  1. I am fortunate to have a microcenter a mile from my home. Their parts prices are competitve with newegg and others. They also have great sales. I compared the prices I paid to the same components on pcpartpicker.com and I came out ahead $50 on my build.

    I was looking at the 1060 video cards, microcenter has a 970 from Gigabyte w 4gb gddr5 for 188. Is the 1060 w 6tb really worth the $100?

  2. I just finished building my first PC and haven't yet purchased a video card as the i7-6700K came with a decent graphics chip to begin with.  I keep reading up a video cards and continue to get more confused.  I'm looking primarily to do video editing and not gaming.  Any suggestions?

    My system is

    i7-6700K

    GIbabyte Z170x-Gaming 5 Motherboard

    16GB DDR4

    250GB Samsung SSD 750 EVO

    1 TB Hard drive

  3. http://sabres.buffalonews.com/2016/09/03/power-take-girgensons-new-deal-is-a-good-fit/

I agree with Bucky that Big Z isn't a first line guy on a good team or contender, but I think he has the game to be a 3rd line center on a contender.  While I also agree this is his year to prove it, I think he needs to be put in the right situation by the coaches and management.  The funny thing is I think the best thing for him this season is to start the year in a 3rd/4th line center role with Moulson on one wing and Bailey on the other.  I'd like to see DD basically tell them to go out there forecheck and be physical and see what happens.

  4. I think he is 50/50 on re-signing him. i think the deal was made because GMTM wanted to balance the D, move up in the draft and felt he was likely to lose Pysyk in the expansion draft as McCabe had moved past him on the depth chart. Basically the Sabres were only getting one more year out of Pysyk so worst case we only get one year out of Kulikov.

From GMTM's perspective if Kulikov plays well and fits in, he can re-sign him in the two weeks between expansion draft and free agency, if he doesn't, then that is 4 mill to use on someone else.

  5. Here is a question. What if GMTM acquires a Fowler, Shattenkirk or Lindhom or another puck mover? Would going to 4/4/1 really be so terrible given the depth in our organization at forward vs defense?

Lets say we acquire Fowler from Anaheim and for a package including Girgensons with a pick and prospect.

That puts our D keepers at 4; Bogo, Risto, McCabe and Fowler.

Under that scenario we'd protect ROR and Okposo with 2 of Ennis, Kane, Larsson, Moulson, Foligno and Carrier. Most likely Ennis and Kane. With prospects like Bailey, Nylander, Fasching, Baptiste and others, would it really be so terrible if we lost Larsson or Foligno to expansion? With Georges and Ullmark available,we might not lose any of the forwards.

  6. If he resigns Kulikov its another story though.

    then I'd go with 4-4-1.

O'Reilly, Okposo, Larsson and Ennis.  Larsson can be replaced with whoever plays better than he did last year.

Kulikov , Risto , McCabe, Bogo.

If Lehner completely fails I'd protect Ullmark.

But I don't see any of our goalies being snatched, there will be better targets out there for las vegas.

GMTM won't be re-signing Kulikov before the draft even if he has a great year.  The draft will be June 17&18, while free agency starts 7/1.  GMTM likely re-sign him within of the draft however (assuming a good year).

As to the goaltenders, what if both Ullmark and Lehner have good seasons?  What then?  LV must draft 3 goaltenders and one player from every team.  Grabbing a good prospect like Ullmark with NHL experience is distinctly possible. Lets say GMTM leaves Moulson, Georges, Ullmark, Deslauriers and Carrier exposed, who would you take?  I'm taking either Georges or Ullmark.

Someone else said this thread may be premature.  While I obviously disagree as we (as a group) continue to raise the issue in other threads, I think expansion will somewhat color what GM's do this season from the timing of signing UFAs (such as Kulikov as discussed above) to deals at the trade deadline and deals this off-season.  Expansion issues is one of the reasons GMTM didn't acquire Fowler or Shattenkirk (and no one else has either) and one of the reasons Pysyk was traded.

Also pinning this thread and watching as opinions evolve over the course of the season should be fascinating.

  7. We seem to touch on this in every thread in which we discuss the roster. The Big Z contract thread is no different.

There is a really good tool on Generalfanager.com to play with the roster. http://www.generalfanager.com/teams/expansion

According to the site most of our key kids are exempt including Nelson, Jack, Guhle, Bailey anc Reinhart. However the two prospects that aren't exempt are Ullmark and Carrier. We also have only 2 must protects in Okposo and Bogosian.

Using the tool it looks like the best avenue for GMTM is the 7/3/1 list.

In Goal: we can protect either Lehner or Ullmark but not both. Both are Rfa's at season's end. With Petersen coming and Kasdorf it will be interesting to see what happens Ullmark. One note, we must make a goalie (signed or RFA) available.

Defense: Obvious protect McCabe, Risto and Bogosian. Georges made available

Forwards: Obvious protect ROR and Okposo. The pick 5 from Ennis, Larsson, Foligno, Girgensons, Kane, Carrier and Moulson. Right now i think Moulson and Kane would be made available, but Kane could play his way back into GMTM's good graces. Moulson is much less likely.

It will be interesting as the year progresses to see how we all feel about this list as the season progresses. I can almost guarantee that my list above won't be the final list by season's end.

  8. This is a great deal for the Sabres. I've said before that Big Z had no leverage and this 1yr proves it. I also like the deal for Z's prospective. He gets a decent raise and has another year to prove the he deserves good money and to prove he is part of the long-term core.

His battle now is to win a top 2 line LW job or beat put Larsson for the 3rd line center.

  9. Cody Franson talking about his injury (eye?) recovery and how last season was the worst of his professional career.

I'll say it again, for a team that improved so much last year, the Sabres enter training camp with a ton of players with something to prove.

Kane, Ennis, Franson, Bogosian, Moulson, Lehner - all of them had poor seasons or off-seasons.

I figure neither Jack nor Sam got the fanfare they probably expected. Okposo and Kulikov have that new team thing going.

Larsson, Foligno and Gionta are playing for new contracts. Zemgus and Risto are in tough negotiations.

It's not the normal self-satisfied situation you get after a 27-point improvement.

    I am optimistic.

I agree about much of this except we also got career years out of ROR, Risto, and Johnson, while other guys like McCabe and Larsson used those failures to secure NHL futures by picking up the slack coupled with the emergence of probably the two most talented young Sabres (Sam and Jack) to come along since Mogilny and LaFontaine (or maybe Housley and Barrasso).

I agree that this is the reason to be optimistic.  You have to figure that McCabe, Jack and Sam will take another step forward.  Also that Lehner, based on his limited performance last season, has the stuff, if healthy, to be a top tier goaltender.  Add that at least 2 of Moulson, Ennis, Big Z and Kane should have better seasons coupled with the addition of Okposo and I can see that Sabres scoring 230+ goals next season.  They do that and keep the goals against down to last years 215 (or below) this is playoff team.

    230 isn't a crazy number either.

Line 1 Kane ROR Reinhart - They scored scored 64 last year.  Is there any reason to think that can't score 70, especially if Sam improves and Kane stays on the ice?

Line 2 Ennis Jack Okposo - Okposo typically score 18- 24 goals, Ennis averaged 20 for the 2 years before getting hurt last year and Jack could easily jump from 24 to 30.  How about 70-75 for this line?

Line 3 Foligno Larsson Gionta - They scored 32 last year, but a full season together and healthy could garner 35? More?

Line 4 Moulson Girgensons Bailey - Z and Matt had 15 together in their bad years.  Bailey has 20 goal power and skill, and is an improvement on Deslauriers. Granted no 3rd/4th rookie is score 20, but he should do better then Nick's 6 goals.. I think 24 is reasonable, but that 30 goals for the line is a fair estimate,, especially if Z and Moulson rebound at all.

Defense - Last season Risto (9), Franson (4), Bogo (7), Gorges (2) and McCabe (4) had 26 goals, now add Kulikov and this group should improve by at least 5-10 goals.

Add this up and you have 70+75+35+30+35 and that's 245 as an upside estimate.  I haven't yet included the 10 or so goals scored last year by AHL call-ups and fill in players like Colaiacovo.  I do think 230 is a probably more realistic estimate however as the original estimate relies on everyone remaining mostly healthy.

  10. I grew up on his movies. Stir Crazy, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Silver Streak, and Willy Wonka are still among my favorite films. Right now I'm watching Harrison Ford and Gene in one of secret favorites the Frisco Kid.

Watching this movie is breaking my heart. He was a great comic actor and always seemed like a wonderful man. The world is a little darker place today without him.

On the bright side these great films will live on forever.

  11. GMTM has been preaching r/l balance on D since he got here. He moved Pysyk ® to get Kulikov (l). He now has his balance. We'll have about 4 mill in cap space after Z and Risto are signed and i'd love to upgrade Franson as well. However no one is taking Franson off our hands. So to upgrade Franson we r going to have to spend our cap limited space or create more by finding someone to take Kane off our hands. Also remember that both Lindholm and Fowler are LD. Replacing Franson with either player un-balances the D lines. I don't have an issue with that, but GMTM clearly does.

The best solution in the short term is to hope Nelson is ready and beats out Franson in camp. Then as we see how the season goes, maybe GMTM can make a hockey trade to get a RD upgrade.

  12. How about this?

    Kane ROR Reinhart

    Ennis Jack Okposo

    Moulson Girgensons Bailey

    Foligno Larsson Gionta

    Ennis - O'Reilly - Okposo

    Kane - Eichel - Reinhart

    Moulson - Girgensons - Bailey

    Foligno - Larsson - Gionta

    Deslauriers

    Kulikov - Risto

    McCabe - Bogosian

    Gorges - Franson

    Lehner - Nilsson

I'm confident Bailey is ready and able to play third-line minutes in the NHL right now. I know many others aren't, but I'm willing to slot him in there.

Nylander probably gets a nine-game tryout and has the SKILL to play in the league but it's tough to imagine he's got the size or strength to do it.

Guhle and Casey Nelson both have shots to make the team and could slot into the bottom pairing over Gorges and/or Franson.

Carrier will probably get a look this year at some point on the left side.

If Lehner goes down I imagine Ullmark gets the call to start over Nilsson.

That's what I'm looking at barring any major changes.

Hoss, We posted very similar lineups. However I placed Kane with ROR because I wanted someone with ROR's experience and personality to hold Kane accountable on every shift. I also swapped Okposo with Reinhart to give Jack a more experienced and more phyiscal player on his line to replace Kane. Aren't you worried about placing the small Ennis with the smallish Reinhart on Jack's line?

  13. PAS,

The work your doing is important and this kind of history should not be lost. I am part of a cross boarder family. I have close family in Canada and in the States. I am also an ancestry member and a good amateur geneologist and will also do some snooping for you and have done similar research in the past. I would also love to read to book.

In my case, I had a great Uncle (US Army) and a first cousin of my father's (Canadian Army) who both landed on the Normandy beaches. Sadly my cousin died a month later after being shot by a German Sniper. He was 25. His story is both brave and poignant. He was a happy and gregarious person according to my dad. He had been wounded multiple time in previous battles and kept getting sent back to the same hospital in England. There he charmed a nurse during his multiple visits and married her during the war. Sadly, she never re-married and died in 1986. An article about him was published in the Toronto Observer back in 2011.

Through ancestry and other sources I was able to uncover their marriage license, her death records, and his military records. Don't give up. I swell with pride everytime I think about my Uncle and cousin. They risked so much for freedom and their accomplishments should never be forgetton or taken for granted.

  14. I was watching the NHL Tonight on the NHL Network the other day and they reviewed Vesey's fit with the Rags. They project him as Hayes' LW on the 3rd line. I don't see many 3rd line wingers getting big money. Hayes has averaged 40 pts in his first two NHL seasons. He has never showed the playmaking skill to feed a sniper like Vesey. This further proof of the strange rationale behind his decision to join the Rags. The gap between the skill of Eichel down to Hayes is the Grand Canyon. I agree with an earlier post that he is going to regret this decision.

  15. This latest news on Lehner is not encouraging. This is a huge year for Lehner. He is playing out his bridge contract and although still an RFA, a big season this year will get him a big long-term deal. A bum ankle will derail this season for him and because of GMTM's failure to keep Johnson or to secure a good backup (see Enroth) this bum ankle could derail the Sabres season as well depending on whether Kasdorf or Ullmark can make the jump to the NHL this season.

I believe that Lehner has the skill necessary to be a top tier goalie in the NHL. I thought he showed some excellent play despite the bum ankle, especially that snarling bear moment. I love his competitive spirit. However, I'm now worried that his injury history will keep him from reaching his potental. The Sabres can't invest big money in a goalie who hasn't and can't start play a full season because of his health.

On the bright side I think it is a wise decision on Lehner's part to not risk the ankle in a pre-season tourney when so much is on the line for him and the Sabres. The burning question is now who starts for the Sabres if Lehner isn't 100% to start the season?

  16. I think it's an important topic because it has to play into how you think about making roster moves this off season.

it was certainly factor in the Pysyk Kulikov deal and will be a factor at the trade deadline.

I want to see a letter from Bettman to the Sabres that exempt players are defined as a players who 2 years or less of pro hockey experience.  If this is the case the Sabres are in great shape at forward and defense.  One of the nice things for Buffalo is that expansion may help us get rid of a bad contract or two and create a roster spot for one of our good prospects.  We will be exposing Gorges, and Moulson and depending on how they play this season Ennis and/or Kane could also be exposed.  That's nearly $19 million of contracts.  I can see Kane or Gorges being taken by LV.  If Gorges is drafted that instantly opens a spot for Guhle and about $3 mill in cap space.  Losing Kane would open a slot for Nylander and save us $4 mill in cap

The area of issue is goaltender.  The Sabres can protect one goaltender only and must make available one goalie who is under contract (or an RFA with a qualifying offer)  No NHL game requirement exists for goalies.

Under the expansion rules.  Lehner would be our protected goalie.  Nilsson isn't available for the draft because he is an UFA and both Kasdorf and Ullmark are exempt.  GMTM will have to expose either Kasdorf or Ullmark despite their exempt status or re-sign Nilsson before the expansion draft or acquire another goaltender to satisfy expansion rules.

One other interest scenario on defense is what happens if Kulikov has an excellent season and GMTM wants to retain his services. Unfortunately GMTM can't re-sign him until after the expansion draft.  If he does re-sign him before the draft, he'd have to expose McCabe to expansion because Bogo has a NMC and I doubt he re-signed McCabe for 3 years just to lose him to expansion.

    In thinking about it further

D - Protect:  McCabe, Bogo, and Ristolainen. Expose: Gorges  UFA: Franson and Kulikov Exempt: Nelson & Guhle

F - Protect: ROR, Okposo, Larsson, Foligno, Carrier, Girgensons and Ennis.  Expose: Deslauriers, Moulson and Kane.  Exempt (Hopefully): Sam, Jack, Fasching, Nylander, Baptiste and Bailey

G - Protect: Lehner,  Exempt: Ullmark  Expose: Kasdorf  UFA: Nilsson

  17. Moulson has a modified NTC, not a no movement clause. He is eligible for expansion.

The Sabres will likely use the 7, 3, 1 option.

The 7 forwards Okposo, are they only certainty and probably Ennis. However for Kane, Larsson, Big Z and Foligno it might depend on who proves this season they are part of the solution. As of now all can be kept. However me might need or want to protect Carrier in the AHL.

The 3 D are Bogo (nmc), Risto and McCabe. We must expose someone who actually plays, so Gorges will be exposed. Franson and Kulikov are UFA's

My biggest worry is how the NHL defines 2nd year player. If they say guys who have played 2 years or less of pro hockey are exempt we are good to go, but what if they say guys who have finished 2 years of their ELC are now 3rd year pros? We'd the have to protect Jack, Sam, Bailey, Fasching, and Nelson. That would be huge mess.

  18. My biggest complaint,if you will, with your list is saying Moulson is done. He isn't done. He may be done as a top 6 player, but with the right center (Larsson?) with decent passing skills, i think he can be a very effective 3rd line LW and 2nd line PP player. If we got 15 goals and 20 assists from a 3rd line winger, I think we'd all consider that a success.

I'm also not real worried about the goaltending. Lehner was very effective with a 80% ankle last season when he played. The ankle is now 100%. This bodes very well for the season. If he does get injured again, Ullmark, not Nilsson is the answer and Ullmark played well in Buffalo last year. I'm not worried about Ullmark's Roch numbers as he was playing behind a horrible D group.

My biggest concern is a potential D pairing of Gorges and Franson and like you I'm praying Nelson makes the team.

  19. Speed is a fun movie, but you probably could have streamed from Netflix or Hulu or comcast on demand or got the DvD from the library for nothing.

I was looking at our cap numbers on capfriendly and they have us at 64.8 right now with Big Z and Risto still to sign. However, they include McCormick (1.5), Fasching (925K), Kasdorf (612K), and COR (700K) none of which are likely to be on the team when the season starts. They also include Nelson (650K) who I think has a reasonable chance of making the team. I also think Bailey (670K) has a good chance of making the team.

That puts our cap more like 61.8 if Nelson and Bailey make the team before signing Risto and Big Z. Add about 7 to 7.5 for Risto and Big Z an'd that puts us at around 69 million to start the season. Granted Cody's 1.5 is really LTIR, but regardless we still have about 3 mill to work with if GMTM wants to add a LW or D. We'll have more if can get rid of Kane or Franson.

Depending on how Nelson, Guhle and Falk do in camp, I can easily see Franson demoted to Rochester.

Frankly I want Gorges on the 3rd pairing this season, but not with another ploder like Franson. Having two large and slow skaters on the same pairing in today's speed NHL is a scary proposition.

Anyway the point of this cap discussion was to illustrate that GMTM still has room to maneuver if the right deal comes along.

  20. I would be shocked if they do not bring in a veteran Mike Weber-level depth defenceman to make Guhle and Nelson force their way on to the roster.

I would not be shocked if they are perfectly fine letting COR or Grant fill the 13th forward spot if the kids are better served in the minors to start the year.

Sure Murray will make a trade if he can improve the defence or at left wing, or if another GM makes a big push for Girgs or Kane or Ennis. But trading the latter three would mean selling low and I think Murray is too smart to do that.

The opening night lineup is already on the roster.

That is what I thought, but LW is totally a question mark right now

    1) Kane - before the legal issues he was penciled in as No. 1 or 2 LW, but now he could get suspended by the Sabres and or the NHL depending on how the legal proceeding go.

    2) Ennis - Coming off a serious injury and likely moving from RW to LW.  Will he be back to 2014-15 form or is he going down the Tim Connolly path?

    3) Moulson - Can he skate well enough to play in the top 6 and if so, will he even produce?

    4) Girgensons - Who knows what position he is going to play and once CDB gives him a position will he produce offensively?

    5) Foligno - not exactly a top 6 kind of guy and is on a one year prove it deal

    6) Deslauriers - Fun 4th line or 13th forward.

Those are your current candidates roster candidates?  Do you really feel good about any of them?  Do you give Carrier a shot in the NHL and is he a top 2 line forward? Other possibilities I guess are Bailey, Okposo, or Reinhart moving from RW to LW, but that isn't my first choice.  Best hockey scenario is that Ennis finds his game and Kane escapes legal problems without getting suspended.  If I had to guess right now, maybe GMTM swaps Girgensons to someone who needs a 3rd line center for a young winger during camp.

  21. With Vesey issue settled.  The Sabres looks as follows:

Forwards Under Contract (12) Ennis, Kane, Okposo, Eichel, ROR, Reinhart, Larsson, Gionta, Foligno, Moulson, Deslauriers & COR.   Plus prospects Bailey, Nylander and Rodrigues.  RFA: Girgensons

Defense Under Contract (5) Bogosian, Gorges, Franson, McCabe and Kulikov.  Plus RFA: Ristolain, prospects Guhle and Nelson and Vets Falk and Grant.

Goalies Under Contract (2) Lehner and Nilsson

So is this the roster we go to camp with?  I'm beginning to believe this might not be the case because of Kane and losing Vesey.  There are just to many questions at LW.

  22. 1) Kane

    2) Vesey.  I thought (and still think) we are his best option.  I hoped that for 2017-18 our top 6 would be Vesey, Nylander, Okposo, Reinhart, Eichel and ROR.

    3) Pysyk for Kulikov.  I like getting Asplund.  I realize GMTM knew that he couldn't protect Pysyk in the expansion draft and wanted to balance his 3 D lines. However, I'm not a Kulikov fan and I felt the GMTM never gave Pysyk a fair shot at proving what he can do and I hate to see him leave.

    4) Franson still a Sabre.  This was an awful signing and he played awful most of last season.  The thing that can happen to the Sabres is that Nelson beats Franson out in camp and Franson is demoted to the AHL to create cap space.
