First time out on the kayak for the season.

Was targeting walleyes primarily, but end up with a very mixed bag.

On the water at legal daylight. barey got the 2nd rod set when the first rod fired.  Had regular action for about 90 minutes or so and then the bite just died.

All told I took home 2 walleyes and a 10” perch, but also caught half a dozen smallmouth bass and 4 channel cats.  For a short time it Seemed like everything wanted to take a swipe at the crankbaits I was towing.

I think I paddled about 4 miles today.  That’s plenty for my first outing of the season.  I’m good and tired.

And hopefully back at it again tomorrow AM.

Sounds like a great day, exercise too.

I’m not much of a fisherman.
Got spoiled growing up near lakes where you could only go in by snowmobile in the winter or ATV in the summer. Almost no work on the water to get a shore lunch and then fill your limit for the ride out.

We had tons of fly in outfitters around to access the even better lakes. My uncle was good friends with one of them and once in a while he had to go pick up a group but no one to backfill the cabin. He would call my uncle and say if he could round up 4-5 guys we could go in for 2-3 days (next booking) and all we had to do was pay his fuel. Worked out to like $100 each for awesome fishing and being the only humans within 100 miles.

Anyway, just a long winded story to say that I cannot spend more than 15 minutes fishing nowadays if there is no action. Spoiled.

That and the fact that I was addicted to golf for 20 years limited the fishing.

It's character. Some guys want it, some are indifferent, or maybe just don't want it as much. Not willing to pay the price. Playoff games are harder, faster, more physical, more intense, and some players just don't want to give that extra effort as much as others.

I think you can predict some of it by watching how they play in big games and at key moments but you are right in that size and skill don't always follow through.

My father in law used to have an interesting take on playoff performance.

He said that guys who have a mercenary mindset fade away at that time of year. The players don’t get paid as their salary has been paid out during the regular season. The financial reward from the league for winning a Cup is small change compared to their salaries.

Those kind of guys do well in the 80% part of the season but may not want to give 100% for two more months.

These guys are usually pretty good. You will need to scroll down to get to the top 32 ratings but another different and interesting list.

Lindstrom at 13 and Levshunov at 14 is the lowest I’ve seen those guys. I would take either at 11.

The concerns with Lindstrom are playmaking and durability. Levshunov didn’t impress these guys with an elite skill to separate himself from the pack.

Enjoy the Austria game? A literal buzzer beater GWG for Austria.

Sorry I messed up my earlier response.

Yeah the Finnish fans were devastated . They got so hammered in the beer gardens after that one. That was a crazy game. Austri’s best showing so far.

Epic collapse. Binnington only had 20 shots. The D was porous as well.

The Austria fans partied outside afterwards, beating drums and singing songs. Some of them followed me on the subway, drums and all. They kept on singing.

Wearing a Canada jersey got me some funny looks from locals too. Their eyes were saying ‘so much for this hockey power’.

The most fun was in the fan zone, outside, between games. Huge beer garden and every country was represented. Poles, Ukrainians, Finns, Swedes, Norwegians and Czechs wanted to pose with us.

I was approached by a Finnish fan who wanted to trade jerseys. He had a nice white one but I declined because my Iginla is signed by Jarome.

Next time I will bring one I am willing to trade and get a cool international keepsake.

Pretty sure I walked by a bunch of wives and girlfriends at the airport today. There were some Hockey Canada officials there with about 8 beautiful girls.

On my way home now. I would love to do this again, maybe Scandinavia.

Average guy wins 50% of draws. ROR wins 55%.  Game is on the line.

The takeaway is only ROR cares in that situation and he'll win nearly every time because he's that much better than the average guy who somehow manages to win 50 out of 100 draws, as opposed to ROR's 55 out of 100.

I feel like this is the same kind of logic that keeps casinos in business.

When our best guy is not even 50% the odds are even worse.

So here's some info on Dakota Joshua:

    - Pretty cool name.

    - C, 6'3", 206 lbs.

    - Only 2 full NHL seasons, and he he turns 28 tomorrow.  Drafted in the 5th round in 2014 by Toronto.  Played 4 seasons at Ohio State, then part-time in the AHL for 3 seasons, then 2 seasons with Vancouver.

    - Played 11 min per game last year for the Canucks and 14:23 per game for them this year, with 18-14-32 in 63 games.

    - 60 PIM per year for the last 2 years.  5 fights last year and 4 this year.

He seems like a 4th-liner, but at the right price I'm interested.

Vancouver has moved him around the line up, some stints into the top 6 and PP.

I think he could definitely help. He hasn’t played much C at the NHL level but he has won more than 50% of his draws. He’s a winger but could take some draws if he was used properly.

Austria with five unanswered goals in the 3rd to tie it up? Against Canada?

It was shocking to all of the fans, including the Austrians.

They were celebrating outside with drums and songs. They kept it going on the subway.

I was bummed that Canada played that poorly and that Binnington couldn’t stop a beach ball but it was a cool atmosphere.

This is low-key an interesting question about the roster next year IMHO.

JJP, Quinn and Tuch are locks for 3 of the top 4 winger spots.  Who will be the 4th?  Skinner?  Benson?  Greenway?  A FA or trade FNG?  A hastily promoted rookie?  A deservedly promoted rookie?

If KA can find a good 3C then Lindy could put Skinner on that line to achieve the balance I am talking about. Greenway could round out that line and provide corner work and a net front presence while Skinner buzzes around. Benson moves up in my scenario, unless KA adds a winger like Joshua, who would push Benson down to 3rd line and Greenway to the 4th line.

I'm curious but what/who do people think we can get for this 11th pick? Which team(s) do you think have what we need and would want this pick in exchange?

A team who had Cup dreams and are done may be interested.

Pittsburgh or Washington come to mind. Washington will probably let Ovie pursue Gretzky but undergo a rebuild at the same time.

Crosby still has game but he needs to realize the others are almost done.

There are probably a few teams that will do rebuild on the fly. LA is another team.

I’m not sure what players will be made available.

I also think some teams would want other pieces added to #11 like a prospect who is almost ready. #11 on its own probably doesn’t get a solid 2-3C like Cirelli but might be enough to get Laughton.

McDavid has probably played the game better than anyone ever. Not relatively (Gretzky) but just in terms of raw performance and aptitude

He might be the best skater ever. Someone might come around and have better speed, edge work etc… but he can do so much at top speed.

The old argument about best of an era will always be there but like all sports today’s athletes are better. Higher, faster, stronger.

I like to think about dropping, Orr, Lemieux, Howe and Gretzky in today’s game having access to training, equipment, technology, nutrition, medical and psychological support that McDavid has.
