  1. Basically, players pay tax based on where the game is played. So moving to a state without an income tax only affects their 41 home games. In other words, half their salary. And nobody actually pays the top rate anyway due to deductions. Then tack on escrow, and yea, the net difference for athletes across states is pretty small.

Serious question, is what you say about playing in different states affecting the taxes paid really a thing?

  2. They shoud've traded him last year in the Summer while he still had some value. Another year of underachievement last season and he's virtually worthless right now.

I blame JBOT for not being more active last summer and getting some return for these clowns (Nylander, Larsson, Girgensons, Bogo, etc..) while they still had some value.

I could argue that none -especially if you exclude Nylander- of those guys had value last summer. Certainly BOGO. He had no value in wpg.

  3. In my experience when dealing with sensitive issues some sides might think the other is way out of line when maybe they aren't. Some people can't agree to disagree. I probably have an opinion different than most but don't mind having discussions seeing the differences on both sides. My vote (do I get a vote??) Would be make the thread, if you don't like reading it, don't click on it. If you can't have a respectful discussion with differeing points of view, don't click on it. Those who can should be able to have the discussion though right?

  4. I'm also aware that he has shown absolutely nothing as a pro. No development, no spark, no flashes of brilliance. He was a mistake as a first round pick. Hey, it happens. League wide the hit rate after the top few is around 50%.

2nd and 3rd round picks that don't make it aren't busts. Only about 20% of them ever develop into NHLers.

Right and only 50-56% of first rounders develop into NHLers. So what's the % needed to be classified a bust?

I don't think anybody but fans care when they were drafted to be honest. What GM would say "he's playing like a 20th pick and not an 8th, gotta ship him". What position any player is drafted should be irrelevant to their development.

Going to try to clarify a bit more. If we were trading for a dman. Virtually identical stats and size, let's say 2 very comparable players. One was drafted in the 1st, the other the 3rd. Would that matter as to which we would like to pick up? Of course once upon a time the expectations were greater and lesser respectively, and we would think one may have a higher ceiling, but they're values would still be the same no? If Nylander becomes a middle 6 guy ya we probably could have done better at 8, but where they are drafted has 0 to do with their development

  5. Lehner has a career sv% of .915 let's not forget lol. If we sign Mrazek I will be rattled he's a statically worse version of Lehner. If the alternatives are Bernier, ward might as well try for Sparks or Pickard from the leafs and roll 2 young guys and hope one runs with it. If not trade for a solid vet. Would be open to Hutton at 2x4M but not 3x3.5M

  6. I just think it's interesting that we were "apparently" close to a deal where draft picks were the return... So either Jbot was high on on of the player's available and thought they could contribute immediately; or he thinks we are that far out of contention that were still after futures; or he thinks O'Reilly is part of the problem

  7. So you want to get worse now and in the future?

Heiskanen Dubois, Strome, Draisaitl, Drouin, Galchenyuk, Huberdeau, Gudbranson, Duchene, Bogosian, Turris, Toews, Jack Johnson...

How many recent 3rd overall picks are better than O’Reilly?

Probably someone better in every one of those years taken on or after 3rd... Whatever that's worth... No comment on the trade itself

  8. No contender is picking up BOGO period. If we want to move him, cost is a 1st+ for nothing in return. Only scenario where somebody takes him, would be similar Arizona/Datsyuk. Need to get to the floor so you take on a bad contract for a picks package. We don't have picks(to trade) to address needs, nevermind throwing em away for someone to take out our trash.

Better off just getting him his daily 8ball to sit on IR. No I can't prove that but you can't disprove it so shut up haha jk

  9. I would rather just do something like try to pry Gudlevskis away from the Islanders. Or sign Enroth.

I think if you were to pry a goalie from the isles at this point in time, it would be from their cold dead hands.

Besides Gudlevskis is a UFA... Don't think 2 unproven goalies is the way to go

Edit... Also didn't Enroth bash us pretty bad after last time?

  10. The last one makes a lot of sense. The NBA thing even makes some sense. But the paucity of European coaches in the NHL is just bizarre.

Not to get off topic but FWIW I think a European had captained an NHL team to a cup twice in nhl history? Something like that and the first one was 2008 I think no joke. Might have something to do with it, but might not be relevant.

  11. By wing depth, you mean adding 164 points to the top lines in exchange for ROR and his 60, right?

Look, I said it was a wild thing just because I was bored and that I woudln't even do the moves myself, so I was expecting heat because even though we ###### suck and are by far the worst franchise in the NHL over the last 5 years people are still overprotective towards our roster, but calling a team with

5 defensemen considered 3D or better, and 4 that play top pairing roles well, 2 of them likely bona-fide Norris-contending 1D (Dahlin, Trouba)

an 82 point winger, Jack Eichel, Sam Reinhart, and a 64 point winger bolstered by an average 3rd line and perhaps the best 4th line in the league

    Brayden Holtby in net

not a playoff team, is patently absurd

I wonder how long it would take Eichel to figure out you're actually GMTM in disguise and fire you.

You lost me at 8 mil for Trouba. I watch lots of Jets games here, he’s not anywhere near that good.

    Doubt he comes close.

Exactly what went though my mind, almost didn't read the rest after haha. I wouldn't believe you if you told me he was even nominated. Average 2nd pair d IMO

  12. OK -- as I posted in the playoffs thread, I'm ready to commit to Braden Holtby as my #1 offseason target for the Sabres, with Grubauer as my fallback.

It looks like the Caps have enough cap space to keep both, but they also have a good goalie prospect in their system -- Ilya Samsonov, their #1 pick in 2015 -- and the plan reportedly is for them to bring Samsonov over from the KHL for next season. So it's fairly likely that they trade either Holtby (if they want to free up more cap space) or Grubauer.

Holtby is under contract for 2 more years at a $6.1MM cap hit. His numbers declined this year -- he was 7th in the NHL in wins, but had fairly pedestrian GAA and SV%. But over the last 3 years, he's #1 in wins, #7 in GAA and #13 in SV%. And the 2 years left on his contract means that it's not an Okposo-like enormous commitment that goes on forever.

Grubauer played 35 games this year and had better GAA and SV% than Holtby. Grubauer is cheaper and is trending up, while Holtby is expensive and trending down (although he's had a great playoffs). If Holtby is put on the market, a number of teams will be interested.

Could the Sabres get him for Nylander and their #2 pick this year? Who says no?

Utmost respect for Holtby, he's the real deal. However to me it makes little sense to pick up a guy whose a UFA before were a relevant hockey team. Rather go after a younger goalie who will grow at be reaching his potential in that timeframe.

  13. There are five teams left. I can't bear the thought of any of them winning. Here are my reasons for each team. Also, with the exception of Tampa, consider the "I don't want another team winning their first before the Sabres do" thing in play for all of them.

Washington: No, their fans have NOT earned it. They might have had fans when they were in Landover, and they might have fans now, but I had 30 tickets to a first-round game in 1998 and couldn't give them away. It wasn't until the finals that anyone in the city even noticed that team was in the playoffs. I lived there--I even owned a home there--and I know first-hand that there were no hockey fans anywhere when I lived there. Also, ###### Bondra.

Nashville: Same. No one can identify five people who were fans before last season.

Winnipeg: Smug ######. No way. Hell, move 'em again just to teach the Winnipeggers some humility.

Vegas: First of all, I hate the name. The city is "Las Vegas," not "Vegas." It's not the "Frisco 49ers" or the "Big Apple Yankees." So I don't like the name. Second, the expansion draft was WAY skewed in "Vegas's" favor. Too much. Expansion teams shouldn't be winning Stanley Cups, and their new fans haven't suffered enough yet.

Tampa Bay: Another team where fans seem to surface only when they're winning. (That goes for all three of the sports in the Bay Area, actually.)

    So ###### 'em all.

Ovechkin deserves a cup. Most people who don't like him, still respect him. Poor guy couldn't escape the 2nd rd bust narrative.

  14. Wow, what a can of worms I opened. Sorry! Can I take back the "blue collar" reference?

One of the nice things about Buffalo and why most hockey players love living in WNY are the locals. The love and respect the players, but also give them their private space. It's being in a Canadian town without being in Canada. Many of the football players feel the same about the Bills Mafia. Ask Fred Jackson how he feels about Buffalo and it's people.

Dahlin will be just fine here.

Frankly all excuses for the bad team from Leadership issues to locker room issues to players not listening to disgruntled $8 mill players are frankly all BS and will go away as soon as we get enough talent. Bad teams makes excuses and good teams win.

This is why this off-season is so important. Keep the core, go young and try to steal some value players from other teams. Use other teams' cap issues against them. Identify someone with upside that could be a cap casualty elsewhere and bring them here in trade or FAs. No one over 26.

    We are starting with quality

Jack, ROR, Casey is a great spine.

We only have 2 long-term wingers (Sam and ERod) for our top 9, but maybe between Pu, Nylander, Asplund, Olofsson, Smith, Baptiste and others we'll find 2 or 3 more over then next two years.

We are 3/4 to a good playoff Caliber D (Dahlin, Risto and Marco) and even have a potentially solid 3rd pairing of Guhle/Nelson/McCabe.

Lastly we need goaltending. Ullmark deserves a shot, but we really need iron clad insurance.

What does this have to do with blue collar racist quarterbacks?

  15. Potential breakout candidates around the league imho would include but not be limited to, and in no particular order: anders Bjork boston, Daniel Sprong Pitty, Milano and Bjorkstrand from clb, donato boston. Guys that I think are less likely to achieve 50 points but establish themselves as useful nhl players with potential: Ottawa Colin White, Kevin Roy Ana, tolvanen Nsh, Dal Colle Nyi, Dylan strome Ari, ty Rattie stl. there's a ton in this category I could update with more if anyone is interested- same goes for defense.

Our team expecting a good year from Mitts should hit 45-50 pts, while I expect steps from most of our young guys a dark horse for me would be CJ Smith, I could see him having an impact.

  16. I find it interesting that it is even speculated that ROR may be a problem or cancer in the dressing room...if that were the case do you really think that he'd be chosen year after year to represent Canada in all the various tournaments he has played in (which is many)? Furthermore, he is named captain or assistant captain every time and is always a leader with class and heart. I really think while we have many avenues to explore when it comes to trades and improving the team, trading ROR simply out of anger or emotion would not turn our good at all. He would be very hard to replace. We already moved a great talent in Kane and unless we get him back that is a huge hole. Moving ROR would leave us with out a shut-down center to play against the other team's top forwards (which most nights is a thankless job ROR did game after game without complaint)

Might get hated for this but... Ya forsure, ROR is a stud for us all season, whoever doesn't know, skilled guys get left off team Canada because of attitude, never are they invited repeatedly or named captain or Alternate. Eichel said all the right stuff at locker cleanout day but that was about the only day. If any center is a problem it's him. Not saying he is, but 100x more likely him then O'Reilly.
