Probably because that is even 1 less adequate/good goalie in the league, thus presumably making it a bit more difficult to obtain a good one.

Eh, I don't think it hurts us.  Takes a good goalie out of our division, and the Devils aren't in a win now situation to really be active in the goalie market.  They'd sign a cheap vet before paying out for a goalie.

And I'm pretty confident we don't make a move for a goalie anyway.

I'd rather the league just give teams who can't ice a team the "L" in the schedule and move on.

With the jammed schedule already any changes in schedule are going to have significant ramifications and it will only get worse if the game that was moved suddenly needs to be moved again because the other team had infections.

It's a tough way to operate, but these are tough times.

I had the same thought.  But I'd imagine their TV partners would be throwing fits over forfeited games.  Lost revenues would make that a last, last resort.

Looks like the divorce of Jack and Sam is a done deal.

Tage with Jack? Hmmm...seems like Tage carries the puck a lot, not sure if that will work with Jack and Hall, bit who knows?

    Ya, RK doesn't like Skinner?

Tage can have a tendency to try to do too much with the puck.  I've seen other younger players like that really simplify their game and excel when playing with clearly better player.  I think there's a lot of potential if Tage could do the same.

it’s near the end somewhere.  I listen to this podcast all the time. It’s a very informative but skewed towards the Toronto market a bit.

They talk about that at the 28 minute mark for those curious.  They mention names but don't go into detail on why they don't have Cozens in that 'most NHL ready' group.  I enjoy hearing Burke's opinions on their show, so I'm curious what his reasons are there.

I think there's little harm in starting Cozens out in a limited role in the NHL akin to Dach as people have mentioned.  And I think he should be ready for that.  But there's always the chance that he struggles and looks in over his head.  There's just no way to know until we try it.

Why sign Eakin over Larsson if your goal wasn't to build a reasonable 3rd scoring line?  He is not the defensive player Larsson is but he is a much better offensive player (a 40 pt player annually before last season) while being decent defensively.  Creating a shutdown with Eakin centering Z (before the injury) and KO over Larsson honestly makes no sense.  Z and KO won't help Eakin recover his offense (KO's production in his 4 years in Buffalo is decreasing annually from .69 pts/gp down to .36 pts/gp last year) and since Eakin isn't as good defensively as Larsson it also compromises their shutdown effectiveness.

Considering most of our near ready prospects, like Mitts, Thompson, Cozens, and Routsalainen, are skilled forwards, I assumed (maybe incorrectly) KA signed a smart two way vet center like Eakin to shepherd a couple of these kids and create a 3rd scoring line.

Now having Eakin center ham handed Rieder with the diminishing KO makes even less sense.

    Having a bottom six of

    Rieder Eakin KO

    Sheahan Lazar Thompson

is garbage but this is where we seem to be heading

On the other hand we could do the following

    Hall Eichel Reinhart

    Skinner Staal Thompson

    Olofsson Eakin Cozens

    Rieder Lazar KO

I typed up a very similar post before reading this.  My best guess with Eakin is that they like the flexibility he provides them.  If you get an injury in the top six, Eakin would be a more suitable fill in offensively than Larsson.  Or if someone like Asplund plays himself into the defensive line center role, Eakin could easily be pushed to that younger sheltered offensive line.

  6. The thing that I haven't been able to understand here is Eakin.  By all indications, Krueger intends to use him in the same role as Larsson last year.  Prototypical fourth line, probably third line by minutes played.

If that was the plan all along, why spend more money on Eakin when Larsson did a stellar job in that same role?  It would make sense if Larsson just wasn't interested in returning, but his brother said that wasn't the case.

I'm sure there is a thought process behind it, I'm just curious what it is.

I would, and I'd want a right handed RW'er to come in through another move to offset Reinharts loss. I do believe Buffalo has the assets to acquire PLD without Cozens involved. How that would shake out is interesting. We have some good young guys in the pipeline now, Pekar, Cozens, Peterka? and a couple of D men that may work out, but outside of Cozens, some of these guys will post expansion draft ready. I'd like to see Eichel get some longer term help than Staal and Hall is all.

Off the top of my head:

    Reinhart+ for PLD

    Miller+ for Roslovic

That's an EA Sports trade tree that has no likelihood of happening, but it's fun to think about.

(Cross-quoting from the Around the NHL thread.)

PLD would be a fantastic addition.  Going forward with Eichel and him as the top 2 centers would be amazing.

I don't doubt that they'd ask for Cozens.  Logically the Sabres should give him up for PLD, but I'm not sure I can get there emotionally.

I'd give them Reino, Mittlestadt and either Quinn or next year's #1 in a heartbeat for him though.

I'd imagine the price for PLD would be Cozens and then some.  He looked phenomenal for Columbus in the playoffs last year.

Even if we could make the cap work, I don't think we'd like the price for him.

You get one season’’s worth of LTIR relief. After that it’s back on the cap.

Then what do you do with a player who is signed for multiple years with a career ending injury?

I don't like the idea of teams filing to terminate the contracts of injured players, and the NHLPA would surely have a fit at that idea.

According to what’s been reported, the goalie on the taxi squad would still have to clear waivers though.

That said, the Arizona goalie thing was always more about money and acquiring futures for them than it was about waiver concerns.

I think this just increases the chances of Hutton and futures being the price we pay.

Seems like the requirement will be 3 goalies combined between the roster and taxi squad.  So in Arizona's case, there's really no reason to risk waivers on Hill, you'd just keep him on the active roster.

Agreed that money is still probably their driving force, that and recouping draft picks.  But it sure would have been nice to have a waivers problem putting a timer on them as well.

I think the Arizona goalie dream starts to fizzle with this requirement.  This takes away any pressure the Yotes had to move a goalie, keeping all three on the active roster costs them nothing extra and is no worse than having one on the taxi squad.

They probably would still like to move Raanta for financial reasons, but they'll be happy to wait as long as it takes to get a decent return.

Something else I found interesting from the TSN article:

I'm interpreting this to mean that the owners got a major economic concession from the players -- i.e. effectively a 20% across-the-board pay cut to get the split for the 2019-20 season back to 50/50.

It's not clear from the TSN article, but I would guess that the 72% is before escrow -- i.e. that 20% of the 72% will go into escrow to preserve the 50/50 split for 2020-21.

Even after that cut, the revenue split for this season won't be close to 50/50 from what I've heard.  The players collectively will owe the owners a substantial amount of money that people seem concerned may carry through the rest of the CBA.

I'm curious if the CHL transfer agreement still applies to the taxi squad.  It is effectively being treated as an extension of the AHL roster, so would guys like Quinn be barred from joining the taxi squad?  Not that I think that's  good idea for Quinn, but I'm curious what the ruling there is.

  13. To be fair, there shouldn't be anything wrong with openly speculating on trade ideas in a thread titled "trade rumors and speculation".  I'd imagine many of us spend time here in the off-season because we enjoy talking about moves the team could make or players we'd like them to target.

I don't have an issue with people posting rumors from less than credible sources, it can generate interesting discussion even if the rumor is bogus.  But I do think it would be beneficial to give a bit of a disclaimer if you're going to do that, just to separate the 'real' from the fake.
