  1. totes?  ###### had to look that up.

I'll bet Kane doesn't miss more than 10 games.

1 -  They're learning a different system, it's highly likely they take a step back during the first 20 games or so.    The question is how many points will they need to make-up to get themselves into contention down the stretch.

2 - Lehner wasn't just unlucky.. he was plain awful, sliding out of position, too aggressive... and I've already seen those same tendencies in pre-season when guys get in close to him.   The book on Lehner is out and it's hold the puck, hold the puck, hold the puck and just wait for him to move out of position.     He's aggressive by nature that's part of what makes him good, but also hurts him in the shootout.

3 - I agree, I think the defense will be much better... much better at creating offense... likely a bit worse as defending in their own end.    That's my biggest concern with this club, IMO they did nothing to help reduce their SAT against, which was ranked near the bottom of the league for last forever years.    Can Housley fix that?   Time will tell.

    1.  I get that, new coach new system, but, the Leafs got through all that pretty quickly and really turned it around fast, they went from last place to playoffs in one off-season.  Granted they had some luck, no big injuries for example, but there's no reason we can't do the same this year.

    2.  We shall see about Lehner, you could be very right, but still, I can't accept that we won't get any luck whatsoever like some posts, wide shots and whiffs, or Lehner making some stops.

    3.  Any improvement will help and I believe that Housley is the man for that.

I am a little worried about October though, having a west coast trip that early is rough.  Although, if you assume we arent going to play well early on while they learn the new system, then maybe it's good to get a west coast trip out of the way early.

  2. Why does everyone assume Kane will be unaffordable?

Eichel, O'Reilly, Ristolainen, & McCabe are on good contracts. Gorges contract goes away & Moulson almost definitely will be traded.

Ummm no.  What team is going to want him?  High cap hit vs lack of production...the only way the Sabres rid themselves of Moulson is a buyout or simply the end of the contract.

I don't think the Sabres got Eichel for cheap at all. If he played this season and put up 80+ points and then signed for $10 million per then I'd probably say we got him for a discount. $10 million per season based on the two seasons he has played for us isn't a bargain right now, even though it could potentially become one.

You know who's got a bargain of a contract? Mark Schiefele. $6.1 million for a ppg 1st line center who will be in his prime for the duration of the contract. I'm hoping we can lock Reinhart up to a similar deal and he turns out to be just as productive.

I guess the league is turning into, "hey, let's pay him for what we think he's going to do"  His rookie season was fine, and last year he was pretty darn good despite the high ankle sprain which probably nagged him all year.  He was almost a PPG player and we don't know if he was even 100% coming back from the injury.

He's going to be under the microscope for years, and the bar is now set very high, we will all accept nothing less than 80 point seasons and perennial playoff births.  I sure hope he has it in him.

  3. That post was also made a couple weeks ago, a couple days into preseason.  It was a thought.  Maybe, just maybe, Bailey will spend some time in Rochester trying to develop that role and if he comes up (when Kane inevitably gets injured) and does well, it could make him an option.

I have no problem with signing Kane to an extension, but I'm also okay with moving him for assets.  It doesn't hurt to consider what the backfill plan is.

My bad, I didnt realize the date of that, i think we were all hoping to see more improvement from guys like Bailey, Baptiste, Fasching etc. too bad it didnt happen, yet i suppose.

I am of the opinion that the Sabres will be on the playoff bubble all season, it'll be a tough pill to swallow considering trading your top LW at the deadline when you are 'in the hunt' or in a playoff position.

  4. Bogo is already injured and Scandella hasn't played yet.  Sounds similar to Last year already.

In fairness, I did say "Bogosian-whatever" and he's day to day anyway, and Scandella, not playing in the pre-season was likely pre-cautionary, everyone knows he can play and I saw he will be ready for action Thursday...so, not like last season at all

  5. And who knows?  Maybe Housley is grooming Bailey to be the next Kane.  If it takes, they can trade Kane at the deadline for picks/prospects.

I think that's a bit of a stretch, Bailey has showed virtually nothing to prove he belongs in the NHL for anything more than the 3rd line.  I'm not saying that it can't happen, but, chances are he's not coming close to Kane's output at the NHL level.  I do hope i am wrong on that though, I'll gladly eat crow.

  6. It's not like the Sabres had 54 points last year and need a 20 game swing in the win-loss category this year to make the playoffs.  There's no reason we can't make the playoffs barring any catastrophic injuries again.  I just can't believe that Eichel will miss another 21 games, Okposo 17, RoR 10, Kane 12 and numerous others like Ennis, Bogosian, Larrson etc that also missed significant time.  4 of our top 6 forwards all missed a lot of time, that is no small thing.  If the top four stay healthy, how can you not think that we can win 7-9 more games and be in playoff contention?

Also, there's just no way that we are going to lose every shootout again, Lehner wasn't good for sure, but, he also got no luck, not one opposing player shot it wide, hit a post, or whiffed, which happens all the time in SO's.  I would be willing to bet that Lehner worked incredibly hard on SO's this offseason.

Then there is the defense, I have to believe that Scandella, Beaulieueueaueauiui, Antipin is going to be better than Franson, Kulikov, Gorges (I know he's still here but he will be in the press box a bunch i bet)  McCabe was a stud under Housley in the WJC's, he is going to be better and keep getting better.  Risto=Beast, then there's Bogosian, whatever

Maybe I am the eternal optimist but, I think we win 10 more games than last year, without question.

  7. Actually, they're taking Eichel off of the PP because he hasn't signed a new deal yet.

Let's keep that to the Eichel contract thread, thanks +sarcasm+

That was also one of Antipin's strengths from his time in Russia. Check out some of his youtube vids where he plays on the powerplay in the slot/net front. Crazy from a "defenseman".

I'll have to take a look, pre-season time is the worst time of year for me with the fiscal year ending, too busy to keep track of that stuff, now that October is here, i have wayyy more time.  I'll be watching video's of Antipin and the pre-season leading up to Thursday.

  8. I did not get to see any pre-season games or much as far as video from games, i read that Antipin looked good towards the end of the pre-season, is that about right?  Could he be 3-4 material later in the season?

I am guessing that Housley likes what he sees by putting him on a PP

  9. How about you just get the NHL app for your IPAD like i do.  $111.96 for single team season, averages out to $1.36/game, obviously there will be a few MSNBCSN games, so maybe you end up paying $1.50/game.  Beats the hell out of crappy websites with pop-ups, illegal crap or legal stuff that just sucks and freezes.

  10. Trading cost controlled assets for Duchene is bad.

You now in another thread, want to trade Reinhart, McCabe and stuff. So you want to trade an NHL forward who's cost controlled, scored more than Duchene last season, and is almost 5 years younger, plus additional things for Duchene. Terrible terrible trade idea.

Not to mention he says they would want Moulson to replace Duchene on the wing when he's a center.  I'd like to have Duchene, but certainly not for the price the Avs are reportedly asking

  11.

     Option1-

    Kane- Eichel-Griffith

    Girgensons- ROR- Okposo

    Pouliot-Reinhart- Pomminstein

    Moulson-Josefson-Larsson

Still would love to see a trade of Reinhart, Moulson, and McCabe to Colorado for Duchene

     Option2-

    Duchene- Eichel- Okposo

    Kane- ROR- Pomminstein

    Pouliot- Girgensons- Griffith

    Nolan- Josefson- Larsson

First off, that's not getting you Duchene.  Bob Mackenzie said about a month ago that the asking price top 2 D-man, high end D prospect, NHL forward and 1st rd pick.  I like McCabe but i don't think he qualifies as top 2 on many teams in the league, hes a solid 3-4.  If the Avs were willing, it would be McCabe, Guhle, Reinhart and a 1st maybe 2nd and that is just way to much for Duchene, who is a center by the way not a winger.  We dont even know Reinhart's ceiling yet and his floor is likely 50 points, he's practically equaling Duchene's output.

  12. Absolutely.

    Very true.

That hurts. How much can Walt Powell help? He's back from suspension.

My hat is off to McDermott. Through 1/4 of the season (I know - long way to go), he's the early leading candidate for coach of the year.

I was skeptical, deeply skeptical, of the guy. Through four games, it looks like I could not have been more wrong. And I'm delighted to acknowledge as much.

i am happy to be eating crow, i had the Bills at 1-3 at this point.

I am not really familiar with Powell, i didn't really see any pre-season games.  It's a shame, Taylor and Mathews seemed to finally get some chemistry over the last two games and now this.  Bills should look to teams like the Giants and Colts, throw a 2nd and 5th at the Giants for Brandon Marshall maybe, could work.

  13. "I think this debate - like the Reinhart debate and the Larsson debate currently occupying the board - is more proof that style matters.

It's not just what you do, it's how and when you do it, that matters to people.

There is a pretty good argument that Thomas Vanek was every bit the player Danny Briere was. Or Ryan O'Reilly is superior to Chris Drury. But our opinions are coloured by the joys those Briere/Drury teams provided that the O'Reilly teams haven't and the Vanek teams never did.

We all have things we look for in a hockey player, that we value more than others: I love guys that outthink the opponent, and guys that are willing to get dirty and pay the price and that's why I like like Larsson despite the fact he doesn't skate well or produce much. Pokey focuses on the latter. Pi loves skating, thus his infatuation with Tyson Barrie despite his disastrous defence, Deluca loved Lucic for his machismo to the point he ignored how many games he slept through. Some guys loved Pysyk for his smoothness. Freeman looked at him and said "what does he actually do out there?" Some guys see Bailey's skills to and get excited. Flagg says he might look good some times, but he doesn't actually accomplish anything.

I'm not saying we can't appreciate different nuances, but we each tend to focus on those areas we value more. We tend to judge our players - positively and negatively - a lot more strongly than we do guys on other teams. And once we make up our minds, we struggle to change them. "

Dudacek gave us this lovely post in the training camp thread. Describe in here your ideal NHL player. The guy that, if your team had him, would be your favorite all-time. You can use real players as comparables or as the legitimate answers. You can also list the styles you detest that other people place value on.

    My contribution:

My ideal forward is high skill and high IQ. He can stickhandle through people at speeds which most players can't reach without the puck. He manipulates the space around him at will. At center, he is Connor McDavid exactly. I could watch that guy play hockey 20 hours a day and not tire. The most skilled NHL player to ever exist, with elite-of-the-elite vision and IQ, and jet packs on his feet on top of that, perhaps the greatest NHL skater ever, hands not only able to keep up with his feet at that speed but somehow three steps ahead. At wing, he's like Nikita Kucherov, Patrick Kane. Malkin is another I adore, a thoroughbred horse whose peaks bring him higher than those of some generational talents. All of these guys can move in straight lines, laterally, or both at exceptional speeds, and their hands are faster than that, and their brains are even faster than THAT. That is what I love.

My ideal defenseman can deke guys walking backwards on the blue line to keep the puck in. They may not be the greatest in the d-zone at rubbing guys out and being tough in front of the net but there is no passing lane that goes unchecked by a quick stick, and their angles are great. Ryan Ellis, Erik Karlsson, Victor Hedman are my guys. Rasmus Dahlin - if this kid translates, he could revolutionize the way defensemen use the line and control the offensive zone.

I can tolerate a lack of speed if IQ and hands make up for it, but those players need both, not just IQ (Doan) or just hands (Pouliot). Not a fan of speed-only guys either (Grabner, Laich, Hagelin - though he's becoming a nifty guy). I need my D to move the puck, of course.

I don't like any goalies, which is why roughly .0003% of my posts talk about goaltending. I'd just as soon switch every NHL goalie out for a robot that performs exactly to league average, as long as they still personalize the masks/pads. I suspect this opinion would be much different in an era where pads and styles weren't like they are now.

What about the rest of ya?

So what you're saying is, you want a whole team of complete players with an all around perfect game?  Sign me up!

  14. BS. Connolly never went to the hard areas and rarely showed up in big games or in tough situations. That's a fact. Granted, in today's game he would probably be a much better player but that wasn't today's game and he has to be measured by the standards of his era. He was softer than soft. He defined soft.

Peca was heart and soul and that trade was among the worst in team history. That move, and then the failure to pay either Briere or Drury created the negative legacy that this team has lived under for a long time. Over paying ROR and Okposo has perhaps helped remove that shadow a little, but I'm not sure it is completely gone yet.

I feel sorry for him for all the concussions he got but if he hadn't been so soft, he wouldn't have been as targeted and he would have been able to take a check better. Today's game is different.

I don't think that RoR is over paid.  He signed around the same time as Tarasenko signed with SL for about the same contract.  People who look only at points can't understand why he's paid what Tarasenko is paid, I would argue that is because it goes beyond points.  RoR is one of the best in the league in faceoff wins, took almost 1800 last year and averaged more than any other center in the league per game and was 5th overall last year in winnning %.  He can play in every situation, PP-PK you name it, he does it.  He's quite the leader too, the O'Reilly practices after regular practice.  He does all this and still hits over 50pts a year and that would've been better last year if it weren't for injuries.  I think RoR is paid perfectly to be honest.

As far as Okposo, he got market average for his output (and Buffalo may have gotten a slight discount on the cap hit because it was reported that he really wanted to come to Buffalo), unfortunately we didn't get to see his best because of his injury/illness whatever it was, a full season healthy, no reason he can't hit 60pts.  The only thing about Okposo's contract is the length, someone on the board mentioned this and i couldn't agree more, 4 years would've been ideal based on his age, but whatever.

  15. Twitter is great for news and entertainment but really only moron fans tweet stuff about their teams

you have no idea the hot-takes i have read recently.  "Eichel wouldve been a 4th liner behind Drury-Briere-Roy", "Reinhardt (amazing how so many fans get that wrong) is a complete bust","Risto is a big slow oaf that wouldnt be top pairing on a real contender" blah blah blah, i read #sabres for the entertainment and when i want a good laugh, I read Garth from hockeybuzz.

  16. There is one consistent element to the Leafs rebuild. All their young players are fast. Some of them are really fast.

Speed is what the league is about now. Leafs got this before we got this. JBot/Housley get this but they have to work with what they have for now.

Here's the disconnect. We, as fans, wanted a rebuild like Toronto got.We feel like we were supposed to be them. Most of us are tired of waiting and want playoffs now. For them however, this is year ONE of a new rebuild. They will impose their system, get the players they have who best fit that system and slowly remove the ones who don't. So unless a bunch of guys step up and "fit" (which at this point doesn't seem to be the case) you can expect a step (maybe a big one) backwards before moving forwards.

Now MAYBE a change in philosophy is enough, like Cassidy in Boston who moved them from Julien's outdated ideas to the new nhl way and it can turn quicker, but I don't think we have the talent to do that, or maybe to say it better the RIGHT KIND OF TALENT to do that instantly. Hope I'm wrong on that, hope they surprise.

My feeling however, is that we will take a big step backwards this year and the team we see at the end of the year will barely resemble the one that starts the year. I also firmly believe, however, that we are finally on the right track, we just have a longer way to go than we would like.

as in, they will have less than 78 points than they did last year, or do you mean they will start off god awful and then make an heroic run to 9th?

maybe its because i am an optimist when it comes to the Sabres, but, i think they come out flying right out of the gate.  Eichel will have a huge chip on his shoulder and is going to want to prove he's worth the contract he wants.  Barring any catastrophic injuries like last year, I don't see why we can't win 8-10 more games than last year and push for the playoffs

  17. Ugh. I don't think the enforcer role exists anymore. Every player gets slashed, punched, speared, or hit in some illegal fashion. No one on the other team is worried about a punching bag jumping them for their deeds.

You're absolutely right, it's a way of the past and players seem to have more respect for each other than they did back then, not to say there aren't dirty hits, we just don't see them as much.  I highly doubt we ever see a Dale Hunter creaming Turgeon or McSorley trying to actually kill Brashear etc.

  18. I have seen some Bills fans comparing this defense to the 85 Bears and 00 Ravens defenses, and I'm like hold the phone people, we've played Josh McCown who career win % is something like .300, an injured Newton who had shoulder surgery in the off-season and has looked like garbage through 3 games, and a rookie 6th rd pick I believe.  Let's see what they do against the Falcons juggernaut.  If the Bills keep the Falcons under 24, I will start drinking the Kool-aide and call them elite, still wont compare them to the above named defenses however.
