That's awesome but it also avoids my hypothetical question

I feel that even if we make great strides this year and just miss that this could work itself out next year. We missed out on some deals I would have been ok with. Now the cost will be a factor for anyone who will make that difference. If a deal comes along that would make that difference then I expect KA to jump on it.

If he decides to pay a high price, so be it and I'll accept it based on my confidence in him.

Just for interest....can anyone who follows the other leagues tell me if there are any goalies we might be able to bring over to fill the spot? Older vet or other that maybe no one is thinking about?

    So we just protect it.

Hypothetical, if we traded a first for Kuemper and made the playoffs, would anyone care? Would the trade be worth it, then? If the answer is yes, my opinion is the moves we've already made mandate taking that risk.

It's a draft pick. Let's make the playoffs.

And yet some argue about how bad our prospect pool is.

I'd like to make the playoffs too but as someone pointed out recent trades (some of which I wish we were in on) I don't think it's necessary to pay that much.

It's not the first time I've over-valued our resources.  Call me Darcy!

Raantta is a capable goalie, but in the mind of Arizona, its a desperately needed cap dump.  What is good play from a back up going to bring the Yotes next season?   They are in serious regression mode.    Who else has both cap space and desire to take on a # 2 goalie at over $4M?  And more importantly, what is the going price for a #2?  J. Allen got a third.  Matt Murray is a #1 and yielded a second (albeit a very high second).

Recent trades for a top 4 Defenseman (A. Martinez) have brought back 2 second round picks.  Scandella brought a second and a fourth to Montreal.   How can Montour not bring at least that?

    J. Allen cost a 3rd and a 7th, just for info sake. Not that it matters much.

Name a goalie that you believe is available that will elevate this team and is worth a first round pick? I would certainly give up a first round pick for Tampa's starter and Dallas's Ben Bishop but those upper tier goalies are not on the market. I agree with the highlighted segment in your last sentence. So there is something we agree on.

You are assuming that I am the one who brought up using a 1st rd pick AND that I agree to giving up a 1st for a goalie. Let me assure you that I don't and I was just adding to the convo.

My stand is that IF Adams ( I promise you I am not him) were to trade a 1st + for a goalie, it better be a very good one.

At the right price I think most players are available, whether to pay that price is the question.

So, I think we agree on more than you think.

There is an assumption on your part that one of the goalies available will be the difference/reason that gets you into the playoffs. If you scan the market now name the goalie who you believe is of the caliber that will make such a difference? Again, make no mistake what I am saying here. I'm not against upgrading the position, and that position is more likely to be for the backup. I'm just not willing to pay the extravagant price of giving up a Risto and/or a first round for that type of addition.

I'm also assuming  that if we're trading a 1st for a goalie that we're not talking about the scrap leftover UFA's. So, I assume if we're trading a 1st rd pick for a goalie then yes, I expect that player to push us into the playoffs, especially with our other additions.

A compressed schedule this year will demand that type player. Do you think Carey Price will play 60 games in a compressed schedule? The need for 2 quality goalies will be evident.

As far as who is available...for a 1st rd pick and maybe a sweetener, many could be available and if not then don't make a trade.

I wouldn't give up a first round pick for any goalie in a trade. We used a first round pick for Cozens. The hope is that in his second year he will make the roster and in the not too distant future will be our 2C. With our first pick in this year's draft we selected Quinn who was arguably one of the best goal scorers/shooters in the draft. In two or three years the hope is that he will be a forward on one of our top two lines. The point is these first round picks are valuable assets that shouldn't be dealt for at best a second tier/pedestrian goalie.

Hutton was a decent backup when he was first acquired. He noticeably slipped last season. Were his eye issues the main factor in that slippage? I'm not sure. If it was then if a replacement couldn't be found for a less costly price than you are advocating for, I would prefer to keep him. Marty Biron has repeatedly made the point that if Hutton is not overloaded with games he is effective. It's when he gets overused that he predictably fades.

Make no mistake what I'm saying here. I'm not saying don't trade for an upgrade in goal if the price is right. But I would rather keep a player such as Risto or Montour and our first round pick then overpay for a second tier goaltender.

You also have to consider if the goalie you're trading for potentially gets you to the playoffs. The value of that 1st rd pick is not Cozens nor Quinn, and not only in the players value but also the future of the team. Sometimes you're even looking at 2nd line players moving into the first round depending on how far you go in the playoffs.

I'm still on my hockey fan ELC, so I don't have a lot of sabres experience. I have enjoyed watching Jack and Dahlin so I guess one of them.

Hope things get better for you before you get to UFA. Lucky for you that you haven't had to endure much of the drought. When the winning begins you will be sucked in like most of us and you won't be able to get enough.

Truth be told, the Braves were treated as a 3rd class citizen behind the Sabres and Canisus basketball back then.  However, they has a chance to be great.  They had Randy Smith, McAdoo, Kaufmann and then drafted Adrian Dantley and had Moses Malone (for 2 games until they traded him).  Can you imagine a starting 5 of Dantley, McAdoo, Malone, Kaufmann and Randy Smith.  Wow!  Thanks Snyder and John W Brown.  I've hated the NBA ever since.

shut yer mouth. Leafs can never win a cup. NEVER!

I think a better answer to my post would've been....

"Bogo played for TB last, so now if TO were to win the cup, he would be an ex-Tampa player and they take the heat for it".

Agree that TO should NEVER win the cup.

Completely my opinion based upon what I would think is accepted understanding of human beings.

and note I asked what he was thinking, not that he was outwardly unhappy. I refuse to believe that he signed that contract after spending a year with Jack Eichel and not thinking about playing along his side for at least several years. It’s a ridiculous notion to think that wasn’t a major factor in his decision.

and if it was a major factor in his decision, it ended before it started and if I was him I would be utterly disappointed in how it played out.

that doesn’t mean it isn’t best for the team, it’s just that if I’m Jeff Skinner I have probably kicked a few things since signing that contract.

Fair enough.  But maybe we all should see how the lines shake out. Who knows for sure Skinner doesn't  end up with Jack.

It seems most people's opinions are based upon what they think Jeff Skinner should feel from the perspective of everyone not named Jeff Skinner.

I think Jeff Skinner is horribly disappointed in how the situation played out for himself and his career, regardless of how he may feel about the direction of the team.

I think we all (Skinner too) should look at it  as a positive. Skins seems to be a team guy who is harder on himself and wants the team to succeed. With knowing Staal and Hall, I think he'll be just fine.

Winning will solve alot. I also see the possibilities in the flexibility of this line-up to be helpful in many ways in obtaining their goals.

Is there some factual evidence that leads you to believe Skinner is unhappy or is it just your opinion?

Don't forget Simmonds. They've got 3 Sabres cast offs now.

It's hilarious to me that the leafs say they are now "harder to play against" with the addition of 3 ex-Sabres from a team that was considered by most as the very opposite of hard to play against.

Perhaps the pendulum has swung and they are on the way down and we are finally on the way up.

Or perhaps BOGO wins 2 consecutive cups.
