  1. He hit and miss on the Hall thing. But there was no long term damage to that at all, which can’t be said for other teams looking to add a vet like that.

Any GM has a chance to make a good roster trading away Reinhart and Eichel at the start of their prime.  I think he did okay on those deals. His Ristolainen deal was a cherry on top.

I like his drafting strategy of hockey iq and attitude being the top priority, physical metrics coming second. Again time will tell.

He turned Buffalo from the butt end of every joke in the league into an attractive destination players around the league see as an emerging threat.  A lot to praise here.  Even if Bylsma got some more points out of the team, nobody was scared of them once they matched up on Eichel.

I think coaching is the biggest problem, assistants in particular. There has been some turnover, so still time to see how it shakes out. I can’t stand the goalie coach situation and he’s in denial there is a problem there. I hope Levi is good enough to not be phased by it. If Levi doesn’t work we have major issues.  Toronto has been trying to get the goalie position right for over a decade now, it’s not like we’re the only team needing help there. I agree with him letting Ullmark pass because he wouldn’t lock him up to long term, Boston fans have already turned on him.

Playoffs or bust this season tho.

Buffalo is never going to match the defensive style of play that Boston plays. Each team has a different philosophy, and its rosters are built around their respective philosophy. Buffalo is a more offensive and faster paced team. In order for Buffalo to make the leap forward it doesn't need to replicate Boston's style of play; it simply has to alter its style a little more to play a more balanced two-way game. What we need to do to be more successful is replicate how it played at the end of the last season. And the two additional blueliners added to the roster should help to do that.

Or you just need players who fit the play style better.  You can’t round peg every square hole

I did not like the trade of Bloom for Stillman because I thought then and still think that Stillman was and is a lousy NHL defenseman.  KA must have re-thought him as well because he is now down to 8th or possibly 9th on the depth chart depending on how management views Clague who they just re-signed.  I thought acquiring Stillman was a waste of an asset and still do.  Granted we need another depth-type forward prospect like a hole in the head and Bloom won't be missed (unless he becomes Brandon Hagel 2.0).

Now back on topic; Goaltending or lack thereof.  When I made the list, it's pretty clear to me that Briere will move Hart at some point this summer or this coming season.  Why acquire Petersen when you have Sandstrom and Ersson behind Hart, unless you plan to move Hart to make room for Ersson to play with the more veteran Petersen.  Hart is kind of the ideal candidate for me.  He is young, but has years of experience already.  His numbers are good and he'd benefit from a change of scenery and a competitive team.  Buffalo also gets a goalie with 2 years of control.  That should be a bridge long enough for Levi to earn the No. 1 job instead of getting it handed to him now because there is no viable alternative.

I also think it's worth monitoring how Askarov (NSH) and Wolf (CLG) do in camp.  Do they force their way onto the NHL rosters, allowing Nash to trade Saros and Clg to trade Markstrom (he has an NMC) or Vlader?

Let me qualify my next statement by saying I disliked the trade of a non NHLer for an NHLer that helped the team. I now have goalie opinions about acquiring any goaltender that breathes

Is there anyone who is “that good”?

Any time anyone proposes a goalie, somebody responds with a version of this.

Not pointing fingers at you, it’s something we all seem to be guilty of. Goaltending really does seem to be in the eye of the beholder.

My reading of this board is that the only goalie we’d all be happy with Saros, and even then only if we didn’t pay too much.

Some of us don’t believe goalies are worth the contract or the ones that are don’t become available.

Boston is already trying to get rid of Ullmark for example

Granato learned how to take timeouts and how to pull his goalie as the season wore on.

I'm not sure you could ever quantify getting points in the standing back by swapping your goalie earlier. Usually you get shelled for 3 before you even consider a goalie change. Even with the Sabres potent offense, you're not going to win every game in which you give up 3 or 4 goals.

Granato had multiple games he kept them in for 5. Offense turned around but 5 is a… safe lead. He’s doing all the same failings as McDermott. All culture no smarts.

Most of you seem to think Olofsson is just being sold off to the highest bidder for futures.

I don’t think that’s the case at all.

I think he is a chip being floated as part of a package aimed at acquiring a roster upgrade.

I think any chance he was being shipped off for a pick vanished along with Quinn’s Achilles.

Who is trading a roster upgrade for an overpaid PP specialist?

Downplaying or dismissing Granato‘s role in the acquisition of several players so far since he has taken over as coach, is ignorant in my opinion. Not to mention other players that aren’t even on the Sabres anymore praising what Adams and Granato are building towards. It’s a nice change. It’s nice to see.

That’s great. The penalty kill is atrocious and he lost many points not pulling goalies earlier enough when it was painfully obvious

@SwampD, you will be happy to know that as of today, the Sabres are about $16 million over the cap floor and are no longer paying anyone to not play for them, not even Cody Hodgson.

Terry Pegula will be spending about $85 million in actual dollars on players salaries in the coming year.

The scouting staff is still below it’s pre-purge level (it went from 21 to 7 and is now at 13) but the coaching, player development and analytics staff are all well above where they were in the Botterill era.

Anyone who thought the Sabres COVID era cutbacks were permanent was wrong.

We’re two players over the roster limit. A couple guys are going to get free rides

You state this as fact, but let's look at it subjectively:

Last season, with 70+ games of the 3 headed hydra goalie situation, they still missed the playoffs by just 1 game. They were a very young team still finding their way.

Fast forward to October. All of that young talent is a year older with a full year under their belt playing together. They have improved their blue line with Clifton and brought in another veteran who has recent Stanley Cup experience. They're looking at a full season of Devon Levi who in his 7 game sample size looked much better than either Comrie/UPL, or Anderson most nights. And it wasn't just against powderpuffs, he beat some very good teams.

I'm not saying I don't want KA to add a 1B, I absolutely do; but failing to do so doesn't torpedo our playoff aspirations at all, IMO. Unless Levi struggles badly, I think we get in with him as the rest of the roster continues to build on last season's work.

But, all that said, I'd be way more comfortable with a solid veteran 1B as the above doesn't take into account injuries.

Levi didn’t play until the last handful of games, which if we didn’t lose half our top6 to injuries would’ve likely been all wins.

Personally think that signing Tokarski indicates they will only have 2 goalies on the big team.  Whether that is through running Levi & one of the other 2 already there with them trying to sneak the other into Ra-cha-cha, or making a trade for a vet and moving one or both of the other 2 isn't clear yet.

But Tokarski IMHO is the insurance policy that they have a guy they trust could play a game or 2 in a pinch should the guy that ends up 3 when the dust has settled gets claimed when put on waivers.

He has played adequately in small samples for Buffalo.  They've seen him 1st hand in Buffalo.  Subban too.  And IMHO they don't trust Subban as much to be the emergency guy.  (As evidenced by signing Tokarski and not Subban.)

Fully expect them to either trade UPL or waive Comrie and expect him to get claimed

Toker can absolutely play a game or three
