Playoff Goaltending

Thank you Mr. Obvious.

I made no comments on what steps Darcy would need to take to achieve a team that had a top defense and a 2-3 million goaltender (except of course to pay his #1 goalie 2-3 mil. :) )

FWIW the median Salary of the top 30 paid goaltenders is 4.5 million.

If we had 15 skaters from the first round plus Timonen...I might be talked into it. :D

Just because there are goalies out there playing well for only a few million, it doesn't mean they are easy to get. And typically, once they atrat to play well, they will want more money, so if you want to go cheap on goaltending, you have to be prepared to have a carousel of goalies changing every few years, or you better build up a shutdown defence that will make up for it or a high scoring offence, like the Caps had in order to make up for weaker goaltending. The Flyers are where they are despite the goaltending, which many have and continue to say is their weakness. They are strong everywhere else that it allows them to not have to rely on a goalie to bail them out. Thats the exact opposite of what Buffalo has done in the past, where the team usually relies on a great goaltender (Hasek) to keep them in tight games with a low scoring team.

What is easier to do? Build a complete shutdown defence, (or a high octane/scoring offence), or build a well rounded team around a solid goaltender. Right now Buffalo has a great goaltender with another potentially good one coming up (instead of getting rid of one, why not build something similar to Boston?) and a young defence.
