  1. So easily yes. Though my offer sheet contract would certainly go longer than 4 years?

I mean if we made Edmonton's exact picks, those were high, and we'd have what, Nuge, Hall, Nurse, Yakupov? And with Matthews the picks are likely in the teens and twenties. I'd trade that batch of players for Matthews in a second.

Moreover, only 1 team in the league needs to decide it's worth it.

And it doesn't even need to be a decision made from a hockey perspective. From a business perspective, a team that wants to reinvigorate the fan base could do it as a publicity stunt. People would pay to come see Eichel play. He's that kind of player.

  2. I don't care if he's waived; I just don't really want him in the top 12.  If they have to keep him on the roster, fine.  It's fine to have him available to cover injuries or to give a guy a rest.

I'm actually curious what would happen to his contract if waived and 1. clearing & sent down to Roch, or 2. claimed by another team.

I don't think making him a healthy scratch every night is the right thing to do

  3. "Nasrudin was caught in the act and sentenced to die. Hauled up before the king, he was asked by the Royal Presence: "Is there any reason at all why I shouldn't have your head off right now?" To which he replied: "Oh, King, live forever! Know that I, the mullah Nasrudin, am the greatest teacher in your kingdom, and it would surely be a waste to kill such a great teacher. So skilled am I that I could even teach your favorite horse to sing, given a year to work on it." The king was amused, and said: "Very well then, you move into the stable immediately, and if the horse isn't singing a year from now, we'll think of something interesting to do with you."

As he was returning to his cell to pick up his spare rags, his cellmate remonstrated with him: "Now that was really stupid. You know you can't teach that horse to sing, no matter how long you try." Nasrudin's response: "Not at all. I have a year now that I didn't have before. And a lot of things can happen in a year. The king might die. The horse might die. I might die.

"And, who knows? Maybe the horse will sing.""

The horse singing = Eichel saying "gee, gosh-golly, I just want to be a Sabre and will do it for 8x8"

A year going by, the status quo holding up, the horse not singing = offer sheet

    :P

I always like a good parable, but in the story above, I'm left feeling like Eichel signing an 8-year deal is analogous to the horse singing.

    you beat me to it

  4. The offer sheet cannot happen until July 1 2018

    So no asap needed

That's all true. ASAP would make us all (probably including Jack) feel a little better, though. Especially if the outcome will be the same, whether it's asap or June '18.

And this is now probably over-analyzing: maybe, in the back of his mind, GMBot could think that going into the year without a contract could inspire the young Jack to play even a little bit harder?

  5. It feels like his camp and the Sabres are probably in agreement on what his value is right now, but that both sides also think he might be able to earn himself even more with a lights-out campaign this year.

That's a very rainbows and unicorns way of putting it. The Sabres want him to sign for the least amount possible -- and right now -- and he wants to sign for what he believes he is: a generational talent that can take a team to the cup.

  6. Why do we choose to ignore what Eichel himself is saying?

What part do you think is being ignored? Some people just hear what they want to hear with these things. Quite frankly, I think he said everything he was supposed to say and was professional.

One little thing that stuck out: he said he obviously wants to stay in Buffalo and bring the team to the next level. He then said that ultimately, it's not his choice, something about his agent, etc etc. Actually, it IS his choice! He could take the offer that's on the table right now. Obviously, he won't.

    ------

I don't think Eichel will get to the offer sheet point. I was being a little dramatic by bringing that up. BUT, I think GMBot will wise up and give him whatever he's asking for. If I had to bet, I'd say it doesn't go longer than 20 games, after Jack is at PPG pace, that GMBot gives in to what he's asking for, to avoid the doomsday scenario I kept referencing.

OTOH, now seeing the Eichel quotes about how each side knows where the other stands and that he has no problem playing out the season without a new deal.

    I'm not stoked about that.

Exactly. He's willing to wait him out.

  7. I think Sam needs to be a center.

When we look at our teams' centers, though: Eichel makes painfully apparent Sam's lack of speed, and O'Reilly makes painfully apparent his lack of grit. I don't know how much he can improve these things, but I think that's ok, because...

For one, I believe Sam's stick-handling is severely underrated. Secondly, I think we all know he can create plays and scoring chances out of nothing. I think if he was given more opportunities to showcase this (i.e. centering a line with wingers who can finish), he'd show why he went #2 overall.

To quote Ted Nolan, "I'm not much of an X's and O's guy" (sorry, Ted), but I feel if Samson has wingers who have speed and grit, to compensate for his lack thereof, that line could be a very threatening force. I could imagine Sam quarterbacking zone entries by making perfect passes to a speedy winger, cycling it in the zone, and setting up plays. Another thing I love about Sam is his knack for knowing just when to get rid of the puck. He hangs on to it just long enough to draw defenders out of position, getting them to bite, and then knows exactly where to pass it to take advantage. If this was our 3rd line, with the match-ups they'd likely get, maybe we could even see 3rd line production like we haven't seen since Vanek played on the 3rd line...

  8. What would it cost us to get what we consider the top QB prospect? Do we need to just finish with a very poor record, or could we trade up with our current assets (personnel + draft picks)?

EDIT: the reason I ask is, could we get that prospect and still put some semblance of a competitive team on the field this season?

  9. Exactly, and what Jack wants here doesn't matter.

All of your responses make me feel like I'm either not being clear, or you're not getting what I'm saying.

What I'm saying is: Jack's last resort: wait for offer sheet. This gives him leverage. Whether he wants to play for Buffalo or not (which, the impression is, he does) is not relevant to his overall leverage.

  10. I'll say it again. Almost every center can play wing. That being said, I don't see a reason to acquire Doosh-aint.

Yes, but I buy the argument that, for example, we are not utilizing Samson to his potential by not having him at center. Don't you think the same would be true of Duchene?

And this is not for you, but for others-

You'd waste Duchene by not using him at center, and give up someone who flurishes at LW?

EDIT: I guess the other option would be moving ROR to left wing
