  1. We need another middle six center.  The question is if we'd rather have Johnson than the other available options.

If we're feeling confident in out ability to get a different 2/3C, whether it be from free agency or trade, don't put in a claim. But we better actually land that other guy.

If we aren't close to acquiring anyone else, claim him.

Part of me does kinda want him to fall through unclaimed just to screw Tampa over, but that's not how we should be making our decision.

Sabres should be on the phone with Krug, Vatenen, and especially Erik Gustafsson.  Gustafsson would be a great fit.  All top-4 left-shot Ds.  All point producers.

I'm assuming Gustafsson and Vatanen would be looking at pretty similar deals to Brodie.  Is that around where you see them?

So Kahun would accept a 2x2.5M offer from the Sabres...

    People think that's a steal...

He's not signed with any other team yet.

So, either no other teams think he's worth 2.5M (or close enough to it) or those numbers are not right.

    I know which I believe.

Yep, another baseless Twitter rumor that doesn't make a whole lot of sense when you think about it.

Anything happening today so far to convince anyone here that KA has a plan?

It's not even 5 on the first day of free agency, and most of our realistic targets are still out there.

Way too early to be asking ourselves this question.

Dreger saying on the INstigators just now that they are a long shot, but they Sabres are one of about 10 teams expected to reach out to Taylor Hall.

Alright Dregs, now that you've riled up everyone in Buffalo let's hear some names that are actually realistic.

  6. I've got no issue with bringing back Zemgus, and good for him for getting a healthy raise.

But this contract is overkill.  He's a guy you sign for one year at a time at $1.5-1.75 and hope to replace with an equally useful player on an ELC in the future.  This is more AAV and more term than I think he is worth in his role, especially considering that he's the exact type of player that is likely to get squeezed by the flat cap and team internal budget.

It is especially strange when we seemingly didn't qualify Kahun over fear of being stuck overpaying him by a million dollars or so.  Although I'm reserving judgement there for now.

A couple of more draft thoughts.

    1) KA got a good price to move up from 38 to 34.  It should have cost a mid 3rd rd pick, but it only cost a mid 4th.

    2) We should have traded down from 8th to 10th if such an offer was made as I suggested before the draft.  We would have received a mid to low 2nd rd pick to move down two slots.  If Quinn was the guy, odds say Rossi and Perfetti would have gone 8 & 9 and we'd still have drafted Quinn.  If Quinn went anyway getting Rossi or Perfetti would have been just as good (if not better) and we'd have had an extra 2nd to enhance our prospect pool.  Guys like Tristen Robins and Jan Mysak might have fallen in our laps.

So we got Quinn and JJP, but we could have had Quinn/Perfetti, JJP and Robins.

But if Quinn is the guy that they felt very strongly about, why risk he not be there at 10?

  8. I find it a little bit funny that rumors have us choosing between 5'9 Rossi and 6'3 Sanderson.

I really like them both, but thought that was interesting.
