Ok. Thursday morning. Sun came up (or, I assume it will). Beat Pittsburgh Friday and we have 20points in 20 games. Improve a bit and get 22-23 points in games 21-40. Get Thompson and Quinn back, sort out the goaltending and get 24-25 points in games 41-60. Make a meaningful deadline trade (dare to dream) and get 26-27 points in games 61-80. Go into the final 2 games with 93-95 points and grab a wildcard.

The negative is we are not where we want to be. The positive is that we just had a decent road trip after a bad two games against Pit/Bos. In the light of day there are positives to build on.

They are going to get their teeth kicked in on Friday. The only suspense is whether Crosby or Malkin end up with hat tricks.

  2. The way that almost everyone has nosedived and regressed this season is such a damning indictment of the entire coaching staff. A serious organization would recognize this and take appropriate action (ie: Start handing out pink slips and hiring competent pros who are actually good at their jobs). The worst organization in modern hockey history (us) will simply do nothing, continue to fail forever and wonder why they keep failing.

That is really really really bad.  If Appert is ignoring the organization’s request for better team D, than he should be fired.   If KA and DG aren’t delivering and reaffirming the message, then it is just another nail in both of their coffins.

It's like the organization wants to do nothing but produce VO style one dimensional forwards who are useless in the NHL.

  4. This team not only stinks to high heaven but they are one of the most boring and awful to watch on top of it. This is one of the worst regressions you will ever see by a team from one season and every sensible person can see the guy(s) behind the bench have failed spectacularly and need to be replaced or the playoffs will remain a fantasy.

Not all entry level coaches are created equal. I see a far more stable coaching and system (Bruins) from a Leach than Granato - who sort of bounced around everywhere.

I am not opposed to a retread. Gallant is interesting. He has potential. And does he want to go to Buffalo?

But who else is successful and sitting there (and also employable - which leaves out Quenneville and Babcock)?

They beat Boston in OT. They beat Carolina, Pittsburgh and Vegas.

I'm not trying to suggest the Ducks are actually any good. They're not. But they were expected to be bad and in full rebuild. We were expected to push for a playoff spot. So scoffing at the Ducks when your own team is floundering is just plain dumb.

Seeing people constantly saying the same thing year after year after year and ending up looking like fools every single time and never learning their lesson is both sad and hilarious.

I agree. This has been my thought expressed in other threads. I mentioned the assistant in Seattle (Leach) who coached in the Bruins system for 4 years (HC of their AHL team). Need a coach from a winning franchise that has a sound system. He needs to get these players tougher mentally and physically.

(Bit of an aside but I just don’t think the organization has been on top of developing their talent. Physically - all these guys need to get bigger and stronger. Mentally - they need a hardened, tougher mentality. And they need a sound system (doesn’t have to be some hyper rigid defense - but just proven that allows their hockey talent to flourish as a team).

The last thing we need is ANOTHER entry level hire. There are multiple guys available with a long track record of success, hire one of them.

  8. There are zero signs right now this team is doing anything but crashing and burning to the bottom of the standings. They have been insanely lucky just to be slightly below .500 as all the numbers and metrics say we are a bottom 5 team in the league right now. The correction is coming (and is likely already under way) leading to a death spiral and the season being over before the new year. I would love to lie to myself and say this won't happen but unfortunately in reality every single sign points to this outcome.
