Still from the last minute of the Embedded video. Some of it is too blurred for me to make out, so here’s my Mad Libs version: “A Buffalo Sabre is an athlete that is (something) on and off the ice, driven to grow and (something) in whatever challenges and adversity are presented. Through grit and mental toughness, a Buffalo Sabre will be unselfish, resilient and (something), with the goal of winning a Stanley Cup Championship.”

Vogl has a good screen cap of that:

What I like about Adams thus far as he has said repeatedly or asked repeatedly for tape on guys. He wants to watch the picks we might take at 8. He watched tape on Staal. I am sure other GMs do all of this but I am very encouraged how much that is a focal point.

I'm sure it works pretty much this way in every organization, but it did come across nicely in the video.  Proper delegation and trust in your staff, but not over-delegation.

Simple solution: Assemble a Skinner/Jack/Reinhart line. And play Skinner more on the PP.

    I like this.

    Skinner - Jack - Reinhart

    Olofsson - Staal - XXX

I'd prefer XXX to be an addition, but it could be Cozens or Thompson.

Lundell is a solid pick, but he's like a Toyota Camry. Hoping Rossi falls.

Lundell is a v6 Camry with a tune-up.  Uninspiring at first glance but with a surprising amount of flash under the surface.

Not gonna compete with the Corvettes of this draft on pure ability, but he'll hold his own more than people think.

I still like Rossi more, just wanted to toy with the analogy.

So, whats everyone's top 5 realistic picks for #8.

    For me:

    1 Rossi

    2 Lundell

    3 Perfetti

    4 Raymond

    5 Jarvis

    1. Rossi

    2. Sanderson/Drysdale

    3. Raymond

    4. Lundell

    5. Jarvis

  6. So assuming nobody else falls, all it takes for Rossi to get to us is either:

    - Both defensemen go before us.

    - One defenseman and Holtz/Quinn/Askarov goes before us.

That's starting to look increasingly likely to me.  I'm starting to get excited about this.

I'm sure the PR department likely knows no more about who Adams likes than we do, but it's interesting that they started with Rossi and Quinn after Pronman specifically mentioned both of them.

  8. You can be a hard-working high compete player without being a bruiser.  Whether that constitutes as playing with an edge is up to you.

To me, you don't have to be a hitter but I'd much prefer we take a guy that's always working than one with the tendency to be a perimeter floater.

  9. From what I can read on Merrill, he seems to be a jack of all trades master of none defensive defenseman.  Strong defensive game, not inept offensively but nothing to write home about.  His profile and metrics actually remind me a lot of McCabe.

Seems like a solid bottom four D-man, who could be had for relatively cheap.  Could be a good complement to a more offense minded RD, or a solid partner for Borgen to develop with.  He got a lot of praise for how he worked with Zach Whitecloud as a rookie.

  10. I think trading down a couple spots with the plan to take Jarvis is getting too cute with it.  If he's the guy, just take him at 8.

The more I think about it, the more I can see it playing out where Rossi is on the board and we take Holtz.  And this board will have a meltdown.

I would be very happy to pick up Grelzzy.  He's an exceptional skater and good playmaker with good hockey IQ.  NB though that he's only 5'9", 175 lbs -- so it would seem unlikely that the Sabres would have both him and Bryson in their top 6.  In any case I think dudacek is right that the Bruins aren't going to let him go, since he's good and relatively cheap and they control his rights.

Speaking of Bryson, I feel like I've heard good things about his development this year but I haven't seen him play.  To anyone who has, how is he looking and when would you expect him to seriously compete for a roster spot?

  12. Grzelcyk is a solid player and would round out our LD nicely.  I just don't see why Boston would trade him though unless they're hell-bent on re-signing Krug and would have no space after that.

Assuming Chad has good intel, it's interesting to me that they've inqured about a D-man with arb rights given all the hubbub around not qualifying Montour a while back for fear of arbitration.

  13. Good thoughts @Thorny, that's pretty much how I see it playing out as well.

That middle six two way RW probably falls into more of a want than a need, but that would be such a key addition for this team.  I was more confident that we'd pursue that kind of player until I realized that Tage is waivers eligible this season, so I bet the org has him penciled into that spot.
