A whole lot of complaining after a pretty even period.

The problem with this argument is that every single thing you described can also happen with a junior or European player. So why the animosity towards only one source of players?
I think this is only partially true. College players cannot sign their ELC immediately and then report to college to play (singing a pro contract terminates their amateur status).
However, Junior or International players can sign their ELC and go back to wherever they came from to continue to develop.
If Portillo could have signed after his freshman year of college and gone back to school, maybe he would have. But those aren’t the rules.

He’s Chris Taylor.
If only the AHL had room for Chris Taylor’s instead of auto-responding that anyone is replaceable because of “development opportunities.” And insert a 20 year old fifth round draft pick on an ELC.
The Taylor or Pettis role is mostly gone from the league and I hate it.

Ryan Johnson is a defensively sound puckmoving defenceman with average size and elite feet who projects as a good 4/5.
He would be far more foolish than Erik Portillo to go to free agency.
Sure there's burning off a year of ELC advantage. And there's also plenty of evidence that the Sabres are the type of team that not only gives young players a fair chance, they actually do a good job of developing them. They've treated him well and they play a style that suits his game.
But unlike Portillo — who would be battling with 2 other "goalies of the future", at best would start next season in a 50/50 battle for the crease in Rochester, and could just as easily be in the ECHL — Johnson would have a 50/50 chance of walking right into the #5 spot on the Sabres blueline this spring and may never have to play a period in the AHL.
Think about it. There's a pretty good chance he's as good or better than Bryson and Clague right now.
Maybe he has other "life"priorities, but from a "hockey" perspective, I'm not sure a better situation exists for him in terms of a path to NHL success.
I’m just confused by this whole relationship. The Sabres are clearly on the rise, they can burn a year of the ELC if they want, and Ryan was born into a hockey family that has no reason to defect from the Sabres. And, Buffalo has the option of a compensatory pick in their back pocket. So maybe a college degree is a motivating factor for his decision to remain in school, but I can see a happy marriage forthcoming. Am I missing something?

No. He's technically on the same route as Portillo right now. He just has to wait another year, if he wants, and he can choose to go to the highest bidder as well.
I’m not 100%, but I think the entry level contract and its limitation comes into play. So it isn’t as much of a highest bidder kind of thing.
Either way, I don’t begrudge Portillo for exercising his right to free agency. It isn’t great for Buffalo, but it is what it is.

His First Appearance at the game will get the crowd into a bigger frenzy than it usually is, I would save that for A tougher opponent in Cincinnati
Plus it makes more sense, given the medical event happened during the Cinci game.

That’s a bummer for the Amerks. But I imagine he’s thrilled.

I don't like sending UPL down. He has been an integral part of digging us out of the 8 game skid. The Sabres are one of the hottest teams in the league. It just feels like too much risk for not enough reward.
Well they had to send UPL down on paper because he was an “emergency recall.” But Meatballs said on the radio today that UPL is starting tonight.

I’m not passionate about the idea, but that’s 11th and 12th of twelve forwards last night.
Since thanksgiving (so the last 17 games), JJ has seven points and Quinn has eight points.

Quinn and Peterka with about 9 min of toi last night.
Nine min? Yikes. Do you send down one of these waiver exempt players for space for Comrie?
Say JJP for a week on the farm, then Quinn for a week on the farm.
That buys a couple of weeks to figure out what to do with UPL & react to any injuries.
Krebs or Mitts have each had a good week and slot into their role.

It seemed like a throwaway in the trade. Someone said that Botterill wanted 2 other players from STL before him.
Actually Botts deserves the credit for Tage. Armstrong was asked why Tage was the prospect sent out (instead of Kyrou or Thomas) and he replied that, “Buffalo wanted Thompson.” It was during his press conference.

They may very well fall out of that race for the reasons you stated (the kids slowing down, etc) but that doesn't mean they AREN'T in the race now.
95 sometimes gets you into the playoffs. Right now the 'pace' to make the last spot in the east is 95 also (yes that can change, a few points higher or lower)
Look at the teams above the Sabres or in that last wild card spot and see what they need to get to 95 points by the end of the year:
Islanders: .5975 of remaining points (98 point pace)
Pittsburgh: .5795 (95 point pace)
Buffalo: .5978 (98 point pace)
Florida: .6547 (107.4 point pace)
It's a race. I didn't include Washington, Tampa, Rangers or New Jersey, all of whom are within a handfall of 'points pace' to the Sabres and all currently in spots they can fall out of.
So the Sabres goaltending can cool off a bit, Scoring may drop. The 'young guys' may hit the wall, or a Team like Florida might get it together and go on a 7 or 8 game run to pass the Sabres. Yes, those are all possible. But they didn't happen yet, so as of now the Sabres are right in the middle of a wild card race at the moment.
The Panthers are 18-18-4, so I think their pace referenced above might be off.

That might be true if the money is more important to Vinnie than playing in the NHL. If Vinnie and his agent think someone will pick him up, he may just forgo the money. Admittedly Sheahan thought he'd be better off, but he's now in Switzerland (with 0 pts in 6 games so far).
But that’s what waivers are for. There’s literally no reason for Vinny to terminate his contract.
-
45 minutes ago, GASabresIUFAN said:
I wonder if Vinnie will ask for a release like Sheahan did if management tells them he is going to be waived?
No chance of this.
Sheahan was on a two way contract, meaning he got paid a fraction of his NHL salary to play in ROC.
Vinny is on a one way deal, so he gets paid 1.7M regardless of where he plays.

Yes the Amerks sucked tonight. The Sens opted to play five guys in the box once they went up 3-1 after two periods. It was effective. Rochester also took some silly penalties all night. Onto Friday…
-
We’ve gone from, “Is Tage even an NHL’er to is Tage a league MVP?” in 1.5 seasons. The meteoric rise is incomprehensible. The answer to the Q, yes he is top ten in the league, and yes he is top five in the league. Especially if you consider the future of the player…he’s top five today and shows all signs of being the “guy” going forward. And he’s signed for below market value for seven years beginning next year. Sweet!

If you're going to Craig Rivet and Andrew Peters for your medical advice you deserve whatever fate befalls you.
While I can kind of see where you’re coming from, no one is saying that.
What we are reacting to is this podcast isn’t the time, the place, or the forum for that commentary.

I don’t know if this is helpful to your scenario, but they’re uploaded to Spotify each time. It is how I find their episodes.

Episode 199 features anti-woke warrior Jeremy Roenick who is using Craig and Petey's s####y podcast to promote the online conspiracy that the Damar Hamlin tragedy was brought about by COVID vaccines. That's the last straw for me. People who use tragedy to spread lies are ghouls. JR is one and Craig & Petey ought to be ashamed of themselves.
I’m very disappointed to hear this. If i can glean a host’s (or guest’s) political leanings on a hockey podcast, they’re doing it wrong.
I will boycott JR episodes forever. This isn’t the first time he’s complained politically on the podcast. The words Biden or “wokeness” don’t belong on a Sabres-centric hockey pod and I’ve previously heard both.
If Petey and Rivet didn’t challenge these comments, then it’s pretty irresponsible. It’s just not the forum for that talk. I’m really disappointed to hear this because I’m a regular listener and I would also feel compelled to react the same way as you. What a bummer.

Comrie could have had the fourth one, but now 4-1 baby Sens
-
Hard to blame Comrie on any of the three. He got a poor lateral push off the post for the second goal (in which the cross-ice pass wasn’t defended), but no one was stopping the first goal and only luck would have stopped the third goal.
I hope the offense shows up soon.
Why do the Sabres Stink at Home?
in The Aud Club
Posted · Edited by Porous Five Hole
Per Brian Koziol on WGR postgame show, the top twelve teams in the eastern conference all have winning records at home…except Buffalo.
The Sabres are 9-11-2 at home. Losing 13 out of 22 at home is pretty brutal.
The last change, the smell of Cheerios, and decently engaged fans (while in lower numbers than most buildings) all seem like they would help.
Any idea what gives?
I’m not ready to go back to the concept of a season of development. If that means Goat Heads for all home games (6-1 record), so be it.
