Sabres in the market for a top-4 D, goaltending

The Sabres would like to upgrade in goal, but our understanding is that GM Kevyn Adams’ top priority is landing a top-four defenseman.

On goaltending, assuming they don’t want to rush the development of Devon Levi, the Sabres need to get an experienced NHL starter onto the roster before training camp begins. Hellebuyck has to top the list, but he’ll be pricey. The Jets will be looking for young team-controlled assets in exchange. The Sabres do have plenty of those — from Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen to Peyton Krebs to even Casey Mittelstadt.

If the Sabres balk at the Hellebuyck asking price, they could also get into the market for John Gibson, who will also be pricey and would likely prefer to play for his hometown team, the Penguins, but might see the upside in the Sabres’ lineup and consider that a better long-term fit.

Of course, surrendering zero assets and shopping on the UFA market for a goalie might be a better option. Even if the Sabres do extend Rasmus Dahlin on a monster contract after July 1 — probably eight years in the $10 million range — they will have cap flexibility.

Gibson headlines Ducks’ loaded trade class

The feeling is that the 29-year-old Gibson (No. 7 on the trade board) would be amenable to a move to a contender because the Ducks are not going to be a playoff team for years. His contract is reasonable — $6.4 million for four more years — especially if you believe he can still be a top-10 NHL goalie playing behind better defense.

Gibson has a 10-team no-trade list. The suspicion, though, is his preference would be one of three: Pittsburgh, Vegas or Los Angeles. He probably would be OK with New Jersey or Buffalo, as well, given their upward trajectories.

If Gibson lands in Pittsburgh than Tristan Jarry be available. He's been good not great for the Penguins but last year he might have been beset by an injury he acquired in the Winter Classic according to https://www.pensburgh.com/2023/6/13/23758348/2022-23-season-in-review-tristan-jarry  The same article reports he might be looking for a 5-6 year deal which might be difficult if he going to just be a spot starter while Levi develops unless the Sabres can find a fair contract for him as a part time starter he could be on a short list of options.

Not sure whom you mean to encompass by "[m]ost of the NHL," but be assured that this is precisely the deal the owners intended to make: Get a significant premium on franchise expansion fees in exchange for the expansion teams' having a good chance of immediately being competitive. The successes of Seattle and Las Vegas have been by design.

I suppose but it just irks me that expansion teams come in with a complete clean slate as to me it's far easier in a salary cap driven league to start at zero then rebuild on previously failed attempts (see Sabres rebuild as example). So I'm a disgruntled far that these new teams can be good right out of the bat meanwhile I have to endure what feels like a constant rebuild that's been going on since we lost Drury, Briere and Miller.

So does winning. He was miserable last year when they didn't make the playoffs.

To think Eichel may win a cup before McDavid is mind numbing to me. Oiler fans can't be very happy.

Most of the NHL should be unhappy, as these expansion teams are doing far better than I would like. As to me I want expansion teams to struggle or be bottom feeders for at least 3-4 seasons. Yet here we are with teams like the Knights and Kraken making the playoffs and the Stanley Cup Finals within years of starting up.

Trotz to Nashville.  Nashville will be back and they will be hard to play.

It amazes me how out of touch Pegula and his GMs were with hiring head coaches.  Rolston, Nolan, Bylsma, Housley and Krueger - Epic bad choices.  Unfathomable that these were our HC's during the drought.

Bylsma wasn't a bad coach IMHO, it's just GMTM failed to bring the right guys or just the combo of Eichel, O'Reilly and Kane was just a toxic group. Toss in Lehner was horrible in shoot offs for whatever odd reason.

  5. As Levi shows you can find goalies late in the draft and to me it's a position you draft every year because you never know what you could unearth. Toss in if you have too many you can usually trade one away for more than you invested in them to begin with.

As usual with the NHL....something really fishy went on here and the fish stinks most from the head.

I agree, I don't understand why they don't show the balls fall as the whole card thing is convoluted as all heck.

Big markets don’t have issues with tickets like small markets. Plus how many Cups did they win. Gee enough is enough with that crap!

Yet am I'm sure the NHL sell more Bedard jerseys if was a Blackhawk vs Anaheim or Columbus.

It better not be Chicago. ***** them. Yes they were bad but the tank job was on purpose. They need to feel the pain.

But the NHL has to let them rebuild with Kane and likely Towes gone next season.

B- : Greenway and Stillman will likely be better in Buffalo than they were earlier this year. They got a reasonable pick for a player that wasn't going to sign.

Could've been much better, but they did improve the team and didn't sacrifice any of the future for it.

I'm not sure a 2nd round pick seems like a lot for a 3rd line winger with limited scoring potential. Yes we could need the physical presence but feels like a lot. Then we added for a 6th/7th Damn for a prospect which is meh. Color me unimpressed. The Petersen trade to me the only one that feels was a good trade for us.

I think it's the kind of deal that you make if you are trying to make a deep run into the playoffs.  We're just trying to get there.  If Kane really wants to come here, I wait until free agency.  The defense is the only position I'd be upgrading through trade at this point, mostly because I don't see a goalie deal coming.  The kids up front need to be making this run together at this point and the expiring contracts of Girgensons and Okposo aren't going anywhere at this point.

I doubt one be available I'd still be looking for a starting goalie, UPL been good but not great. Comrie's been horrible and Anderson while good is only good for spot duty.
