Make it easy on themselves, win tomorrow in Beantown and then go 3-1-0 the rest of this 5 game segment and they're right where they need to be.

Tonight, Byram played great, Timmons played great overall, Doan was still very good, and the 4th line was completely bought in to doing its job.  Quinn was going to the areas he needs to and was generating chances because of that.

Lyon didn't steal as many as he had been doing, though he did steal several early and at least twice in the 3rd BJ's had thought they'd scored but hadn't.

Benson couldn't connect on a pass to save his life through much of the game but at least he was still working hard and winning battles.  Dahlin had perhaps his worst game under the current and past head coach.  Couldn't make a pass, lost battles, got out of position.  Thompson was bad.  Tuch couldn't make a pass.  Zucker insisted on passing when he should've shot and shooting when he should've passed.  And even with all that going on, and Power having a couple of major gaffes ruining an overall good effort, and with the refs only calling 1 penalty that wasn't associated with a fight/scrum and of all the things they let go deciding THAT was a penalty (and don't know 39's name, but the Sabres get him a LOT and he's awful), they still managed to get a point and really should've had 2 in regulation.  They couldn't have had that many key players being off their game and still get points in a long time.  Hopefully they ALL show up on Thursday.

Speaking of the refs, 39's partner watched Timmons and a BJ beat the crap out of each other in front of the Sabres net for about 10 seconds and then working their way out of the zone including some REALLY viscious cross checks and slashes and called nothing.  Very shortly after that, Tuch and the BJ are shouldering for position, the BJ loses an edge and an arm goes up.  Initially thought it was a linesman calling it an icing because neither Tuch nor the BJ had clear positioning over the other when close to the dot.  Had to do a double take to realize it was 39 blowing another call.

It's mindblowing just how bad NHL officials are at their jobs and that they just keep getting worse. I wonder if over the top abuse at youth level from nutty parents is driving would-be young officials out of the sport, thus shrinking the potential talent pool and leading to quality deterioration?

Yeah, but this childish black and white attitude leaves no room for nuance. That’s all I’m saying I’m not saying that 14 years of frustration isn’t behind all of this.

They just pissed away points in back to back games where doing so was simply inexcusable. Blowing those games late was bad enough, going full Yakety Sax in the OT made it even worse.

  3. I can't believe nobody has caught on to the fact they were likely cynically lowballing Tuch trying to take advantage of the fact he's a local guy who would like to stay, he saw right through it, was insulted, and this was his response.

I agree.  I know the cap is going up, but as much as in an earlier post I said how good he is, he's on of the top wingers in the league...I have no interest in paying him anywhere close to $11m per year when he is going to be in his 30's to START the extension.

Maybe, MAYBE if it was a 4 year extension, but even then...steep price for what I he is likely to be in a couple years.

I'll put it to you like this: The Sabres could offer another team Dahlin, Tage and their unprotected first for a comparable vet from another team and the trade doesn't happen because the guy uses his NTC to block it. Tuch would basically be impossible to replace.

Sportsnet crew not impressed with Lindy throwing team under the bus after just two games. Said 6 regulars missing. Be careful with the messaging this early. Obviously nobody is happy starting 0-3.

Did they happen to watch the first periods of both those games where the players mailed it in as hard as you could possibly do so? Lindy is part of the problem but he had every right to be pissed at that non effort.

Ya, he does, fully agree, but he won't.

Ruff will be fired (possibly kept in an advisory role) by Christmas. Appert will be named interim head coach. Sabres will play loose and open and do a little better and interim tag will be removed in the off season just like it was with Granato.

Adams will be fired or possibly elevated into a different role and Jarmo will be given the GM job. Everyone will remain where they are, chairs are shuffled, no extra pay outs and the impression of a new era. Terry will still sit in on meetings and meddle and maybe even more as he decides to "fully commit to the Sabres" or some other spin. That's my prediction. Not what I'd do, but that's my prediction in what Terry will do.

Appert makes Granato look like Al Arbor in comparison. He is so awful that there is zero chance of any dead cat bounce when he gets the job.

Also, as the pool of top UFA's shrink (supply) so does the teams with the will, or money to sign them (Demand).

If Connor chose not to sign in Winnipeg, sure there would be more supply with him on the market, but the also would be more demand (Winnipeg now looking elsehwere to fill that hole.)

Every free agent signed, even with their own team, impacts both supply and demand at the same time in a salary cap league.

Winnipeg paid him because they knew if they didn't they were losing him in a bidding war on July 1st. The cap paradigm is completely changing.

  8. People really don't seem to understand how markets work or the concept of supply and demand:

Pool of top UFA's hitting market shrinks

    =

    Cost for Tuch goes up.

If Kyle Connor signs for the alleged 12mil x 8 years that's going around, that puts a hard cap impo on what Tuch could ask. But we shall see. At this rate, 10 x 6yrs would be exceptional and 10x 7yrs livable.

It does absolutely no such thing.

I hope the team does not rush into signing him to a large contract.  As others have correctly said, he will be here this year with or without an extension.

Also, the charts and stats are out there regarding players, especially forwards, aging and their production. Unless you are an elite player, and even when you are, your production curve and overall 2-way play plateaus and peaks between the ages of 23-28.  After that in almost all cases you are in decline.  In your late 20's that decline may or may not be all that evident but after age 30, it does become evident in most cases.

Unless a player is elite, someone like McDavid, Pastrnak, McKinnon, Crosby, or Ovechkin, I do not want them on my team with any more than 2 years remaining on their contract at age 32 or later, unless it is a very team-friendly deal.  If a team is in the middle of cup runs like Florida, it may make more sense, however they are still likely to pay for it a couple years down the road. Buffalo is not currently looking like they are contending for the Cup.

I respect those who post that they want an extension done for Tuch, and I know many fans have an emotional connection to him.  I just personally would rather have the Sabres let things take their time if they are not getting a deal that fits the team short and medium term.

Playing hardball when virtually no players with options want to come here and you have as bad a rep as an organization as any in the history of pro sports is certainly a choice.

Totally different situation from Tuch. Reinhardt got a short extension from Botterill. By the time Adams took over, nothing was keeping Sam here.

Since Zach Bogosian, you'd have to go back to Golisano getting cheap on Drury and Briere. My point is there really isn't a history of the Sabres lowballing players and letting them get away. So acting like that is the likely outcome with Tuch is like you're rooting for that to happen.

All negotiations start apart. That's why you negotiate. You have a half dozen other players in the league right now slow walking their deals because they want to cash in on the expected higher future caps.

FTR Botterill wanted to give him a long term deal, Terry is the one who balked at doing so. That's a major reason Botts got another chance in Seattle: People in hockey know he was sandbagged by the imbecile of an owner and don't hold it against him.

You'll have to explain how this statement affects things. Adams brought in this 5 years down the road thinking more than anyone and he should have been fired but he wasn't so we are where we are. We can't not  behave like a proper organization because of it though. Tuch is valuable, but he's not THAT valuable.

If he gets to UFA that statement is going to age like a tuna fish sandwich left out in the sun for two weeks. Multiple team will give him offers in that ballpark, he and his agent know this.

I think that's pretty extreme. The cap is going up but so will ALL the salaries. 10 million is still a lot for him.

Peterka signed with Utah for 7.7 . He's younger, he had 68 pts. Tuch had 67. Now you can argue that Tuch brings leadership and other factors but to get from 8 to 10 is a lot. If it's 8 years that makes him 37 at the end of it.

Since they are still negotiating I'm assuming there is no hometown discount in play.

The right number for Tuch is 8x8. That overpays him in the last 3-4 years but it's fair since he's valuable now.

The because it's the Sabres overpay number is 9x8. So this is the number where you say win for the Sabres win for Tuch.

10x8 or anything higher will help close the Sabres window before it's barely open a crack. Bad idea.

We are in this situation as the biggest disaster of an organization in league history largely because of "Five Years Down The Road" thinking. Ignoring the present directly leads to not having a future.
