Duncan Keith is 6 years older than Patrick Kane, which is about the same age difference between Eichel and this year's draft class.

Chicago was able to build a championship team with a significant age difference between their star players.  Why shouldn't Buffalo try to do the same.

Well, we did have Eric Staal last season. Brian Gionta was here a few years ago.

Who did you have in mind? Reggie Dunlop?

I get the point you're making, and while I agree this list isn't really all that accurate/useful. There are plenty of guys drafted after 13 that hit. It's not as simple as saying this 13 = those 13s, or 13s historically are lottery tickets.

So it's not entirely triskaidekaphobia. Or is it? I mean, Dan Marino wore 13 and never won a Super Bowl.

What?  The goal is to keep UPL and Tokarski in the AHL next season.  Seeing them in Buffalo would not be a positive sign for the team.

You misunderstood me. I said that unless I'm mistaken, we have a long way to go before they come close to the trio I mentioned.

I think that is perfectly reasonable.  Keeping Ullmark is in some ways the status quo.  We need another quality goalie so that we hopefully aren't forced to use UPL and Tokarski to much next season.

3 goalies? Oh, man. I remember when we had 3 when they had a stellar goaltending corps back in 03-04. Miller, Biron, Noronen.

Unless I'm mistaken, we have a long way to go before we're back at that level.

  5. Traffic never ceases to amaze me.

I came across a rolling roadblock on I-81 due to construction just west of Harrisburg, PA. Traffic is dead stopped. So, I thought I would take a detour and bypass it. I got back on at the next exit. A few miles later, I see that I'm passing trucks that I passed earlier.

And my wife doesn't think I'm serious when I've mentioned surrendering my driver's license when I retire.

McDermott & Beane run a very tight ship.  Since Brandon & Berchtold were punted, there have been pretty much no leaks.  That team is no longer dysfunctional.

Pretty sure one of the things owners were adamant about when hiring Adams was that there would be no leaks.  And he's run a pretty quiet crew himself.  By design IMHO.

I was thinking the same, Taro. The fact that nothing seems to be coming out of either this revamped front office or Granato gives me a glimmer of hope that maybe they are finally figuring out how to take a page from the football side of the Pegs' house. It's been tough to give this organization the benefit of the doubt but I'm hoping that's where we're headed...maybe. The next few days are critical and time will tell.

Maybe they've finally figured out how to play poker the right way.

Highly polarizing? The subject matter was a young athlete's courageous decision to come out and to make sports history. There isn't much polarizing about it, unless you want to drag hate, prejudice and religion into it. One person decided to be ignorant, and the thread is gone — he's still posting away. Neat trick. I got suspended once for repeating a hockey opinion someone didn't like too many times.

    Whatevs.

    Ok boomer

Without being a moderator or an administrator you can't see any deleted threads even if you started the thread.  That is what that message was conveying.  Not that you'd been banned again.

That explains the Prokop thread as well. It disappeared. Given its subject matter in the title, I could see it being a highly polarizing thread - along with certain members chiming in (BTW, I did not).

Nonetheless, I was justly concerned about how my approach and reply to someone else's comment might have turned things into a train wreck. That appears to not be the case.

I used to be a harsh critic of Ralph as an owner. On the other hand I credit him for the way he handled his estate that led to the Bills remaining in western NY. And because of that I do not criticize him while he RIP.  In the end his balance sheet is more good than bad. Very often a story-line is not necessarily black and white. You may not be aware that here are also shades of gray in the box of crayons.

Let's not forget that the team wasn't sold to a man who led the USFL into a Pyrrhic victory against the NFL.

It only took me until I was 51 but I am finally VERY interested in history. I have been watching a lot on PBS recently on the Victorian Age with railroads and Royal Navy. Now that I have the bug, I would love to start off with some all encompassing American history books. I have A LOT to brush up on so any suggestions that cover periods of time from 1700s - 1940s would be welcomed.

If you read anything about American history, make sure you take Howard Zinn's material with a HUGE grain of salt. He does not hide his bias by any means. Also, I think you're smart enough to avoid hagiographies. And, depending on who you ask, Doris Kearns Goodwin is either a top-notch presidential historian or a "court historian" - the latter being a derisive term for someone who is paid by their ruler to shill for them (like Granma is for the Cuban Communist Party).

I read about this yesterday.  I have a feeling that he wrote his dissertation in the same way that many celebrities "wrote" their autobiographies, but who knows for sure...

It's not the first time something like this has happened in Russia. Have you ever heard of Aleksandr Karelin?

  12. I looked the other day about that previous thread, and was notified that I did not have permission to view that thread - in spite of the fact that I had already commented on it and had received notifications about my post.

So I wondered, Did I do something to get under people's skins on that thread? That was clearly not my intent. I mean, I couldn't read responses. Then I looked on my own profile to see if I had been assessed any warning points over it. Nope, not a one.

I commanded a basic training battalion , and we had a few Sikh trainees who graduated and became Soldiers.  They were all generally good and kept their nose down and grinder it out, just like everyone else.

    Anecdotal, but my experience.

Apparently, some of the crusty old time veterans don't believe that the services should make accommodations for them. I tried to explain to one of those keyboard warriors on a YouTube video why the Kesh is so essential to their religion, but he wouldn't listen.

    Bump ...

    Hajj is underway in Arabia.

It is a very strange Hajj again this year.  Only 60,000 fully vaccinated citizens, or residents, allowed to complete the Hajj.

Eid ul Adha (Festival of the Sacrifice) will start at sunset on Monday and mark the end of Hajj.

The Islamic New Year (1443) will be about 3 weeks after Eid starts.

You only ever show up when politics or this stuff come up and I always find your takes to be, pretty questionable. I didn't even cover the "pass gone awry" or the implication that a coach isn't in a position of power with someone once they are an adult.

What does being a gay hockey player have to do with any of this?

Good catch. I wondered why he put his two cents in on this thread.

As for someone saying that this could be a Penn State redux, all I have to say is, "Ugh. Not again."
