  1. It doesn’t bother me one bit.  You cannot initially just stash guys on LTIR because it is convenient.
If the return date is manipulated (which, BTW, is pure message board speculation), it still doesn’t upset me. Teams should push.  While it is hypocritical to the Sabres Connolly situation a generation ago, things change.

It would have been more fun to watch Vegas squirm their way into cap compliance on the fly mid-season, but those days are coming.

Sadly, they don't need to move him so they can ask for the moon (a top cost-controlled prospect like a Krebs or a Quinn). They're in OK cap shape through the end of Cernak's current contract (end of next season). Then he, Sergachev, and Foote are all up for new deals. Until then, they're going to lose Palat, but they'll be able to patch with veterans who want a chance at a Cup. They got out of their true cap-hell this past offseason.

I agree it isn’t dire. But it is very inflexible.  Point’s extension hasn’t kicked in yet and the Lightning have zero cap space today (and have dipped into LTIR).

    4. The fans who wanted to tank deserve this crap and we are all reaping its rewards.  Until God Has Decided the sins of those fans who wanted to lose have been expiated, we who don't believe in trying to lose will continue to be punished as well.

This is the very first thing I thought of when Eichel (and to a lesser extent Rhino) was dealt. All sins may now be forgiven.

  4. Now I understand.

I brought it back to the new person in charge to keep in line with my POV on the topic.  I don’t believe the Pegulas want or need to raise cash from the hockey team. But this does bring up a curiousity about how much debt the team is carrying.

The ambitious projects you’re referring to are the stadium and potentially the arena upgrade, correct? Were there other stated projects they’re believed to be involved in?

I just find it hard to believe they will sell a stake in the Sabres to finance their portion of a football stadium.

Riffing off this: what do people think of the idea of a 'managing partner'?

I don't mean exactly like Larry Quinn, who was essentially a team president rewarded with an ownership stake, I mean someone who brings in a real pile of new cash in exchange for some control over how the business is run?

It would mostly be about business: the new guy gets the automatic return on investment that seems to come from pro sports ownership and an opportunity to run an NHL team. I could see people recognizing the Sabres as a mismanaged business, with an untapped market of alienated fans ready to relive 2006 and spend "if only...".

Terry still gets final say on most major decisions and the hoped-for benefits of increased revenue streams and franchise valuation, along with the ability to fade into the background and no longer put up with the bashing he's received for running the Sabres into the ground.

It goes back to my original contention of what happens next. I think they have that guy already in Kevyn. Connected locally and league-wide. Played, coached & managed.

I am not the Pegula family banker, but I’ll die on the hill of they don’t need to cash anything out and there won’t be any ownership adjustments.

Which is why it won’t be announced before a stadium deal

You are incredibly well respected by myself and all other posters here…could you please explain the “why” behind this concept?

I realize we are all speculating, but help me understand the motivation of selling a stake in the franchise.   Cuz some cash for funsies isn’t making sense to me.
My opinion: Terry loves the Sabres and is not looking for an easy money equity cash out.

Sure it is, if you need to get 200 mil in cash. It's pocket change but most of the billionaires we know don't have a billion dollars, they have billions in assets.

While I’m not here to argue that point, the Pegulas have plenty of assets to collateralize, including the Sabres/Bills in the form of debt (especially if the funds are to be used for said franchise/football stadium, etc).

And the stadium (or arena, I suppose) is the only thing that they could possibly need that kind of money.

Even their mega-yacht only cost $75M.  You think they want to cash out to buy another one?

The potential fallout from selling a portion of the hockey team doesn’t make a ton of sense.  Especially if a minority owner gets a voice/voting interest. Just not worth it to them.

They two franchises may be under the same PSE roof, but no business is going to look to one side of the house to cover another.  I'm 100% confident they're viewing both teams on their own and as such, that each stands on their own financially.

At the same time, the prospect of building a new Bills stadium is impacting their financial decision making with the Sabres.  They can't keep losing millions as they did in 2019-20:

    https://subscribe.buffalonews.com/e/limit-reached-bn?returnURL=https://buffalonews.com/sports/sabres/sabres-lost-10-9-million-value-dropped-in-2020-according-to-forbes/article_9e2c7828-3a3b-11eb-b9e4-17ec3fa4b12d.html

I could definitely see them selling part of the Sabres to provide some liquidity to put toward a new stadium that, despite an initial proposal, will cost them I'm guessing a couple hundred million.  Especially now that 55% of the Key Bank Arena isn't selling out on average each home game.

I respect your take, but liquidity isn’t an issue for T Pegs.
If your take is to not cross streams and the Sabres are cashing out to invest in the county owned Key Bank facility…I could make a case for that.

  9. You guys…Terry is worth five billion dollars. This isn’t about cashing out 150 million via 20% sale.

Also, throwing their commitment to the Sabres and the region out the window when asking for $700 million for a football stadium from the county and the state would be crazy.

The Bills more than cover any Sabres losses.

    Always has been.

While I’m just some jag off watching the games on tv, I’m totally fine with interference by a teammate when defenseman are retrieving the puck in their own zone below the goal line.
Interference by a teammate gives them time to not get murdered by a forechecker bearing down on them.
But anything in the neutral zone or above the goal line in the offensive zone needs to be called. NHL officiating is awful.
