Savoie has slowly become the only “untouchable” non NHL prospect this year. Kulich’s playoffs were lackluster as was Rosen. Östlund and Wahlberg are still raw.

If Savoie actually wins the WHL title with his team he’d become the first Sabres prospect to actually win their youth league championship in quite some time. So effectively he isn’t available for a rental or 3rd liner

Komarov won a Memorial Cup last May.

It’s just a funny distinction I wanted to raise because as of now, I’d rather have Jack’s career than Connor’s. We’ll see on the oilers this year tho

    Interesting thought.

You hear players say all of the time they would trade personal awards for a Cup. You won’t find any person who would trade McJesus for Eichel yet Jack has something Connor may never get.

The Cup is worth a lot of votes as well when the time comes to determine who joins the HHOF.

    McDavid is still generational.

He might value long term success as much as I/we do: I’m not inside his head. Seems like it’s plausible. But he doesn’t value a playoff berth in and of itself as highly as I do: I think that’s clear

Both in terms of product value outright, and also strategically in terms of it’s usefulness as an almost alchemical tool in building future success

    I get this.

Make the playoffs even if you need to move a young asset and keep building on the success of being a playoff team.

    Make the playoffs.

Won a cup as the best player in the entire playoffs, so, the ideal player to draft “lol”

Figured you would come to his defence.

I don’t think I have taken any shots at his skills. He’s a very good player on a good team.
I might pile on when people comment about his Huh! interview and the stuff about the loudest he’s ever heard, blah blah blah. He wasn’t my favourite Sabre when he was here because of the Masshole vibes.

Anyway, I was mainly taking a shot at the term generational which almost every top draft pick seems to get tagged with.

If the GM could add a couple of Greenway type players, I would be happy. Greenway is a big player who plays a heavy and strong style of game. He doesn't get bumped off the puck or pushed out of position, and he gives us strong net presence when in the offensive zone. There is nothing flashy about his game. But he is the type of player that we need more of. I'm not overemphasizing size as I'm emphasizing style of play. Benson is far from being one of our biggest players but without question he is one of our grittier players. We need more of them.

    UFAs.
Gritty 4th line wingers that won’t break the bank:

Martinook, Clutterbuck, Carrier, Blais and of course the other Cousins.

On RHD there is Tanev, Pesce, Roy, DeMelo, Hakanpaa and MacDermid( mainly for muscle).

Zadorov is also a physical presence, although LHD.

Vladar could be traded for cheaply as a backup goalie who could be pushed down by Levi. Calgary probably wants Wolf full time, nothing more he can do in the AHL.

Cap is the issue here so it’s a moot point.

I think there is cap space this year for a few UFAs like Stephenson, Joshua and a gritty F and D.

When Peterka, Quinn and Byram are due a raise, decisions need to be made who stays or goes.

That was the year.  The one that got away.

    That was a good team.

Perreault and Martin still in their prime.

Gare, Derek Smith, Van Boxmeer and Schoenfeld entering theirs.

Gritty, grizzled vets Luce, Ramsay, Dudley, Korab and Hajt.

Young guys Seiling, McKegney having an impact.

Playfair and Ruff bringing some western toughness.

Edwards and Sauve were young but an excellent tandem.

The infusion of Olympians Ramsey and McClanahan.

And of course the coaching genius of Scotty Bowman.

    That's my worry.

I would like to see him outperform Krebs in camp but get sent down for seasoning and to improve his 200’ game.
I’m talking about the 4C role here not the 3C that KA wants to hand to Krebs.

Another year and then one of Savoie, Kulich, Östlund or Wahlberg forces their way into the lineup. Savoie, Rosen and Kulich could all get looks during the season as the injuries hit.

Okposo is prolly having the time of his life right now.

Going deep into the playoffs, without having any pressure to contribute, provide leadership and deal with the media.

On the road without your wife and kids.

    Could be worse.

    JJP - TT - Tuch

    Quinn - Stephenson - Cozens

    Benson - Jost - Greenway

    Clutterbuck - Krebs - Maroon

    Dahlin - Byram

    Power - OEL

    Joker - Clifton

    UPL - Samsonov

Stephenson would be an excellent pick up but I leave Cozens at C and have them compete for 2C.

Clutterbuck has some of what they need.

Sorry but Jost is 13F on a weak team.
Maroon has grit but is slower than Okposo.

OEL has none of the Panther grit and is a LHD.

Samsonov has the Leafs scent on him.

Joshua as a UFA would bump Greenway down to the 4th line. Benson, Cozens and Joshua. He can also play C to help Cozens on draws.

Tanev is a veteran RHD that is a UFA. He would provide the toughness in a pairing with Clark Kent.

I could blame the Sabres for a lot of things but moving on From Even Rodrigues is not one of them. He is a hard tryer but never has been a high output scorer. His best season was in Pittsburgh were he scored 43 points in 82 games. That did enough to get him a decent contract with Florida. He is just a cog in the Panther line up. I don't think we would have wanted to wait the 7 or 8 NHL seasons for him to get to where he is today. There are a lot of guys like him. To me he is an older Peyton Krebs.

    Agree.

He’s become decent but he’s not the bottom six type the Sabres need. He’s definitely the opposite of the Panthers identity. Reinhart is not gritty but he doesn’t back down and has way more skill.

Okposo looks slow and struggles to bring any playoff intensity to that lineup.

He's got some soft hands, can be physical, and skates pretty good. I think with his size and those tools, others see shades of Chara. I don't but I've seen that tossed out.

My issue is the production isn't there. It wasn't there in the MHL when he had only 8pts in 41 games and this year he had 11pts in 63 khl games. I mean, Novikov produced more in the MHL and is just below that pace in the khl (he was a yr older). That to me doesn't scream top 5 pick.

Ik he's a defender, I get that. He closes plays down in his end well and will ride you into the boards because he can. But the NHL is based on quick breakouts, getting the puck up ice and either producing offense on the rush, or using the rush to get setup and cycle. Can Silayev contribute to that and if he can, how come at lower levels there's no production? He'll be an NHL defender, but are we talking first pair, second pair, or even third pair? Do you gamble on him or just take Dickinson who's 2nd pair or better?

You’re raising red flags with me on this guy.

A top 5 draft pick should be able to score in the MHL. I know he was a year younger but that league is full of 16-20 year olds and he should have put up better numbers.

The KHL numbers are understandable as those coaches barely play U20 guys.

After watching the ROC game last night (admittedly a small sample size) if anyone other than Johnson and Levi are on the Sabres next year the team is in for a long season. No one else looks ready to make the jump. The Amerks should be fun to watch though.

Add Savoie and Komarov to the Amerks. Doesn’t raise their grit level but they bring skill.

I have a deep fear about Power and this isn't helping.

Yeah, he didn’t need to crush the guy, just bump him off of the puck.

In his defense, it was the other guy’s man, but Power had no one else to cover and could have easily killed the play.

He needs to watch some playoff hockey to see how physical play ramps up even more than the 80% regular season.

Decent game from GB. Liam Kirk is a star - hope he makes the transition to Utah. Byram was good, Cozens and Power didn’t really stand out. Bunting is arse. Slashing players all game, then looks like he’s been shot when O’Connor laid the shoulder into him.

There was a guy from your Clan team on GB
