Let me offer a different scenario… Buffalo fans, in particular older fans, have an entrenched, unwavering mental construct of what a hockey player has to be. If you’re considered to be a top player, you either fit the Buffalo mindset mold or you will suffer the fate of endless comparisons to Sabres players of 45 years ago, suffer the fate of failing to live up to endless cliches, or suffer the fate of not being equivalent to the best players who have ever lived.

The reason why this is difficult to answer, from a fan’s point of view, is we don’t know what Granato has told the team and each player to work on. It did not result in a win, so it’s hard to make note of any positives.

I think it may have just been one quote from him. If no one else can remember it then I am probably mistaken.

I know why the perception was there, but from the moment he was drafted he openly criticized that perception and made his wishes known that he didn’t want to be that guy. I think this is probably a situation where you could blame the scouting department for not uncovering his attitude.

But I don’t think you were getting Tom Wilson regardless.

But I think the problem was he hated that part of his perception, and he just wanted to be known as a skilled hockey player. Thus we traded a guy that didn’t want to be the guy we thought we were getting. I’m just amazed he has stuck around for 560 games.

There is more than one player who can be contacted. Jack does not own the entirety of player opinion for ever more.

Maybe if he did that, he would’ve gotten the information he wanted? 😬

The answer to that is an easy one. You just tell any other player that Jack has already said multiple times he wanted to leave the organization. At that point, he wanted us to assume all the risk without the benefit of him playing here anymore. We decided to let him go to another organization that would be invested in his future.
