  1. I don't want to say that I think Johnson is a better goalie than Lehner, because I don't really know how to evaluate goalies, but the same thing happened tonight that happened a few times when they were the goalies two years ago. Johnson comes in to relieve and in the same game looks so much more poised and controlled that you'd think he was the starter, not the backup.

The problem is, he's too poised. He doesn't have that fighting/battle instinct, he doesn't fight for the puck, he doesn't break his neck trying to regain position when he's down, etc etc. I think he's a great backup. Unfortunately, he may be the best thing we have, ATM

Our PP is good when Jack shoots. They aren't setting Jack up enough. Every time he takes a one-timer it's dangerous. Why on Earth would we try to do anything but that?

All the teams have watched the tape by now, and they know the drill- take away the Eichel one-timer. I still agree with you, but it's going to be harder, and it's going to take some practice for them to create that opening. I think they attempted it once or twice, but it wasn't tape-to-tape.

  2. I disagree that Kane is a good finisher. A career shooting % of 9% is not a good finisher. In fact, of the guys last season who scored 25 or more goals, only Blake Wheeler and Ovie had worse shooting % then Kane’s career high 10.8% last season. Most were in the 13 to 14% range. Brett Burns, a defenseman, has a 9% shooting %.

Kane gets his goals by launching 300 shots a year and never looking to set up his teammates. In fact, he is a negative for Jack. Once Jack passes to him, he has zero chance of getting the puck back. Kane needs to go.

But we already looked up the stats and found out Jack and Kane scored more when on the same line...

  3. I'd say give Kane and Eichel more time to play in Housley's system. Yes, they've played together a lot and it'd be nice to see more chemistry, but adding Pominville to the equation adds another playmaker that Kane has to get used to vibing with on the ice. Obviously, Jack and Pommer have a natural chemistry. But the stats actually say that Kane and Eichel scored more when together on the same line last season. Having them out there at the same time, with a two-way forward like Pominville to cover for their lack of d-zone awareness, could really be a deadly threat, with their speed.

I wish it was clicking already. But I think the potential speed threat of Kane/Eichel in Housley's system is worth being patient for.

Reinhart makes Jack play slower. At the speed Housley wants to play at they are incompatible.

I also agree that this is an exaggeration. If you were talking about Foligno, then yes, absolutely.

  4. When Risto wasn't being used as the doormat for the hardest competition any player faces in the entire NHL for top 5 minutes in the entire league, apparently he can be a positive possession player. Somebody better tell those snotty pseudo-intellectual hockey writers that read naturalstattrick.com and declare themselves smarter than any fan who actually watches their team even one time.

Yes. He's the most talented player we've drafted in our lineup (besides Eichel), and he has the talent to quickly adapt to his new (less sh!tty) situation and really show what he can do.

  5. either way, no matter what we think about Kane, he is by far the most important item on the agenda now. We MUST sign him or trade him...please Dr. JBotto don't hang to him til the end of the season and let him walk for nothing (like we did with both Briere and Drury which still angers me to this day)

I think there is a possible scenario where he walks for nothing and we still make out OK: if we're pushing for the playoffs/in the playoff mix, and he proves to be an important contributor. If we can't come to terms before July 1 and we get outbid in FA, we could possibly use that cap space to bring in another FA. With a successful season (maybe even post-season? I know, I'm too optimistic), perhaps we could draw someone else good.

I wouldn't be devastated by this scenario, although I like Kane and hope we can find a spot where he will fit and excel, and sign him.

  6. Statistically, Lehner's shootout save percentage is .500. 1 for 2.

Shootouts are different from the regular game. Which is why we don't count those goals in a player's goal column.

I'm not saying this isn't true. But you can technically still say "Lehner hasn't made a save in the SO as a Sabre" and not be making a false statement.

  7. Just to clarify, about hitting posts (from SO conversation)- hitting the post does NOT count as a shot on net, and does NOT count as a save. You can argue, especially in a SO, that forcing the shooter to miss the net can be attributed (sometimes) to good goaltending, but you CANNOT say Lehner made the save.

  8. If Kane is having an outstanding season, that would likely indicate a lot of chemistry with Eichel, which would make me believe that the Sabres are doing well, toeing the line of the playoff bubble.  You don't just trade a player like that mid-season or at the deadline.  If his character flaws are such an issue, then why would a team give us "useful options" as you put it?  Wouldn't those teams be afraid of taking him on especially giving up futures?  Richie Incognito had some serious character flaws but the Bills gave him a 2nd chance and I'd say its worked out well.  Kane has stayed out of trouble a while now and if he's clicking with Eichel, then i want to see that pairing for years to come.

Thank you for spelling this out; some don't seem to get it. Spot on with every point.

  9. Do signing bonuses get paid on the first day of the league year? This year Moulson's base salary is $3 million with a $2 million signing bonus so depending on when the bonus gets paid his actual money paid still equals his cap hit. Next season his base salary is $2 million with a $1 million signing bonus so if bonuses get paid on the first day of the league year or something like that, we may be able to get a bargain bin team to bite after we pay his bonus.

And there's also the option of retaining part of his salary. I don't know how that applies to cap hit vs. actual $'s, though.

  10. Yeah - I am not seeing how this would hold up a 'financial' negotiation. There is not much to read into here, in my opinion:

Based on his production, the Sabres Mngt believe he probably falls in the approximate 9 million a year range. They want to negotiate based on 'what is'.

Eichel and his agent, wisely, want to negotiate on what they believe 'will be' - so they are probably asking for 10-11 million a year.

The reasons the negotiation has probably been so cordial; is that both sides understand the other sides position. So it is simple - if Jack put up a 0.75 - 0.80 point per game season, AND they fall short of the playoffs, he is a 9 million dollar player. Maybe 8.5.

If he averages a point a game - and serves as a winning force getting them into the playoffs, or close to it, then he gets his 10.5 or higher.

Both sides feel like they won with the latter outcome - and I am sure both sides will feel like they lost if the former happens.

I think it's as simple as that. I'm feeling pessimistic (perhaps prematurely) after the preseason; if Eichel doesn't really reach the level we had all hoped/expected, GMBot was a genius for doing this - as opposed to just giving him what he wants - like I was saying earlier.

True. I was thinking it gives him more leverage in talks, but I guess it's not like that would swing the pendulum either way.

I'm actually thinking that the Sabres mgmt isn't looking for leverage/looking to low-ball Jack; I think they just simply want to pay him what he's worth, but not any more, and use this season to determine what that figure is. It'd be upsetting if it ended up being around 9mil (for the sake of the team), but very prudent of GMBot to wait it out.
