Late to the thread and I'm sure to say nothing new but this was a statement game. The 5 on 3 aside, the refs in the third were definitely homers. UPL gets better every game. It's great that scoring can come from anywhere in any given game.

The increase in their confidence was notable at the beginning of the second; as if they shed their "respect" for Boston and decided they were an equally competent team.

On the Boston feed one of the talking heads said maybe toward the end of the first if the Sabres could learn to play defense they'd be scary good. I think this is the wrong take - I think it's not so much learning to play defense as it is gaining more experience.

    Great game!

It was the right take at the time. After the second, they were talking about how the Sabres HAD learned to play defense… How the Sabres were taking away all of the time and space the B’s were accustomed to having this year.

Everyone likes to crap on Dan as a play by play but I watched the Boston feed and it sounded like 300 one word sentences. McAvoy. Puck. Pass. Tuch. Pass. Steal. Offside. Marchand. Etc. Incredibly slow and lacking description. I think we have it pretty good.

The belly laughs were annoying.  I get they were doing it when something awesome (whether it was a Bruin or Sabre making the play), but it was too much… They definitely like Dahlin’s game.

True.  And, for the 1st time since Eichel has been here, the Sabres will truly have lines that follow the traditional 1st - 4th lines.  Having a bottom 6 that leaves something to be desired is OK when you have a real 1st & 2nd line.

Now trade Miller for a LHD & get someone to be the 1B goalie & we're in business.

Would still like Kahun back, but don't expect it as he's on the 4th line by ice time with this lineup unless Olofsson has a total sophomore slump & both Cozens & Thompson can't step by by mid-season.

I don’t know if he’s salvageable, but Middelstadt, Cozens, and Thompson kinda reminds me of a Roy, Vanek and Max type 3rd line from 15 years ago. Lots of skill playing protected minutes...  Top 2 lines look better than the 05-06 top 6 (Brierre/Connelly, pomminvile, and Dumont; Drury, Hecht, and Grier)... The 4th line seems stronger too, though I can’t remember who played with Mair atm...  The current defense seems far better than the 05-06 roster, too.

Goalie is the weakness with this team.

    4!  Waaaaay too outnumbered.  LOL.

Were the 2 midgets at least close enough that they were on the same team every other year, or did you just get them together the last/2nd last year possible.

Was amazed at how much easier stuff was once the Midgets were both together.

Good to see you back. 🍺

The midgets are twins...  they have been on the same team most years, but not all.  One was most skilled and the other was toward the bottom skill size when they were.  The best part of midgets is that one of them landed a girlfriend with a license (they’ll be 16 next April) who likes taking them to practices. 😆

But if the only reason for trading the goalie is to get something for them before the expansion draft, they could always hold onto them until the trade deadline, or trade them before the draft, they don't have to make the move now if they don't get what they want.

There were other goalies that would make sense for the Sabres that were available , Its not like Ullmark has proven he can be a #1 goalie on his own and him being a 1B of a tandem isn't a bad thing.

Ullmark’s inability to hug a post is just maddening.

There are still at least 2 teams looking to trade a goalie that would be an upgrade to Hutton out of town.  The Sabres are rumored to be talking to 1 of them about a goalie & the other about other players, so both could be the source of the upgrade we're looking for.

Thanks, Taro!  I miss being able to spend time on here...  I have 4 kids (2 midgets, a squirt and a mite) playing. Between them and work, about all I get is what is covered on WGR when I’m driving...  which ain’t nearly as often as it used to be.

    A Knightrider sighting.  Cool.

But, remember, better than expected does not mean good. ?

I’ve got 4 kids on 3 different teams at this point.   But if they are actually good, there might even be mini Knightriders that might join. That was impressive.

And no, I did not go so far as to say he was good.  ?

And IIRC, 2 of the Sens debacle games came with Miller out with a broken thumb.  How confident would we have felt in the Peg had Hutton just gone on IR with Ullmark NEEDING to step up?

Yep.  1st segment of the season they were on a playoff pace.  And that was with the D still very unsettled.  Once Miller was back & Tallinder/Lydman stopped playing like a 3rd pairing and instead like a top in the league pairing, things started to take off.

And we didn't know that Ruff was going to ride Miller as hard as he did heading into the season.  He'd been great in Ra-cha-cha but his previous outings in the NHL were nothing to write home about.

Yep, although I don’t think we were terribly confident about Marty in December. However, they team clicked with him filling in.

Man it feels good to be excited about the Sabres again!

Well, 2 years was self imposed.  It should've been more like 5-6.

And I do expect this current team to be good longer than that.  10 years would be awesome.  But even with breaks working against them, they should be in the mix for about 8.

Thing is, that difference in ages (from '06 to today) is why right now I am not quite sold on these guys yet. They don't feel like that squad (though if they can sustain this & come out of the next 9 5-4-0 or better, the standings will say they are).  They NEED that early goaltending to finally get going, and the '05-'06 squad could dominate to a point they didn't always need Miller to stand on his head.   Though they did take a step back w/ Miller's thumb injury, that team had come out of the gate well & was building off where they were previously.  This squad is following some historically bad hockey & without the goaltending upgrade would still only be middling.

But their D pairings (hopefully) will have more similarities to that '06 squad that was just fair to start the season but was running a veteran Finn & a nearly Norris quality D-man at the end of the year along with some NA toughness into pretty much the best top 6 D (when healthy) of the entire league.

They definitely don't feel like the '86 Habs (a youth dominated squad that ran the table) at present, but watching the joy on their faces in these games MAYBE  there's a BIT of the '80-'81 Eulers.  A VERY young & talented team that rode some very good goaltending to a stunning 1st round upset before being vanquished afterputting a scareinto the eventual SC champions.  Those Eulers were still quite a ways away, but '81 was their coming out party & showed they were agood NHL squad.

But regardless, they're fun to watch & the 3rd period confidence is contagious.

That 05-06 team got hammered by the Senators at about this point in November. TB, the jets, or the Wild should have been that game. This team has much more upside.  Lol, I looked it up. It was 11/12/05.

  10. Wasn't it previously a judgement call?  I like it the way it is now.  Make the players be more aware of what their doing.

In regards to other penalties, the only major change I really want to see is refs actually calling interference.

    This.

At first glance, I was thinking there is no need to change the rules...  just enforce them.  By swallowing the whistles. they are still influencing the game...  and it isn't in a good way.

Maybe I've been watching too many squirt and peewee playoff games, but I find the them a whole lot more entertaining than the NHL playoffs this year.

  11.

These guys are starting to remind of the Nolan team of 96/97.

I tend to think 95-96 is more what the target is... Absolutely no fun to play against, but still not winning very often. Maybe that's my target.

Regardless, my 9 year olds absolutely love watching the GEM line. Given that I am in Boston (one of their squirt teammates grandfather played for the Bruins back in the 60s), I'm glad to see a little light at the end of the tunnel.
