  1. Starting from the goaltenders. I think it is obvious we are going in to next season with UPL and Levi. I think another year in Rochester would not hurt Levi it would only do him good, but if the season not starts well I hope they won't hesitate and bring in a replacement, they can probably find one cheap. An UFA veteran like Lankinen(or someone else) is not interested to be back up for one year and maybe also share games with Levi.

On defense the already mentioned Pesce, Roy, DeMelo is top names that might become very expensive. But we need a RHD so I hope Adams is trying. An interesting option, a trade where I think all parts might be winners, both players and teams, is Byram to Calgary for R Andersson.

Of forwards Stephenson is a favourite as a dubble cup-winner. Monahan could improve our powerplay. I think of Östlund as a same type of player as Teräväinen, so why not bring Turbo here? Rod Brind'Amour has always praised Teräväinen for His work and two way play. As an outsider I pick Arvidsson, I just like him, he seem like someone who hates to lose.

I am not that good att fourth line players, most interesting players has already been mentioned, but I think Craig Smith (DAL) needs to be mentioned.

The obstacle is the internal salary cap placed by the owner.
There were deals to be made last offseason for veterans but the incoming salaries would have pushed beyond that cap, so they were nixed.
Adams took the job and carried out Pegula’s effective, efficient and economic plan, with the understanding that there would be a time to switch back to a spending mode.
The thought amongst the Front Office last summer was to start that process, unfortunately the person who sets the budget did not

I feel sad reading this. But it explains a lot. And it makes me think that the owner does not understand this sort off entertainment business at all. But most people here knew this I guess.

I think Adams better see and realize that Cozens is playing like an average 3C.   He better find a center to help this team tget better next season.   There is a big hole to fill.

Agree. I think he will be a really good player but it will take more time than us fans was hoping for. Is the problems a cause of him being another player rushed?? I can't tell. A wise rule for Adams to keep in mind would be to not sign young players rushed into this league to long term contracts.

As it seems Vegas will not afford to resign Stephenson, I think a second line with Benson - Stephenson - Cozens could be what we need. And Cozens as a winger would not expose his biggest weekness and give him time to work on that next to a two time cup-winner.

Brind'mour was an assistant coach with the Hurricanes for years before becoming the Head Coach. Just go back and read some of his qoutes about Jeff Skinner and you will see what @Perrualtforver is talking about. If you look what the Hurricanes did that off-season it was basically 2 moves - remove Skinner for nothing, trade Hanifan for Hamilton.   They then become one of the best teams in the league.  I think getting rid of Jeff Skinner was a huge part of their turnaround, along with getting a coach that wont allow players not to give their all shift in and shift out.

Im getting a pretty good sample size of Jeff Skinner on the 3rd line this season --- he gives you nothing at all.

So the answer to our problems are a Skinner buyout and getting a big RHD like Hamilton. Easy!!

  5. Adams and Granato is not going anywhere. The Mitts/Byram trade took the chances of reaching playoff imo. and that is on Adams and he will not fire Granato because of that. He probably would not have done it anyway, but definitely not now.

And if you get paid millions as a player, you are ready to play and ready to compete when the puck drops. Does not matter if you are 18 or 35. They definitely know that also. It is on the players, not on the coach. Then there might be some routines and ways they prepare themselves as a team that is not suitable. But to me it has looked like individual weakness more than a team thing.

But I agree that this along with inconsistency is what is keeping the team outside of playoff.

  6. On my sons team there are not even one player playing right, they are all left. I just put a stick in his hand and let him play the way that is more natural for him. But I think it is easy to learn a kid one way or the other and since most players here play left, I think I could have improved his chanses to make a career by putting a right stick in his hands and learned him play with that. But I am sure he would not make a living out of hockey either way.

  7. I am interested in the norwegian Brandsegg Nygard, norwegians are usually hard to compete and it seems like he is also. But having him ranked as high as he is tells that it is a weak draft this year.

Helenius is joining team Finlands roster att their first camp heading to WC. Not many that age has done that. Sabres prospect Viljami Marjala will also participate.

Dahlin looks to be up on goals since last year but way down on assists.  A simple reason he is down on assists? The guys in front of him (that he plays with most often) just aren't shooting as well. Tuch's Shooting percentage is down from over 16% to about 11%.  Thompson from about 16% to only near 11% this year. Skinner down from 14.5% last year to about 12% this year.  Cozens nearly cut in half from over 14% last year to about 8% this year.

The thing is, those guys are getting about the same number of shots per game as last year, and a month or so ago the advanced fancy stats showed that at least with Cozens and Thompson, they were getting shots from the high danger areas (quality chance) about the same as last year.  Meaning, Dahlin is getting the pucks up the ice and on to those guys sticks, they just aren't putting them in the net and he is getting less assists because of it. (which also impacts his plus-minus in a negative way).

And as for those 'league leaders' and 'Norris candidates' ahead of Dahlin....Quinn Hughes in Vancouver. Makar. Josi. Hedman.  What do they have that Dahlin doesn't have?  Not any (or many) more goals, but they do have forward on their team that put the puck in the net a lot better than the Sabres forwards, giving them a lot more assists than Dahlin gets.  Vancouvers top 4 goal scorers up front average almost 20% shooting percentage between them.  Colorado's top 3 guys are at 13.1, 15.8, and 17.7. Tampa's top 4 guys have almost 140 goals between them and are average about 20% shooting.

Buffalo? Every single player on the team with at least 10 goals is shooting under 13%.

And when you break down the Sabres shooting..."high danger" chances (directly in front of the net), the league besides the Sabres shoots about 20%. The Sabres...14.1%.  Colorado?  20.5%  Vancouver?  23.4%.

So, Dahlin not being near the top of the league in points and assists (along with goals) might just be more of a function of the players he plays with being SO MUCH worse than the rest of the league at putting the puck into the net, even from prime scoring areas.

As you said, leading the league in ice time, improving corsi, improving hits, improving blocked shots....if he had the assists that would go with better play up front, he just might be in the Norris converstation this year (and when looking at those numbers, if the Sabres were even AVERAGE at how much they produce from the high danger areas, they would probably be in the playoffs right now.

I have never looked at shotpercentage, so this was a good post from a view I do not look at stats.  Can you tell more about the league average percentage? The shot percentage that Col and Van has seems very high to me. And the Sabres low.

Which is exactly the same as Philly with their "subtractions."   Hayes was an allstar for them but Torts said he had to go, he went, and they are better.

And Trotz got rid of Duchene and Johansen. It is common sense, work hard or leave.

  10. I am all in on getting rid of Skinner.

    Jost, Olofsson will be gone.

Krebs, Girgensons and Robinson, I am not against them to be extended, but Adams should try to find better players that can improve the team Before he gives a contract extension. But there are better run franchises with cap looking for same type of players.

We can't trade away Power because of a second year slump. That if something will bite our *****. Even if seeing his play along the boards is frustrating. Byram is earning less money and is a cup-winner, meaning he is the one that can bring us a top six center or winger, with years left on the contract, or looking for a less salary than Mitts.

I think the thing that favors the Avs over a team like the Oilers is their blueline. When you have Makar and Toews back there (mostly Makar) who carries the puck a LOT, then you don't need McKinnon (or the other forwards) expending as much energy carrying the puck up the ice.   I agree I do not like when forwards get well over 20 minutes of ice time average for the season...but the teams that do that with a STRONGER presense on the blue line are, at least slightly, better off for it.

I still thing Toronto has a chance this year ane next year to take a deep playoff run, but I have doubts as to how thier top 2 lines will hold up having to play every-other-night for week after week after week.  Their top lines don't get a HUGE number for ice time, but when they are out there, they have to work really hard and they are relied on so much.

Carolina, on the other hand, they are just solid.  116 and 113 points the last seasons. On pace for 110 this year after a very rocky start. And they do not wear down ANYONE on the team. Top 4 D-men all around 20 minutes (no one anywhere near 25+ like the Sabres do). No forwards averageing even over 20. Even strength, the top line and the 4th line are only about 3 minutes per game apart in ice time (they really DO roll 4 lines out there)

Funny thing is that when Rantanen came to play for team Finland in IIHF WC he did not play near as good as expected, a reason was believed that the ice time was shared more equally in team Finland and he never found the right pace in his game.

Even being a Sabre fan, My favourite player is Sebastian Aho. As you said the Canes roll 4 lines with small differenses in ice time. What impresses me with Aho is how much points he makes and how much more points than the player with second most points on the team he has.

  12. The offseason is the key to success. There is a lot to be done during the summer. The contracted players need to take their summer practice serious and they need to get the right advises on what to work on.

The GM needs to find and get the missing pieces, and that is a job much harder than summer practice as a player. There are some really big decisions to be made of some of the players on current roster also, Krebs, Skinner, Byram. And yes, I mentioned Byram again, the team is not in balance and they played better the weeks before trade deadline than they do now.

Granato needs a long vacation. And new assistans.

They will make the playoff next year. I still have the faith.

  13. I Still do have trust in Kevyn and Don. The team that they took over was both tortured and abused and the worst ever seen in NHL. It had been pushed under the surface, pulled up and then pushed under again. Not many would even consider to take over a team like that. Four years is a long time in business and the lenght of the playoff draught is horribel, and most of the fanbase is upset and irritated. Still except for this year it has been progress (in some specific areas also this year). But with a young team the progress is not linear and to me another missed playoff was to expect, even if there is so much hope and expectations.

It was not the best way with a rookie GM, a rookie coach, the youngest team and a team captain without much winning experience. But if that was what we got, then what can we do.

When it comes to next season, my strong opinion is that if they are not in a playoff-spot at Thanksgiving, Granato has to go.
