The lack of defense play seems systemic to the entire organization from the parent club on down.

The Amerks are scratching Metsa or Novikov or Clague because they have so much talent on defense. Yet their results on ice have been disastrous. It’s systemic. Both teams came into the season unprepared.

  2. The entire organizations complete refusal to play any defense or even attempt to play responsible hockey is really bizarre. The Amerks have given up nearly 150 shots on goal in 3 games and 1 period. And they’re doing it with arguably one of the most deep and talented defensive corps in the league. That’s shockingly bad.

Is Metsa injured or is there another reason he isn’t seeing ice time?

Healthy, just too many D. Johnson, Prow, Davies, Stillman, and Novikov are the locks to play. Clague recently sat, as did Cecchoni. I’m guessing he’ll play Friday as Appert probably doesn’t want him sitting for too long.

  4. The Amerks were more talented, but wanted to play pond hockey too often. No commitment to defense, peeling off checks, turning the puck over etc. The organization in general, from Buffalo down, just doesn’t have the appetite to commit to playing responsible hockey. I don’t get it.

Appert even called out Rosen by name in his post game interview for his abysmal effort on the OT goal. He never calls out players by name in a negative way. That was surprising.

They could but I would be surprised if Novikov was not fed ice time. He's already played 2yrs of pro hockey.

Different league, different style, different ice sheet. He’ll play plenty, but if anyone here has ever listened to Appert even a little, they would know his thoughts on Prow. He won’t sit unless it’s a rotation or he needs a rest.

Could be.  But which of those 6 that Inky has listed ahead of him gets bumped to play him?  Stillman is an NHL caliber D man and Clague is a true tweener.  Johnson and Novikov will be playing every night because much to Amerks fans chagrin, the A is a developmental league 1st and foremost and those are the 2 prize D prospects.  Cecconi was the only D-man that knew what his side of the blue line looked like some nights, and Metsa is probably going to get a lot of ice time himself from the propsect perspective.  Guess Cecconi could be odd man out, but as the only defensive true AHLer, maybe not.

Prow was leaned on last year.  But could see scenarios where he's literally 7th on the depth chart many nights.  Which makes Davies 8th.

Cecchoni, Novikov and Metsa would likely sit first. Or they’ll do a rotation of everyone. Novikov is young, Russian and adjusting to a new ice sheet. I can definitely see them bringing him along slowly since they have so much depth. They may also play 7 D, which they did in the playoffs last year. But Davies and Prow are definitely not going to be spare parts.

I'll be so disappointed if they keep three goalies. That 3rd goalie slot takes away a spot from an up and comer, and that value of developing your young prospect is much more valuable than having two mediocre back-ups.

Off the top of your head, can anyone else point to other teams in recent history that have used 3 roster spots on goalies? I'm drawing a blank but I don't follow the rest of the league anywhere near as close as I do the Sabres.

That spot really means nothing. The top 12/6 is generally set. An extra forward or defenseman will just sit. They’re better off playing and developing in Rochester. When the time comes that a player is needed, they’ll be ready. Appert has shown the ability to develop these players.

What were you using to stream it? I have 3 tvs in the house and one (Samsung) would buffer constantly when I was using it’s built in aps. I put a fire stick on that tv and now it’s been perfect.

I streamed other stuff directly through that tv (Disney, Netflix, prime) and they al worked normally. I had read a few things that the software for Samsung and youtubetv is absolute crap and my tv supported that idea.

Roku Ultra that was wired. I’ve since moved to Hulu Live TV and happy with it.

Houser, Tokarski and Coolley can all be starters in the AHL. Two 3 headed goalie monsters in this organization.

I would think Comrie or UPL gets moved or picked up on waivers.

Houser isn’t really an AHL starter. Decent backup. But he’ll go down to the ECHL and will come up at some point to give them some quality minutes.

If this is a problem with all customers, I would think they would be out if business by now.  Makes me gun shy about trying it.

I didn’t have the issue with DIRECTV stream. Then I switched to YouTube and it was really bad. Now to Fubo and the issue is gone. I’m sure you’re right, and maybe it’s my tv or settings, but YouTube was by far the worst culprit.

  11. I just canceled YouTube Tv. They increased the price, and the words never matched with the mouth, though maybe that was a tv setting, but I played around with it to no avail. Fubo so far works better, and I don’t have that issue.  Plus MSG.

The Amerks are now in the market for someone to run their PP. Prow can be re-signed to an AHL deal. The incoming defensive prospect reinforcements are not especially known for PP prowess. Metsa and Jandric have scored some points throughout college. But Novikov and Johnson probably don't play on a 4F-1D PP unit.

Prow is already signed through next year. If Clague gets qualified, can easily see him in Rochester.

So is this a good thing (or not) vs. playing in Rochester???

It’s good for Rochester. Not that I have anything against Östlund, but another young, raw prospect adjusting to NA hockey would’ve added additional challenges. This could open up the Sabres to re-signing Jobst, or bringing in a veteran AHL center that will likely help a bit more. Östlund will be a more polished prospect when he plays for Rochester in a year.

I don’t actually think it’s the right decision for him personally, because it’s just going to delay his NHL arrival, but sounds like playing in the SHL is important.

  14. This kid really blew it. He missed out on an opportunity to play big minutes for a team making a championship run. Where would that have put him in training camp this fall? Had he played well, he could have been penciled into a spot in Buffalo. Instead, he’s sitting around at home. Someone gave him very bad advice.

Is there a spot for him in the top 9?  Maybe if they go back to 12f and 6D?  With weissbach and Biro both out

one thing I know Savoie is ready for is to play on the PP

Yes, easily. You make room. Weissbach is probably back for game 1. For me it’s simple, you insert Weissbach & Savoie and take out Eliot & Olischefski. It’s really not easy to take out Olischefski in particular, but Savoie is way too talented to watch from the press box.
