A lot of seats available tonight.  Tix were hard to come by last year, so hopefully a large walk up crowd tonight. I’ll be in 123 and headed to Vesper shortly to pregame.

7400 for game 1 last season. Tonight appears to be tracking for around 6500-6800. A little behind last year but not terrible.

People forget that for decades, the first round of the AHL was very poorly attended in general. Even back in the 90s when I'd argued the Amerks were more popular, they'd get 3000 or 4000 for early round games routinely.

Live in the Rochester area now.  Haven't had Carbones in Rochester yet but nothing comes remotely close to Buffalo pizza.  My sons (11 YO and 8 YO) even notice the difference and like Buffalo pizza better.

Guidas and Clemenzas are the best in the area.  Marks, Salvatores, Perri's, Pontillos are so generic.

Just looked at the list...Authentic Detroit style is underrated, still not as good as Buffalo!

It's all preference. The quality isn't any better in Buffalo. I grew up in Rochester and went to college in Buffalo and found the pizza sauce too sweet and the pizza too doughy in many cases. People generally like what they grow up with.

7th straight road win and league-leading 14th road win of the season.

I have to hand it to Karmanos, he build a machine in Rochester. They are relentless, none stop forecheck. I watched the game tonight with the Springfield feed and the announcer was saying he hasn't seen such a tenacious group all season. Said they were non-stop.

The Amerks achilles heal is their power play. Ranked 22nd i believe going into tonight's game.

Also, great play at the end for the empty net by Kozak. He couldve tried to shoot at the empty net twice, but decided carry it and muscle for possession, wasting even more time and then once he got freed he made a nice pass to Rousek.

The makeup of the team is similar to last year. If anything, they're younger and less experienced because they lost Mersch, Weissbach, Biro. I honestly think it's Leone. He's a much better coach than Appert.

Should we attribute any of that to the marching orders given by the NHL coach, Granato vs Lindy?

I'm sure some of it is due to different systems, but I like how Leone has them playing. The only issue is special teams, which have been abysmal. Mostly the power play.

  5. I have to say, I really like Leone so far. This is a very young team, with several call ups and injuries, and the Amerks play a better, more structured game than any Appert coached team ever played. They lead the league in shots per game, and give up the 3rd fewest. With Appert it was always the opposite, routinely giving up the most shots in the league.

I also like his general attitude towards coaching. This isn't a practice team or a Sunday skate. Appert forced ice time to the prospects regardless, but Leone plays the guys who have earned it. As an example. Riley Fiddler Schultz was playing in OT, after he had payed a really solid game.

He had the same games played as Tokarski with a better GAA but worse SV%. He was also on a worse team. I would say for an AHL goalie he's fine. Not sure why we're saying he's terrible.

You’re not understanding why people are saying a goalie with an .884 save percentage in the AHL and .823 in the NHL is bad? That would make goalies in the 80s blush. It’s beyond bad.

Apparently Pegula’s pride in Rochester has taken a hit.

    This sucks.
My take: you can’t make money running an antiquated, million-year-old arena so here’s the keys to everything but the locker rooms.

The arena is in desperate need of a dramatic makeover.  And while I’m not a billionaire and think differently than billionaires, this sucks. The Rochester partnership won’t effect his overall wealth. Pegula opting out means he’s counting small zeros when his legacy could have made a dramatic difference to ROC.

    Pegula pride? LOL nah.

But unlike “sell the team,” Rochester may not be able to afford that. Sigh.

I’m not sure what sucks about this. What did the Pegula’s do running the arena that was noteworthy at all? Good riddance. Has no impact on the Amerks. Hopefully whoever comes in does more.

For Him or the Amerks ?

pretty sure he did the same thing last year and that turned out ok.

he was the captain of the team and learnt a lot going to the WJC.

Both. Did nothing for his career.  He went two months without a goal. Had he stayed and kept scoring, would he be closer to a call up? 100%. And as someone who listens to Apperts interviews, he’s made it very clear, without actually saying it, that he hated him going. It’s screwed up his year. And for what? He went to the WJC last year. How many second year pros go to the world juniors? It was a bad call.

It's everyone's dream to win gold for their country don't be that guy

It’s adversely affecting his season. I don’t blame him at all for wanting to go. But Adams needed to be the adult in the room and explain that going to the WJC and then flying across the country for the all star game was a terrible idea.

They beat Laval at home on Nov 23 & 25th.  Guess how many home games they’ve had since then? Three before last night. You’re inventing reasons to be mad. It’s almost like you enjoy it.

I hear you on the trend.  But they’re the reigning division champs and conference finalists. Veterans throughout the roster.  This team deserves the benefit of the doubt to get things figured out.

This has been the most successful 2.5 year period in Amerks hockey in a generation.

But hey, guys like contempt, SabreMike and Amerks6969 flame away. Burn it all down. Everything sucks and no one is trying to win. Enjoy your echo chamber thread of negativity.  I’ll leave you to it.

It was pulled from the Kevin O article.  Even so, everything else said is accurate. I don’t care about giving them the benefit of the doubt. No one would say anything similar if this were the Sabres and a similar situation.

    Y’all need to chill.
Hershey is the best team in the AHL at 26-6-0. The Amerks hung tough, but they were by no means supposed to win this game nor were they the better team.

They have 5 regulation wins. 5! They haven’t won in regulation since November. They haven’t won a home game since November 18th. This team is miserably bad. Who cares if they hung with Hershey? Hershey did what great teams do on the road, they played a simple game and waited for the Amerks to make a mistake, which of course they did with 6 minutes to go, and took advantage.

  12. I am incensed at Appert for when he pulled the goalie. Absolutely ridiculous. The Amerks are just crossing the red line with 2 minutes to go and he’s waving frantically for Cooley to come to the bench. Meanwhile the Amerks turned the puck over at the blue line and that’s all she wrote.  I hate this coach.

I know this is a game thread, but the Amerks have too many vets on D to have given up the second most goals against in the AHL.

ROC is now 11-5-2, and have a winning percentage of .667. The teams sandwiched around them in the GA category have a win percentage of .389 & .412.  This organization needs to figure out how to systematically improve team defense.
The Amerks are giving up more than four goals a game on average.

Their record is a complete fluke. Bad team bailed out by 3-4 exceptional offensive players.

To everyone talking about defensive issues this season, are we going to ignore injuries and the never-ending lineup changes? The org was so desperate that we played Metsa as a forward… for multiple games. At the start of the with a healthy roster the team was far better defensively. It’s an issue, but it’s not as bad as it’s being made out to be when all circumstances are considered.

Zero excuse for literally being the worst defense in the league. They’re playing guys that should be excellent defensemen at this level. Clague, Prow, Stillman, Davies etc. They’ve all been healthy. It’s just a bad system and bad coaching.

Not to mention, they’ve been bad defensively all year. When healthy, banged up. Doesn’t matter. Bad since opening game.

With so many NHL capable defensemen and a seemingly decent goalie (Tokarski), why are they giving up so many goals?  I thought that side of things would be improved this year for the Amerks

It’s Appert. 22nd defensively in the league last year. 30th the year before. They turn the puck over nonstop, and they play a very passive style defensively. They collapse very low, never pressure the puck carrier. It results in a lot of zone time for the opponent, lots of free shots from the point, and tons of rebounds. That’s just my amateur opinion, but people should take note next time they watch the Amerks how passive they play defensively. It’s clearly doesn’t work, and Appert is either too stubborn to adjust, or the Sabres are mandating they play this terrible style.

I’ve lived in five states now and I’ve yet to find any hot dogs close in quality to sahlens. If you buy beef sahlens, maybe, but the pork blend can’t be touched.

    Wawa is also super overrated.

I prefer Zweigles and Hoffmans personally, but Sahlens are solid as well. Can’t go wrong with any of them.
