Kevin O shared another great story of Crozier on Facebook:

The Amerks and Sabres lost an icon. Joe Crozier died today at 93. My favorite memory of The Crow: In 1987, after Game 5 of the Calder Cup finals, Leo Roth and I were flying back to Rochester from Sherbrooke on the team’s rickety prop charter plane. Sherbrooke thumped the Amerks 6-1. Absolutely schooled them. Somewhere above Lake Ontario, Joe sits down next to Leo and I, explains how important this championship would be, and then, as only Joe could do, strongly suggests that whatever we write, it can’t be anything but intensely critical. “Son, Joe said, “you gotta rip these guys.” The master motivator was simply doing what he did so well. Not that we needed any encouragement after the Amerks made Steven Fletcher look like Guy Lafleur that afternoon. RIP, Joe.

Quick, find one other current Sabre with more NHL contracts than games played. For something that’s as “common as can be”, I’d expect double digits then when we have like 50 or so contracts or whatever

    I’ll wait

There’s nothing to wait for. He’s a classic AHL veteran, and the reason he doesn’t have more games is partially his injury history.

But anyway, Priskie has 3 NHL contracts, 4 NHL games. Close enough.

Last year, Schuldt signed his 4th NHL contract with Buffalo. 0 NHL games.

There’s likely many more throughout the league. It’s a weird line to draw. What’s the difference if he has 3 NHL games or 20? The Sabres view him as depth, and someone they can call up if injuries hit.

5 NHL contracts with 3 NHL games played is a statistical anomaly

No. In fact, there are dozens of players who get 2 way contracts every summer to play in the AHL who rarely ever play in the NHL. It’s about as common as can be.

Man, I feel for these guys. Chasing a dream and not giving up.

Many of the AHL vets are making upwards of a 300-400K. The AHL is not the grind it used to be, and they make a good living.

Guy has been in the system longer than Girgensons.

Pretty sure we drafted him before Curtis Brown.

    - - -

We drafted Malone *9* years ago and he’s played a grand total of 2 NHL games, and 208 (2.5 seasons worth) of AHL games.

Dude has staying power, or sensitive photos of someone or something. Was signed to NHL contracts by Tim Murray, Jason Botterill, and Kevyn Adams twice.

More NHL contracts from Buffalo than NHL games played.

I know he’s had health issues, it’s the fact he’s still kicking around after a decade that’s the anomaly. Last season was the first noteworthy season in his career, hopefully it’s the new trend and he carves out an AHL role for his 30s.

I’m not really sure what’s so unusual about this. He left for another organization for a year, then returned to be one of the veterans. I guess it’s slightly odd that he re-signed with the Sabres as a FA, but he’s local, and the Sabres love his leadership.

My prediction for start of the season is that Sabres carry 8 D, with both Fitzgerald and Pilut on the roster; and that Bjork is the 13th forward with Peterka and Sheahan starting in Rochester.  Sheahan is the first injury call up at C, Peterka at W.

This is exactly what I’ve been getting at. At first I thought Peterka would make the team with Pilut being sent down. But Pilut has earned a spot.

People are projecting what they want to believe with Bjork, versus what probably will happen.

Tischke isn't as much of a puck mover as the others, but he's not exactly a solid defensive defenseman either.  Guess he's their "stay at home" guy.

Good luck with that Ukka & Malcolm.  You'll need it.

I would disagree. Tischke may have become their steadiest defenseman by the end of last season.

In this case, Sheahan, Peterka, Krebs, and Quinn are so obviously more deserving of a place on the NHL roster that I hope that GMKA and HCDG send Bjork to Rochester to show the othere guys that they deserve to be here and that no spots were unearned.

    I hope.

Contracts matter, whether people like it or not. They might waive him, maybe even 40 minutes from now. But they made a big thing about not paying big salary players in Rochester. And Lance seems the most in tune with the team, and he’s said a few times he doesn’t think they’ll waive hIm.

What has Bjork done to prove he is a viable NHL player compared to the upside of JJP or Krebs?  The best thing that could happen to Bjork (and the Sabres) is that he gets waived and picked up by another team.  With Sheahan, Malone, Rousek, Biro and Weissbach all in the organization, Bjork is easily replaced if lost. Maybe Appert and fix Bjork in Rochester if he clears waivers and turn him into an effective NHL player.

Also, keeping Fitz or Pilut over Bjork would only reduce our cap hit by about 350K.  We’d remain above the cap floor.

Of course, it’s very possible that someone starts the year with an injury and no one we are discussing gets cut.

Every year there’s a player Sabres fans attach to in obsessing about getting waived or moved out of the organization. And it almost never happens. Bjork makes almost 2 million, and I don’t see them waiving him, or anyone taking him off their hands.

I agree. It will be fun to watch the development of Kulich, Rosen, Kisakov, Cederqvist, Kozak etc. I think Weissbach and Rousek will be top end players in the A this season. Not sure what to make of the back end. Depends if Pilut goes down but they seem to have enough minor pros there to cobble together a respectable core.

Davidson just returned from Russia, and is a FA. So is Mark Alt. I’d like to see them bring back either one as depth ideally.

How?  Right now with Vinnie, Krebs and JJP we are at 13 forwards.  Bjork or Sheahan would be a 14th forward. If we carry 13 forwards, we can keep both Pilut and Fitz in the NHL.

I would agree that waiving Bjork and Sheahan is more likely than waiving both Fitz and Pilut.  I looks like there are 5 D in the Amerks camp after the recent cuts.  Add Priskie, Clague and Davies to that group and the Amerks have plenty of D even if the Sabres keep both Pilut and Fitz in Buffalo.

Because I don’t think they’ll waive Bjork with his salary. And he’s a perfect player to park in the press box.

The Amerks should be a really interesting team to watch this year. A lot of youth, skill and a good mix of vets.

UPL and Subban should give them solid goaltending all year and Houser is a solid AHL callup if needed.

I expect some struggles out of the gate. The AHL is a very good league, and Kisakov, Rosen, Kulich etc will need time to adjust. But eventually I think they’ll end up very good. I’m general, the divisions seems to have weakened. Utica certainly got worse, Syracuse did very little in the offseason. And I think Rochester got better.

Based on the contract they gave Bryson, he will have to clearly outplay Bryson to take his spot.  From what we've seen in preseason to date, he might do so.

Really expect they're going w/ 8 D because it makes practices run easier & Fitzgerald would be the D going down unless something changes these last 2 games.

I didn’t think they’d keep 8 D, but I think they will now with how Pilut has played. Doubt they want to waive Fitzgerald. That will put Peterka or Krebs spot in potential jeopardy.

I think Peterka could be going down to Roch. I haven't seen much from him during these preseason games. Hinnostroza is making a case for keeping his roster spot. I think Quinn looks pretty good and will probably make the team. Admittedly he's been getting PP time whereas Peterka hasn't, but IMO Quinn's 5v5 play has also been more impressive. I will also add that I haven't really been keeping up on twitter re: actual stuff going on at camp (who looks good in drills and stuff). Perhaps Peterka has been more impressive there.

On a separate note I thought Weissbach looked pretty decent? Seemed like an early cut to me.

Hinostroza was never batting for a spot. He was always a lock. Weissbach looked good, but guys in his situation effectively have no chance unless there’s multiple injuries.

  14. Super talented forward group. If Sheahan ends up in Rochester, that would be huge for them defensively. I think they need a good, defensively responsible veteran like him to balance out the rookies.

Defense looks improved. Honestly UPL will likely be the weak link of the team. Subban will likely be much better, but he’ll get less games in.

The AHL is tough to predict, but the Amerks look good. And I don’t feel any of their divisional rivals got much better. Utica especially lost a lot from last year.

I think you're right, except that as @Brawndo suggests, they simply told Sheahan that they would get to him and when Larsson signed in Europe Sheahan figured it out (wasn't explicitly told).  He's been around the league for a while, he understands how it works.  He wasn't their first choice but in the end he was their choice so it's all good.  Sheahan was hired to fill the hole left by Ruotsalainen, but not until the Sabres were sure he was the best player available for the slot.

If you actually listen to his interview today, he said that it all came together with Buffalo after someone signed in Europe. He said other teams contacted him earlier in the offseason. I find it hard to believe this whole deal was done in less than a day.

The timeline makes way more sense that the Sabres reached out after the Ruotsalainen signing, he held out for a 1 way deal, but ultimately signed with Buffalo.

  16. 16 minutes ago, Brawndo said:

Or maybe Sheahan’s Camp reached out to the Sabres earlier in Free Agency and they told them, We maybe interested but are working on a few other things first. One of these was an offer on the table for Larsson and they finalized Sheahan’s Deal in short order after Johan made His Decision.

I simply find it hard to believe the Sabres communicated to Sheahan that they signed him because their preferred player in free agency opted to go back to Europe. There was an organizational hole that was created when Artuu signed in Europe, and Sheahan was the replacement. Lysowski is pretty in tune with the team and seemed to hint to expect a player on a two way contract after Artuu signed.

  17. 3 minutes ago, Brawndo said:

Artuu signed in the Swiss League on 7/22.

Larsson returning to the SHL was reported by Elite Prospects on 8/10 at 10:15am and the Sabres announce the Sheahan Signing eight hours later at 6pm on 8/10.

    It was Larsson

So they pivoted to another player in a matter of hours, and also decided to tell him that he was their second choice after the other player they would’ve rather had, decided to go to Europe? Sure

I think it’s far more realistic that he was the depth player to replace Artuu’s spot on the organization

I’m not going to count on Power, Samuelsson and Krebs to be there because they finished the year with Buffalo, but they were at development camp, so you never know.

But Peterka and Quinn are still definitely prospects and should be there, so even without the three above it should be a very interesting forward lineup.

All these guys are on their ELC contracts and should be available

    Quinn Savoie Peterka

    Weissbach Kulich Rousek

    Kisakov Biro Rosen

    Bloom Kozak Nadeau

    Pekar Cedarqvist

Defence and goalie is another story.

Laaksonen is the only guy that fits. Lindgren and Komarev might be available. We’ve heard the Czech WJC goalie will get a look, and they will have to add a few tryout guys.

I would expect Declan McDonnell on the roster as well. Sounds like the Sabres are interested in him.
