At least Dallas came back to beat Chicago. Kind of worried about L.A. now. The human chia pet might make the playoffs yet.

I was thinking the same thing. I just looked at their remaining schedule…in their final eight games, they have the Aves and seven non-playoff teams down the stretch.

Can someone please tell me WTF this means?

Are the Amerks going to make the playoffs?

They need to keep winning. Only two teams in the division do not make the playoffs. At the moment, the Amerks are one of those (judged by points percentage).
Points percentage is calculated by dividing the total points in the PTS column with total possible points for all games played(2 pts per game).

Bryson, like 1/2 the players on our current NHL roster, is not a finished product.

The last two games showed what our defence can expect to face in games against contenders. Bryson was not the only one who struggled at times. Bryson and 80% of our D, is young though.  There is still room for growth and adaptation.

Agree. I don’t know what the benchmarks for an NHL defenseman to be considered developed. Is there a generally accepted metric in terms of age or games played?

Bryson is 24 (turns 25 in Nov), and despite being in the Sabres system for three years, has only played 66 AHL games and about 100 NHL games due to Covid shortened seasons.  In a normal year and if he was able to avoid injuries, he would have played in another 80ish games at the pro level.

He is an RFA at season’s end with his ELC expiring.

Has Bryson “arrived” as an everyday NHL player on a good team? I can’t say that for sure.  I guess I would want to know if he’s fully developed as a prospect to make that determination.

So what has GM Kevyn been up to lately?

Went to the NCAA Regional and watched his prized goalie Devon Levi lose.

So you’re judging the GM for making the decision to go to the game?

Then lost a pt a game AHL forward Arttu Routsalainen to a Swiss league team.

This is not a net negative for 2022-23. If he couldn’t crack the lineup this season, he has no long term future with the organization (25 years old as of October, and undersized).

Then went to the Frozen Four and watched all four prized prospects lose.

    What a terrible decision!!!

Then only managed to sign one (Owen Power) of those 5 prospects to a contract (so far).

Another way to look at it is he has signed 50% of the league’s signees so far.

I was curious on how the other 2 top prospects that Jbot considered from Stl were doing this season.  Like Tage, Robert Thomas and Jordan Kyrou have fully blossomed this season.  Both are now pt a fame players, but more playmakers then goal scorers.  Thomas has 60 pts in 60 games with 14g and Kyrou has 63 pts in 63 games with 20 goals.  Also both guys are under contract for one more season.  Tage, while not a pt a game player (yet?), is by far the goal leader of the 3 with 32 in 68 games (tonight not included) and 57 points overall.

I wonder if all 3 guys’ next contracts will be semi based on the others?  Regardless, all three guys will be expensive to re-sign.  If Tage scores 30 again next season, I’d expect a contract similar to Dahlin’s bridge deal.

Tage only has one more RFA season upon completion of next year. So it won’t really be a bridge. You’ll be buying out his potential foray into UFA territory. If he scores 30 again next year, it’ll be expensive.

Eakin is the worst forward on the Sabres and it's not particularly close. He deserves more scorn but this board in particular loves faceoffs and guys who hit stuff regardless of their ability to actually be decent at hockey.

He is slightly above average in face offs, decent in haircuts, and outstanding at throwing neck shade at Eichel.

Other than that, you can expect the negative result whenever he has the puck on his stick.

Has anyone said to themselves, “nice play Eakin” and actually meant it at any point this season?

That's what I meant. Beagle pounded Terry, but he wouldn't have had it been DesLauriers.

As to hard to find, I don't think so. I haven't watched every team this year but I have noticed a little return to the resident 4th line tough guy on most teams. Similar to the Rangers adding Reeves after the Panarin incident most teams have 1 or 2 bigger tough 4th liners. Even we added Hayden in the same way, although that was a rather mediocre attempt to follow that trend.

OK, but the story goes that Terry wasn’t some innocent bystander. He made comments on ice and was having too much fun on the bench for his opponent’s liking. The goalie got poked and it was on. It didn’t matter if Del was on the ice or on the bench. That was going to happen.  Irrespective of someone’s fourth line.

    Well you can do both.

The talent is there. There are several prospects coming. Multiple high picks. Should be plenty of talent soon. Too much even in a few years (can't pay everybody if they all develop well). Rochester isn't filled with tough guys who can play in the NHL though. We could add some grit in free agency without stepping away from the building plan and it'll help build the team attitude.

You think Beagle would have acted as tough if it'd been DesLauriers coming at him instead of Terry? A free agent I'd consider by the way.

Jay Beagle is not a tough guy. He hasn’t dropped the gloves since 2013.  He just lost his *****. It happens.

However, to your point, no one will turn down more grit. It’s just harder and harder to find.

Whenever I listen to Okposo talk I come away being impressed with how thoughtful and insightful he is. When asked a question he doesn't give a pablum response to it. He thinks about the question and then clearly responds to it. He doesn't evade or attempt to skirt any issue. He's a high character guy who conducts himself with dignity. I'm just so impressed by him. There are a select few people who by their mere presence are a positive influence on others. He's one of them.

Totally agree. Tim Murray gets killed for his mix in the locker room, but he got this one right.

KO probably made too much money to bother coaching (and his kids are young), but I would love to have him in a developmental/coaching role once his playing days are over.

Why does he have to be in the top 6?  The team is excelling right now rolling 4 lines.  Back in 2005/6 we also excelled at rolling 4 lines that could score.  This season two of our current 4th line players have scored in double digits and KO is closing in on 20.

Stl in their Cup year had 10 forwards and 3 D score in double figures.  Having a "3rd" line winger that can pot 20+ is awesome depth and for a team without a dynamic forward or 2 he is a necessity for the next few years.

Because his salary will price him out.  If you’re making 4M or more, you need to be in the top six. Unless he’s willing to sign for a short term…which I don’t think is in the best interest of a player who doesn’t hit UFA status until age 28.  The Sabres cap flexibility will cease to be a thing in two seasons when Dahlin and Tage need long term deals and Muel/Cozens need bridge deals.

Plus there’s that whole idea of a good goalie who isn’t on an ELC or 750k contract.

    4) What would you do with Olofsson this offseason?  He needs a new contract.

I would give him his QO, and go to arbitration if necessary…and then flip him at the trade deadline as a pending UFA/rental.

Assuming the current top line will continue, it is hard to see a spot for VO in the top six.
Casey, Cozens, Quinn, Peterka, & Krebs are all fine second line options (who are all younger and cheaper).

  12. 19 minutes ago, JohnC said:

In my opinion Olofsson is not a top 6 player. That doesn't bother me at all. If he becomes a very good third line player who can also contribute on the PP, he has a lot of value. There is a number of ways to construct a high yield roster. Having quality lines below the top two lines is an essential requirement to build a serious team. And having a player such as Olofsson contributing on whatever line he is on something to embrace and desire.

While I agree in concept, I don’t think you can pay third line guys 4M or more.

  13. I was listening to NHL Network radio this week and Friedman was stating that the percentage of goals at 5-on-5 is at its second highest rate in modern memory (something like 80% of goals are at even strength).  He said most NHL GM’s prefer the the game to be decided 5-on-5 versus the way the game was called coming out of the lockout.

This should be considered when determining a (mostly) PP specialist (who is currently running on PP2).

If he cannot regularly skate in the top six, I would move on from him at the trade deadline next season.
