Girgensons is more valuable than folks give him credit for. More often then not he wins those races to the puck on dump-ins and then muscles his opponent out for control.
Girgensons is a fantastic bottom six forward, and personally he can stay in Buffalo as long as he would like. I wouldn't be upset at the same time if he wanted a fresh start elsewhere. But, as long as he wants to suit up here, I'm all for it. He's a soldier who fits a role and fights hard.

Interesting that they get a 3rd for Portillo and only a 7th for Asplund, an actual NHL player.
Portillo is an excellent prospect, with LA needing depth at the position. Asplund felt like Buffalo was sending him somewhere where he could play routinely. After he got passed by Jost and Krebs.

Atlanta does not deserve another team. Quebec should easily receive a team before Atlanta. Houston is fine, by me.

Don’t be so sure.
Well it's what needs to happen. We need to improve the PK. You're telling me an expiring Nick Bonino will cost more than a 5th. Additionally, I'd still look for upgrades if they're out there.

Use the pick to do something tomorrow or Friday. Riley Stillman cannot be the only addition.

Really good value for Ekholm. They could turn around and flip Barrie; if they wanted. Not bad for an over 30 year player on a high AAV lengthy term contract. Ekholm has bounced back in the last 20 games though for sure.

I would have loved to have been the team brokering the trade ala Arizona; but to say this is shocking is about as interesting staring at white washed walls.

Guys who could make sense:
Jensen, RHD (Washington)
Bonino, C (San Jose)
Any goalie with a pulse *har har*

I've watched Stillman play and he is Fitz. The advanced stats and the eye test match. To me using an asset, any asset, to acquire him is a waste. I don't care about whether or not Bloom makes it, but considering he lost a year of development to COVID, then fought through injuries and has blossomed since being traded, made we want to see him develop further.
From a general sense, I don't mind moving on from a few forward prospects to help the defense, but I actually wanted someone to help the defense get better now or in the future. Stillman does neither of those things.
If you have never seen him play, you'll understand as soon as you do. @dudacek who has watched him often with the Nucks out in Van feels the same way about Stillman the player.
As I've said previously, hopefully, this is a precursor to an actual upgrade.
Here is a really nice write-up on Bloom. https://thehockeynews.com/news/the-sabres-have-a-hidden-gem-in-josh-bloom Bloom is an excellent skater, a developing scorer, and the Sabres must have believed in him because they signed him last year even though they didn't need to.
Vancouver is my other team, I watch nearly every game. He's been one of the worst defensemen on a team full of deplorable defensemen. It's a meh move. Hopefully they use him in the right fits, to add physicality, but don't ask him to do more than that. I agree 100% on the comparison to Fitzgerald, I think he's a downgrade on Fitzgerald.

If it's something like Comrie and a 4th I'm fine with that.

Bryson is always 1 injury away from playing. So this is a helpful move PLUS the trade deadline is Friday.
we don’t know what other moves are going to comei feel the same. Thought they could have gotten Karlsson for Bloom
I don't think the world of Bloom, but at the same time, you can find someone like Stillman off waivers. He's a physical stay at home defensemen who can drop the gloves. He's a late 90's early 2000's defensemen which offers nothing more. Sarcasm aside, it's still a meh move.

This is what you want though? A guy who has no real substantial upside? He's meh, completely underwhelming. Regardless if you like Bloom or not. This is just about as blah a return as possible.
-
Tonight's game will show a lot towards whether or not they will be pushing for a playoff spot. I see a lot of upside in the offensive side of the game, but they still have to be better away from the puck and I agree w/ what a lot of people are saying we could use an upgrade at 3C/4C. Someone who plays a more thorough two way game. Think Cizikas but not as ancient.

Fixed that for you. You don't trade 19yr old former firsts for mediocre depth defenders. A 3rd might even be close to an overpayment.
He's also mediocre at hockey. Maybe he would look better in Buffalo but at best this upgrades the 4th line.
Completely fair on Murphy for a 3rd. You're probably right.
12 hours ago, tom webster said:I’m just talking fourth line, penalty killer. The only way they upgrade top 9 at this point is with a huge swing which I think we both see as unlikely at this point.
You can find functional players from Rochester for that. Rousek, screams "Give me a shot".

Rosen and a 3rd for Connor Murphy. This is something that makes sense for the Sabres, signed for one more year, we give up a tradeable asset in Rosen and a middle pick for an upgrade on this defense core.

NOT a rumor, but Lance wonders on twitter about Sam Lafferty, who it seemed like the Hawks were showcasing tonight by matching him up against the Matthews line all night. He's under contract for one more year, brings a lot of sandpaper to his game, and he was in Pitt when Karmanos was there. Interesting idea.
Wow, let's trade for an overperforming middle six forward on a terrible team. I'm so not giving up assets for a player like Sam Lafferty. That's a waiver claim type move. I just don't get giving up any sort of tangible assets for him. He's a solid nhl regular, but he's a marginal upgrade over Jost/Asplund at best. Pass, so easily.

I'd be okay with giving up Rosen in the right trade.

Congrats, what I loved coming into this season was that Cozens was out to prove that he had more to show offensively, and he's just done that. Since the World Championships, he's been a possessed human being. He's a hockey rink rat, and just wants to get better. He's the best forward entering the zone/carrying the puck and our best face off centermen. He's physical and responsible. This is a GREAT deal for the Sabres and for Cozens, to know he's here and part of the core long term. Congrats to Dylan!

18 goals, 23 assists for 41 points. I think that's about what I'd expect. Which is a pretty good first season.
-
Like the player don't feel it moves the needle too much of a ton. Again, I really think it's about adding another competent defender, and maybe a strong two way center for depth.

Sabres defensemen who made the All-Star team:
- Alexei Zhitnik
- Mike Ramsey
- Jim Schoenfeld
- Jerry Korab
- Phil Housley
- Brian Campbell
- Rasmus Dahlin (2022)
In 2011 there were no Sabres on either team.
Zemgus Girgensons was an All-Star in 2015, Okposo (w/ Buffalo) in 2017.
My message to Rasmus? Do better.
Do better? So having already surpassed his career high in points, in top 3 in points for defensemen, doesn't mean he's not doing better. Versus a rigged popularity contest?

It doesn't matter, but I don't think he actually wrote that. The english is too fluid and smooth but again, it doesn't matter. It's a nice letter.
I wonder if this is a prelude to him being signed to a long term extension and then being named captain next season.
He could have easily made the overall comments and someone wrote it for with him.

He's my favorite Sabre since Miller left. I loved Reinhart for a long time, but, Rasmus is the embodiment of what we want in Buffalo. This is the superstar player we deserve. He's a blue liner, you build from the back. This just furthers my desire to get him signed ASAP long term.

I think it's a "fair" trade, if you like Aatu Raty's upside. I'd say he's more likely as a ceiling of a 2nd round center. Beauvillier, needed a change of scenery and the 1st even though protected is still a 1st round pick.

Very nice for the team to hold the lead to a respectable total.
