  1. What I see is a team that has a mentality problem, they all want to score that goal but none of them want yo work for it. They don't wanna get to the dirty areas at both ends of the rink to make the plays. So, let them try their way. How many more losses like this until they start buying in to what they're being told! Sure we could recycle coaches every year or the players could take accountability. I'll take a few rough loses in October, but there better be some light here soon

  2. Yes.. because the goalie can't cover an uncovered player. Which goal would you say that Johnson should have saved?

Probably none of them in all honesty, it's been on the players lack of effort as well as big time brain farts, just a little more effort is all, maybe let it squeak by instead of selling the farm yknow. Kinda adds to the this I don't want to be here mentality

  3.

    He deserves it.

I'm there. Sorry, Dan. You may have been a shite coach, but the players bailed on you because they are mentally weak.

He deserves it? More proof he's a selfish player who only plays when it benefits him is all I see

Don't get me wrong, I am LOVING his game right now, and I was expected it. But if you think he's doing it for the crest on his jersey you're mistaken

  4. Honestly? I think he overplayed the shooter to help emphasize how poorly 82 (won't even try his name anymore) is playing and not taking away the pass. It's a joke. 2-1.. the pass CANNOT get through.. it CANNOT. The Sabres are playing the opposite on D. Every pass gets through.

Forsure it's not his fault by any means, but my 2 year old son could have scored 3 of those goals like he was just sold on no real dangle or anything

  5. Evander.

If the rest of the team followed his example, for effort, how much better would we look?

Take on the identity of your captain. Make Kane captain.

3 games in a contract season doesn't exactly scream "make me captain". While you can't argue he has been our best player this season, and is clearly out working everyone,if this guy gets even an A I'm burning my sabres stuff and picking a new team

  6. I don't but I can:

    1. The kid has NHL talent: he may not have shown the ability to use it yet professionally, but his package of skating, vision, hands, shot and passing is top drawer.

    2. He had last year to experience the higher pace and culture shock of the pro game and will be better prepared mentally

    3. He's transformed his body from that of a high schooler to that of a college student; he's clearly better prepared physically

    4. There is an opening at left wing for him right now, and that opening may get huge if Matt Moulson and Benoit Pouliot continue to regress and Evander Kane moves on.

    5. There is all kinds of evidence of skilled-but-weak 18-year-olds not being ready, only to make the jump the following year. Mitch Marner, Nikolai Ehlers, Sam Bennett, Alex's brother William, our own Sam Reinhart just to name a few recently. The difference is those players went back to junior and dominated while Alex played pro and struggled. Given his dominance at the WJC last year however, he likely would have dominated juniors as much as they did. It's the poor pro numbers that have skewed people's perspective.

As I said, I don't expect him here until he has proven himself at the AHL level, but there certainly is a reasonable case to be made that he could be.

Agree with all of this it's not out of the realm of possibility, although it is unlikely.

That being said if he has a good pre season, I could see him getting a couple games to start the season. If he was tearing it up he could play 82 in the NHL. He would have to be incredible though, more likely being counted on as part of the culture change in the A

  7. Me? Haha.

I also admit that fact makes me hopefully biased towards them. I definitely dislike them.

But I legitimately believe they are building from the wing in, and I don't think that works. Their organizational depth at C is quite poor, and it's not so easy to flip players from a position of strength for one of weakness, particularly when their strength, wingers, is the least valuable position in the NHL.

    You me and JBot lol

  8. Building from the wing out won't work for them. Their centre depth is nothingness after Scheifele, pros and prospects included. Byfuglien will be falling off a cliff by the time their young players are ready for a run.

And, all of that really has nothing to do with Wheeler being ranked ahead of Malkin. Malkin is an all-time player. He's better than Blake Wheeler by a GOOD margin.

Agreed. It's a faulty list. And I'm not even arguing about Buffalo's placement.

The author of the article is from Winnipeg. Winnipeg is ranked 2nd overall. The guy says the league is built on "Star Power", and the team with the second most star power missed the playoffs by a good margin? Bogus. Ridiculous bias for a professional article, and a large problem with modern sports journalism. Not an overstatement.

Malkin is clearly better. I think maybe he's saying wheeler is to right wing as Malkin is to center. But the article is definitely trash.

However I could see us finishing in the 23rd range, but I wouldn't come to that conclusion from the article.

My reply was geared more towards Winnipeg being headed in the right direction them anything else. Don't let Chevaldayoffs tremendous patience, how conservative he is fool you. They have alot of depth, they could lose buff and be okay. Watch for some of those assets to be flipped for needs (center, goaltending) when the time is right.

If the jets had league average goaltending they would have made the playoffs multiple times already.

The author is from Winnipeg?! LOL that explains everything now.

Even so, I appreciate the analytical spirit of the article. This is essentially a top 125 NHL player ranking grouped into 5 meaningful tiers.

By the end of next season, I bet an updated list would look more like this for the Sabres:

    1. Eichel - tier 1 - moves up one tier (deserves his tier 2 ranking at the moment, but has the talent to move up one)

    2. O'Reilly - tier 2 - holds steady (maybe even a little too high, but whatever)

    3. Ristolainen - tier 3 - makes a first appearance (should have been on this current list as tier 5...hopefully Housley reduces his minutes a bit to increase performance)

    4. Okposo - tier 5 - holds steady (fair assessment)

    5. Reinhart - tier 5 - holds steady (has potential to eventually rise a tier or two if he gets moved to center)

    6. Kane - tier 5 - makes a first appearance on list (would have already made this list if he had a bit more consistency in his career)

Look at that! That gives us 15 stars next year....enough to be a solid Stanley Cup contender, according to this guy's analysis.

Also, Mittelstadt and Nylander have the talent to make this list in two or three years.

Uh oh... You know who else is from Winnipeg right?

  9. I think he'll miss about a dozen games, and Housely's system isn't kind to forward production.   Jack won't be asked to carry the puck as much due to defensemen rushing the puck and joining the offense.   Why will that cause a drop in his production?   Hear me out.   Most of Eichel's goals come from the outside, shots from high in the slot, above the circles, etc.    In Housley's system, (assuming he incorporates NSH's o-zone attack), they like to cycle the puck up high in the zone to free up a d-man jumping into the high slot for a scoring chance.    No longer will Eichel circle deep in the zone come up high and shoot.   Instead he'll cycle up high with the d-men or act as a decoy deep in the zone.   This will significantly reduce his scoring chances.

Sounds alot like the Ovechkin won't produce under Trotz a few years back. I have to hope that Housley isn't coming here trying to make us the Preds. We're not the Preds and if we try to play their system we will be bottom 5 in the league.

39G 39A for 78 pts, or in case of injury I still think he will maintain right around .95PPG

  10. I think he finished top 10 in save percentage last year? He has played parts of 7 seasons and a recent comparable signed for just under $6 million a year. I think he has a good shot at a decent amount.

Might be a stretch to call Jones a comparable. Since May 2015 only 4 goalies have signed for an AAV of 5M or more and they were each at least 5 years in term.

    Carey Price 8 x 10.5M

    Frederick Andersen 5 x 5M

    Martin Jones 6 x 5.75M

    Braden Holtby 5 x 6.10M

What i would consider comparables over that same time frame

    Cam Talbot 3 x 4.17M

    James Reimer 5 x 3.40M

    Jake Allen 4 x 4.35M

    Jacob Markstrom 3 x 3.67M

    Petr Mrazek 2 x 4M

    Scott Darling 4 x 4.5M
