could someone in Buffalo do me a favor...Is the Rangers game on MSG there tonight? I was thinking maybe the Messier number retirement is why they didn't broadcast tonight's game.

Do they still black out Rangers games in Buffalo?

That was a quick period. I thought this game would move by a lot slower than normal since I have to listen to it.

  2. That is an excellent question. I don't think it would but don't know that for certain. Part of that is we don't know who the additional defenseman would be, for all we know he may be a strong pp pointman. Also, IF Tallinder and Kalinin are both playing the way we hope they would (and that was the premise for my comment) one or both could very likely fill Campbell's role on the pp as both have good shots, are mobile when healthy, and seem to have a knack for knowing when to pinch. (Granted, neither is as fancy as Campbell, but I don't know that that is necessarily required of the pointman.)

If the answer to the question is the pp does suffer without Campbell, then there are 2 options. Either Tallinder or another D man gets moved to the 7th (press box) slot or Campbell dresses as the 7th D man taking the odd shift on wing and playing as a pp specialist.

During last night's game, I was trying to figure out how many players on this team have scored goals, or at least been productive (Numminen) from the point on the powerplay. I'm sure it's not a complete list, but here's a few: Kotalik, Campbell, Pominville, Numminen, Connolly, Lydman. Basically, we've got a lot of players who seem to make a postive impact from the point. Obviously it depends on who would be brought in with a trade, but I don't think losing Campbell on the point will be too big of a loss, but it is definitely something worth thinking about.

  3. I would really like to see the D have 6 top 4 guys with Campbell as the spare and Rory the emergency D man (or out of the picture due to salary considerations of a potential trade), but if the right forward were out there for the right price, I would consider bringing someone in if in fact Drury's injury ends up keeping him out for more than 2-3 games.

Its obvious what the powerplay means to this team. I wonder if Campbell as the 7th defenseman on this team (ie. not playing every night) would have a negative effect on there.

  4. Dmitri Kalinin might be back in the line-up tonight. If not, Saturday is more likely. I wonder if Ruff sits a defenseman or goes with seven of them like before.

As long as Paille stays with the big club, he should be playing. That means stay away from 7 defensemen. Fitzpatrick is the obvious benching.

  5. oh, baby! i can't frickin wait til friday in tampa! i'll be there behind the net seeing my sabres live for the first time in 3 years! i'd be happy even if they sucked, but with a roll like this? it makes my year! :D

Sure, rub it in. I'll be sitting in a plane during that game. I hate that I have to miss one, but it does give me to opportunity to go to the next 3 home games, so I guess it's worth it.

  6. Pick up a blueliner, call up Thornburn and waive Peters and the Sabres will be on their way.

I'd rather have Peters as the 13th forward over Thorburn. The kid needs to be playing every night and that won't happen in Buffalo with our top 12 healthy. Now, if someone gets hurt, by all means call up Thorburn, but don't waste him away in the press box.

  7. Of the 16 games you have listed? Only 4 are wins against teams that would qualify for the playoffs today. Only 1 is against a team higher then a 7th seed (Dal#3).

I'm not saying don't enjoy it. I'm just saying things might get tougher when the Sabres start playing some of the better teams.

We didn't have Briere for a good portion of that streak. That has to count for something.

  8. Hey, I'll admit I'm hard on the guy, but he doesn't have to win a cup to change my opinion. I have a long memory, and not easily convinced. Maybe he really has turned himself around. I'll be more convinced if he continues to play consistently. So, he's hot right now. Let's say Ruff sticks with him, and he has a rough night. His next start does he put up a good game again, or does he collapse and get ice cold? If he continues to play consistently, I will be convinced.

And I'll admit, I'm biased because I'm a big Miller fan. I think he is going to have a great career, and I'd rather not see what happened to Mika happen to him.

Here's one thing that says a lot to me about Marty right now. Look at the names of the last two goalies who won 10 and 11 consecutive starts: Hasek and Brodeur. Marty's in good company right now. He may or may not keep playing at this level, but the main difference between this year and the last 3 is that we have a good team. We don't need Marty to perform at this level to win most games (but it sure does help).

Miller is the future. I don't think there's any question about that. Right now, I think it's in the team's best interest to keep Marty this year. People are about to start seriously talking about this team being a contender, and I don't know if a rookie goalie will be able to carry the load. I think that Marty and Mika will both be gone in the next 2-3 years, but for at least this year, Marty has earned the right to be able to try to carry this team.

  9. Please explain the softies he's let in in the past few games.

I didn't pay too much attention to the 2nd one tonight, but Dallas really moving the puck around well and I had no problem with the first.

My main problem here is that you've made Biron out to be Satan. There is nothing he can do short of winning the Cup now that would change your opinion.

  10. In my opinion, overall, Miller is the better goaltender. Everyone who is advocating riding the hot hand in net, just consider this, what if the team would be playing even better with Miller in net?

The last loss in god knows how long was with Noronen in net. How exactly could this team be playing better? Sure, they could be scoring more goals, but that's not a product of the guy between the pipes. Oh, and to the person who replies to this by saying they're more confident in front of Miller (an idea I've never bought into), please explain the 11 consecutive wins in Marty starts.

  11. That was far from pretty, but a win's a win. Still, I hope I don't have to watch them blow a 3 goal lead ever again this year.

edit: I just took a look at the standings. Only Ottawa and Detroit have more wins than the Sabres.

  12. I'm assuming the Canadiens have to make it known to the road team well ahead of time that they'll be wearing the white 3rd jerseys. Speaking of those jerseys, why are they allowed to have that stupid vintage hockey patch on all of those jerseys. It's blatent advertising for the vintage jersey lines. What's next, jerseys like the one's they wear in Russia?

  13. Yeah, terrible coverage all around. Glad I'm not the only one who noticed. My favorite of the night is when the color commentator was trying to figure out if a penalty had been called when the net got knocked off the moorings (I believe it went all the way to the back boards). Great attention to detail.

That was former Sabre Bob Errey, not exactly the best color commentator out there.

Did anyone else notice how many times they said "Mike Grier (or any other player), out there in a penalty killing role"? That one got on my nerves a bit.

  14. If Marty plays well we will win. I'm guessing we'll then see Mika vs. the Sharks. Also hoping that the 2 of them get a competitive thing going, with each playing enough to keep the other one on edge.

I think we'll see Ruff continue to ride Marty for the next few games. You can never be too careful with a groin injury. A little extra rest for Mika can't hurt.
