Enemy Territory

I am going to games 1 and 2 with my friend who is an avid Flyers fan. The earler game this year in Philly I saw a drunk guy in the bathroom yelling about how much he hated the Sabres while pissing and when he turned around a guy in a Sabres hat was standing there and he started yelling at him and then pushed him and he spilled his beer on someone and the guy goes "look this A hole just spilled his beer on you. The Sabres fan just stood there and took it and when no one else cheered him on the drunk guy moved on. I have another friend who is a big Sabres fan that always wears his gear and he has no issues. He's a pretty good natured guy who doesn't look threatening. I'm not wearing colors tonight as Its just not worth the potential hassle. I have a job that would not accept black eyes from fights. I will cheer my boys on, but I'm not going to invite any issues.

Go Sabres!!!

i went to game 1 with my wife. We were both wearing sabres clothing. There were a couple of people calling us a-holes on the way in. When we got inside wells fargo and took the escalator up, we were greeted by hundreds of people calling us that. It was so funny i started laughing. My wife was intimidated but i told her not to worry. I saw about 7 other sabres fan there. Thats it. I didn't get into it with anyone while i was getting food or going to the bathroom. Also, once in awhile people would shout "F&&K the Sabres."

The fans next to us were all older to middle aged people that were extremely nice and impressed with our bravery ( stupidity.) In fact one older gentleman ( who was about a foot taller than me) promised to escort us back to our cars. We sat in section 202 row 2, awesome view.

I did feel like Indiana jones walking into the temple of Doom initially. Things could have been alot worse had the people we were sitting next to not been so well mannered and mature. Its not an environment i would not take a child to or the faint hearted.

As thousands of people were swearing at us i tried to explain to my wife ( the uninitiated), We were outnumbered 19,000 to 2 so laugh at them and let the score speak for itself. Take the insults as a compliment because many flyer fans were stunned we were even there in the first place. As i expected, the demoralizing loss by the Flyers made the walk back to our car pretty tame. The flyer fans took out their anger on their underperforming team, not us.

Having said that, i dont look that threatening and generally laughed in a good natured way with the flyer fans cause WE WON ! If i had a babysitter, i wold go back for game 2.

We parked at the holiday inn parking lot which was only 5 dollars and took about 10 minutes to walk to. A little isolated at night but totally beat traffic getting to the highways as we live in NJ. Plus you get to see the Phillies stadium.

Good job in carrying the colors in enemy territory! There is no way I'd ever get my wife to go again if what you described happened to us. She was upset enough at the Canes game a few weeks ago and we had 4000 other Sabres fans watching our backs.

Went to game 1 with a buddy we both had jerseys on surreal walking in and having everyone chant A-Holes. We embraced it but their fans as a hole were pretty quiet after the first 10 minutes. We ended up next to another pair of Sabres fans in gear and we were the loudest in our section (214) we were at the top row which was nice to. Security came up with about 2 minutes left to make sure we made it out alive because we were so loud the entire game! anyone going to game 2 wear your gear and be loud!

I went to Philly about 3 years ago to see the Sabres. I have a college friend who is a Flyers season ticket holder and he took me. I'm not one to get all stupid in someone else's building so I didn't get hassled but they do have the typical fans that don't like to see the opponents colors.

I will also add that same friend took his 2 kids to this last Flyers/Sabres regular season game in Philly (i think Buffalo won 5-3?). Anyway he tells me that his kids hate Buffalo fans more than any. I said why? He said there were some groups of Sabres fans in the buidling who were acting douchie, swearing and gooning it up in the hallways. The same thing to be honest that we hear about Sabres "mobs" in Carolina, Columbus, Atlanta, etc.. I defended it saying that mentality in not unique to Buffalo. I'm sure Flyers fans would act like jerks at HSBC and we know about Leafs fans.. Anyway, it always bothers me that Sabres fans take it too far on the road when they are in that mob mentality. It makes us all look like jackasses. The regulars at HSBC always seem pretty calm to me so maybe it's a road thing.

I live in south Jersey...surrounded by Flyers fans...moved here from NYC. I was really worried about going to a game at Wachovia Center, but sucked it up for my birthday in March. After a horrible experience on Long Island for the playoffs a few years ago...I was really scared. I go to tons of Phillies games, been to soccer games at the new stadium in Chester etc.

The game in March was a totally awesome experience! First off, I am female, so maybe I won't get the same verbal teatment that a guy would...but I saw/heard non of that. The flyers fans were knowledgable, emotional and loud...they were fun. One fan came up to me to tell me how happy he was that we have a new owner that cares and that he loves the old logo etc...went on and on.

That being said...I am never, ever rude to fans in their arena.

If you show up, get drunk and act like an ass...you are in for an earful. I want to trek my Eagles fans friends up to Orchard Park in the fall for the game against the Bills...but I fear that the idiots at that asylum will embarrass me...they have in the past. You give a lot of beer to anyone and bad things ensue.

My advice, act the way you would like Flyers fans to act at HSBC Arena and you will be golden.

I appreciate the fact that they give a damn about hockey...cuz most US fans don't care. Philly is a great sports town...

I have seen the Sabres in NYC, Long Island, Hartford, NJ, Philly, Dallas and Chicago...best experience so far has been Philly.

Curl up into a fetal position whimpering 'if we only had Hextall, if we only had Hextall, if we only ...' ??? :o

How does that help anything?
