  1. I'm certainly not advocating they should have built around Tyrod, but for a group with a win now mantra, hiring a coordinator who would design an offense for all of Tyrod's worst qualities wasn't exactly logical. Trading up for Zay Jones. Thinking Tolbert (and now Ivory) are viable #2 RBs. The current state of the WR corps. Hiring a new OC with no track record of success. There are a lot of reasons to question their judgment on the offensive side of the ball, or at least, not just trust them implicitly.

I forgot about that signing, yikes, right on the heels of his statistically worst season ever.

  2. Need some advice.  Every year my brother and I send funny/gag gifts to each other for our birthdays.  Last October on my b-day, my brother found the best gift in years, a Marty Moose Eggnogg glass that Clark Griswold drinks from in National Lampoon's Xmas vacation, its a thing of beauty.

How can I top that?  Any inputs are greatly appreciated.

  3. These are humans, they're not robots..... they have emotions and losing hurts.    At least losing *should* hurt... maybe if more players hated to lose as much as ROR does, they wouldn't be in this spot.

Coming off one of their worst seasons in franchise history you want them to trade their top PP point producer, second leading scorer, and the greatest face-off artist in the history of the game?    My goodness.

If the guy is truly a locker room cancer, doesn't matter what his stats are, you try to move him and upgrade elsewhere.  I think there are plenty of GM's out there believing he needs a change after all the losing here and would give up a 2-3 D-man and good prospect player.  I'd like for him to change and be around to pull us out of this mess, but if not, then so be it.

  4. First thing's first:  Cut bait

Buy-out Bogosian: This needs to be the first act of contrition.  Getting him off the roster.  Not that I dislike him as a player, but when you cannot stay on the ice for more than a 10 game stretch and you've had multiple differing injuries it hurts the teams ability to go out and find suitable options with that kind of cap hit.  Move on.

Trade or Buy out Pominville:  This is a contingency, based on the ability to find a spot for him.  I'm "okay" with holding onto his cap for the season as it's in the last year.  However, his skating continues to drop steadily.  It's time to go younger, and even if that means a learning curve and a slower ability to product points in Baptiste, it's time.

Let Nolan, Gorges, Josefson, Pouliot all walk into free agency.   Do not tender Lehner a contract.  Move on while it's available with no sentiment or attachment.  Lehner showed that he had next to no value at the deadline.  So there's not much sense in keeping him around another season.

Move one of Larsson or Girgensons:  It's time to move on from one.  Pick your preference.  Neither is a bad secondary player.  However, at this point we know what you are.

Make a hard decision on the leadership group:  Ryan O'Reilly, Kyle Okposo.  While we're likely stuck with Okposo, O'Reilly will have a ton of value.  You cannot really replace his minutes, forward draws and steady consistent two way play.  However, at this point there just needs to be a sharp swift decision if he's here long term.

Re-sign:  Casey Nelson, RD:  This was proof that some players move at a slower pace, and when given opportunity that they can thrive.  There still are some things to clear up (more so on the defensive side).  However, you saw some glimpses of a top six defensemen in Casey this year.  He shouldn't be hard to retain, however retaining him is a key.  Don't let a positive go.

    1. He's a liability because he's hurt so much, question is, do we just suck up his contract one more year and be done with him, or buy him out and be on the hook for part of the salary for several more years?  I say, let him finish it out, maybe he miraculously plays 60 games, is effective, and we can uload him at the deadline for a 4th to a team looking for playoff depth.

    2. Doubt we can trade him, unless a playoff bound team is hurting for winger depth and experience at the dealine.

    3. absolutely 100% agree letting these bums walk

    4. I think I would let Girgensons stay and try to rid oursleves of Larrson.  To think that there was a rumor a few years agho that Chiacgo offered Patrick Sharp for Girgensons, sorry I can't remember where i saw that.

    5.  I would like to see RoR traded, he has value for sure, and I think we could get a 2nd pairing d-man and a prospect.  I can't remember the game, it was after New Years when Eichel was tearing it up, we had won, Eichel was on the bench fist bumping every player as they headed to the tunnel, RoR completely ignored him, could be nothing, but maybe there is something to them being co-capts and RoR was a b!tch about that in Colorado so...

    6. Sure, he's a fine 5-6-7 D-man with some upside

  5. Not sure where to put this, but I guess here is as good as anywhere.  San Antonio, not a major sports town, has 1 team in the 4 major sports leagues, compared to Buffalo having 2 for example.  This year is the first season since 1999 that the Spurs won't win 50 games.  Not a losing season, mind you.  Not missing the playoffs. Just not winning at least 50 out of 82 games.  Their last losing season was 1997.

    This got me to thinking.

Why do some of the other "minor" sports towns, similar in circumstance to Buffalo as far as number of major sports teams, become successful or stay successful for so long?  I think the key is good, responsible, motivated ownership.  I get the feeling that Buffalo fans are "just happy to be there" most of the time, therefore too content and not inclined to make waves.  Teams still sell out and we're still die hard fans when many other fan bases would have given up long ago.  There's little to no incentive for ownership to improve the product, either on the field/ice or atmosphere wise.  Fans have a say in sports, there's just often an unwillingness to call ownership's bluff and show the appropriate displeasure with an inferior product and/or ownership effort.

That is an incredible stat for the Spurs.

Agree with the bolded, we have had to worry about the Sabres, when the league took the team over, the future wasn't certain.  We got nervous about the Bills and if Bon Jovi was going to move them.

I know that my friend has had a difficult time selling season tickets for games he couldnt go to the past two years and he has lost a lot of money and is not going to renew for next year.  I hope a lot of people dont renew their tickets and send a message that losing and last place finishes 3 ouf last 5 years is unacceptable.  I do not want to see fans throwing Jersey's on the ice Oilers style, but, fans do need to make it very well known that something needs to be done.

  6.

    Sabres’ lines:

    Rodrigues-Eichel-Pominville

    Wilson-O’Reilly-Reinhart

    Nylander-Mittelstadt-Okposo

    Nolan-Larsson-Baptiste

    Porter, Pouliot extra

    Sabres’ defense:

    Scandella-Ristolainen

    Guhle-Nelson

    Beaulieu-Falk

    Gorges-Tennyson

I think I would prefer Baptiste and Okposo switched

  7. The draft is on June 22. I would expect their to be movement the week leading up to it (18-21) and on draft day. The Sabres should be in play considering they suck. There are only 5 UFA's or something like that so it makes sense that other players under contract will be moved to fix this mess.

Here is the article in the Athletic that Lebrun wrote. https://theathletic.com/298928/2018/04/03/lebrun-sabres-feel-the-urgency-to-turn-things-around-next-season/It is paid for content however.

There was a time I thought that RoR, Risto, Reinhart, McCabe, Eichel (of course) were pretty much untouchable.  With the exception of Eichel, anyone should be in play to try and shake up this mess we have.

  8. Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, I didnt read it, but it fits for the next season thread.

Pierre LeBrun retweeted a TSN Insider tweet, part of it said,  "Sabres taking calls on a core player".  Normally I wouldn't think much of a rumor like that, but coming from LeBrun and TSN, it holds a lot of water with me.  Could be a draft day deal or sooner?

  9. Playoff wins aren't everything. They're about to jettison a franchise player for no reason. That team has nothing going for it. Their owner actively hates the fans. I wouldn't trade places with a Sens fan. Would you?

I see your point, however, I would trade the last decade for sure and all that playoff fun.  there are some parallels, they might be letting him go or maybe not, there's no way to know for sure yet.  We also let some franchise talent walk in 2007, I realize that this GM isnt at fault, but it still was the Sabres org.

The Sens future is depressingly bleak at this point. The Sabres at the very least have an owner willing to spend money. Hopefully he's learned lessons about handing the checkbook to idiots. Time will tell.

True, our owner is willing to spend, hike up ticket prices every year, and still have a garbage product on the ice.  I am having doubts of Terry as an effective owner.

  10. I feel bad for Sens fans. Their team is woefully mismanaged. Far worse than anything we've experienced over the last ten years.

Um, the Sabres have had 5 playoff wins and no series wins since 2008, the Senators have had 23 playoff wins, and took the Pens to 7 games in the conference finals.  I don't think you can say "far worse than anything we've expereinced over the last ten years"

  11.

    @AdamSchefter
Patriots are trading WR Brandin Cooks and a fourth-round pick to LA Rams for the 23rd overall pick in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft and a sixth-round pick, league sources told ESPN.

    @AllbrightNFL
Just got a text about the Patriots and interest in Josh Rosen... whew.

I think this is the Patriot way of freaking the Bills and Dolphins out that the Patriots are going to try and move up and draft Rosen.  I highly doubt they do this, they will have to make several more trades to keep moving up.  Are they really going to give up that much draft capital and lose out of numerous other impactful rookies when Brady could still play 2 more years?  I think this is a smokescreen to get the Bills to way overpay to move up in the draft.  They are likely positioning themselves for Rudolph who probably play well in McDaniels system.

  12. There are numerous things you can like about how they finished the season, IMO, the #1 is that Reinhart seems to have figured it out.  I know, I know, many here are worried its just Stafford disease, time will tell, I am hoping it's not an anamoly and he can continue his play next year right out of the gate.

Eichel will likely continue to be a PPG player, maybe slightly above if we can get him a winger or two that can keep up with him.

Worried that Okposo will never be the same, he did play well just prior to his injury, but, are injuries going to continue to be a problem with him?

Defense is still a massive ?  Unless we land Dahlin, we will be weak yet again.  Poor Ullmark and whoever else are between the pipes.

Playoffs, no way, there isnt going to be any Avs style turn around.

  13. Anyone who isn't a hardcore gamer or doesn't work in the industry probably has no idea.

But if you want to do some reading, I suggest with just giving Gamergate a Google.

I am not trying to start a fight with you, and I know what it is, I'm just failing to understand the connection to the book/movie with it along with Trumpism and the alt-right.  Some douchebags harrassed female game designers (horrible, i am not knocking that) but the actions of a few have now ruined any and all games, movie/shows related to games?

  14. I will probably watch Ready Player One if it's ever on Netflix some day, but I think I'm going to have a hard time enjoying it given that the books have not aged well in the wake of Gamergate and the revelations that have come about regarding the misogyny and gatekeeping of the nerd/gamer community. There are too many intersections between the vile male gaming culture, the alt-right, Trumpism, etc., for me to get past.

Uh, I'm at a loss, and have no clue what you are talking about.  Gamergate? Vile male gaming culture?

  15. I went and watched "Ready Player One" this weekend.  For someone who has read the book three times, I was worried that I wouldn't like the film, however, it was incredibly fun to watch.  I knew going into it to temper my expectations that the movie would be just like the book and just let myself enjoy it.

The whole group I went with has read the book and none of us were disappointed.  It is kid friendly as well, I can only remember one F-bomb and it was hilarious when it was used, I wont spoil why it was funny in case you are planning to see it.

  16. I don't see a better 3rd line C than him on the team or in AHL. You can see the hands and once he quits thinking and just playing, he'll be ok. Attempts to play defense also. 3rd line looks like more of a scoring line than I remember in quite awhile. Okposo's 1 goal was caused by not only him going to the net but Casey finding a hole in the D. He appears to be a difference maker, you don't send that down.

I agree completely.  he doesn't have a whole lot to work on skill wise.

a lot of Sabre fans, not just here, are worried about his size and strength.  He has a whole off season to train with a professional staff, call it 6 months to put on muscle.  The average person can put on .5-1 lbs of muscle a month, Casey, being a natural athelete with a professional staff could put on 2-lbs per month.  There's no reason to think that he can't come to training camp and pre-season with 10-12 lbs of extra muscle, he'll be stronger and more explosive.

  17. This is what bugs me about fans, but especially Canadian fans... and ESPECIALLY Leaf fans.  I give full credit to Canadians for being passionate about hockey.  It's their culture.  But along with that credit I expect them to be more polished and refined in their critiques and not such blatant homers.  Demonstrate that you understand the game and respect the players.  You can root for your team but don't be stupid.

I suppose I give the Canadian hockey fans too much credit (I don't mean the ones who root for the team in Montreal).  Leaf fans who participated in what you are referring to are complete idiots.

    Eichel - 63GP, 25G, 37A, 62 points

    Matthews - 59GP, 31G, 26A, 57 points

They are completely comparable.  The fact that Eichel accounts for such a massive part of the Sabres offense only shows the level of improvement needed elsewhere in the lineup by Buffalo.

It is a great rivalry to watch.  Perhaps because the Sabres are in the basement the Leaf fans don't give it an overall respect, but they should.  Their team keeps losing to the Sabres.

I don't like Kadri... but I don't want any player getting injured like that.

I saw another interesting stat regarding Eichel vs Matthews, in Eichel's career against Matthews and the Leafs, he has 1.37 PPG, and Matthews has .66 PPG, clearly Matthews is far superior.  It is what it is, both guys are going to be great players over their careers, and i look forward to a playoff series between them.

  18. Series win over Toronto!

This is the must-est win of must win games.

Come on Jack, make Austin your bi-ootch for another game.

I follow a Penguins blogger on Twitter because he actually knows hockey and isn't just a homer.  He gave Eichel some kudo's the other night saying that Eichel and Matthews are equally elite and the Sabres-Leafs rivalry will be incredible to watch for over a decade.  The Leafs fans murdered him about making the comparison.  Numeorus Loaf fans said, Eichel is good but Matthews is elite and far better.  Just shake my head.

Hopefully they beat the Loafs again.

  19. I would hate to see Casey rushed into a top 6 role he isn't ready for. If they do, they will ruin him.

I also think we need to reinforce a culture that says you EARN the spot, you don't just get given it cause you're the great hope. Everything I've heard from him makes me think he thinks it's all going to come easy. Same maturity issues as Eichel. We make them think they're god's gifts and then we wonder why they lack a work ethic. Unless he is absolutely brilliant in camp, I'd start him in Rochester for sure.

I can agree, but, if he is to play in Buffalo next year, what would be better for him, top 6 minutes with Eichel, RoR, KO, Reino or 'sheltered minutes' with Girgensons, or whatever trash we have on the 3-4 lines?  He has a better chance to develop playing top 6 minutes with our best forwards
