  1. We've had two: Imlach and Bowman.

I remember Bowman handling both. IMO Murray is executing his vision. I am on board with what seems to be his vision. He has done a good job thus far with stockpiling picks, and assets for the future. We are on the upswing, even as bad as things seem now.

Got to this...stopped reading, as it completely described how I felt.  I think I need a break from this place, at least until I close on the house.

GL. Just sold mine in Maryland Friday, and moved back to Buffalo. Keep your head up it will be over soon....
  2. It might.  That said, if the GM doesn't care how great a coach you are anyway then it doesn't matter what the team on the ice does.

not to get sidetracked but the best calculated move Murray could make was to keep Nolan.  He knew if it was a 1 year deal Nolan would walk.  So he offers him 3.  Nolan knows he's not going far here but he's going to do everything he can to convince another team to take a shot on him.

Nolan's other option was to say no and then have no chance of coaching in the NHL.

    Done deal.

Great point. Reading your post, and really thinking about it makes sense.
  3. Nicely put.

Agreed. I can see subtle improvements in the brief time he has spent up this year. He needs to stay up the rest of the year, I think that will do him a lot of good. He has all of the intangibles to become a threat every time he is on the ice.

  4. I agree with this completely. I have been trying to give Nolan the benefit of the doubt, but today's game was the final straw in my view. Grigorenko had the least ice time of all players, even less than Matt Ellis. I don't see how 8 minutes of ice time is enough to be able to adequately evaluate Grigs. He needs more of an opportunity to show what he can do. Even if he did struggle mightily in his 8 minutes, I would venture a guess that if he was given a little bit more time, he would have a much better chance to find a groove.

There are 11 games left in a season in which all indications point to Tim Murray wanting to shoot for last place. We are dead last right now. Isn't that the time to see what you have in a high potential prospect, even if there are going to be some growing pains in Grigorenko's game?

I wonder if Murray agrees with the way Nolan is utilizing him.

My feeling as I, and others have stated; Grigs has been mishandled, and he needs to be played without fear of being benched. When TN took over and told Tyler Myers to just a his game we say a different Myers. The same needs to be done with Grig, I guarantee we will see the player that he really is.
  5. I bet they'd have problems with that; the logo was a Pepsi bottle top and I'd think Pepsi wouldn't be a big fan of that.

Right, but something along those lines, simple design that shows the cities, and teams heritage. Not that the bottle cap is that.

  6. Only way to tell for sure is watch the stats next year. I'm guessing Michtell and Flynn have the same or lower numbers. Myers and the talent gang improve. If Nolan is still here grinders will seem like heroes as they put up numbers similar to talent. That's only because Nolan botches talent! Give guys like Hogdson and Grigs a coach who coaches talent and they will flourish too. You can see that with Grigs now. Watch some ahl hockey. He is above most of the talent he plays against(and with).

I built my own backyard rink one bucket at a time just like Nolan did. I've loved and played hockey for 42 years. I've played a loooooot of hockey. I'm smart enough to know that head down grinding isn't the only way to play the game. Talent SHOULD be rewarded. Grinders do realize what they are and feel guilty when they get more toi than that other guy they know shines like a star. It affects the locker room and moral. For everyone. Could you blame Grig for a lack of effort when you aren't allowed to make plays that you see develop that your coach is too blind to see? "Head down and grind? But I just say a beautiful chance to get one in the net!" Hockey is x and o. Nolan is not.

    Very accurate post.
  7. I really don't understand this. I have no problem with Nolan's demand for gritty effort. I like it.

And I don't blame Nolan for the Sabres woes. He is a mediocre coach working with a poor roster.

    My concerns are this:

    * Too many players are underachieving under Nolan: my prime examples are Moulson, Gionta, Stewart, Hodgson — lesser examples are Benny and the Mess.

    * With the exception of Zemgus, none of our young guys are improving (Risto, Zadorov, Foligno) or being put in a position to succeed (Grigorenko, Reinhart, Larsson)

    * His player usage baffles me at times (Flynn, Meszaros, Gionta on the PP over Zadorov, Grigorenko, Hodgson? Hell it took him a half-year to try Stewart in front of the net). I see Hodgson out there against the Stamkos line. I see Mitchell out there with our goalie pulled.

    * His double standards are obvious. He rewards plumbers like Flynn and Mitchell for "effort" while ignoring their (lack of) results. It's a sin if you sit back and watch a play develop, but it's OK to be not good enough, just as long as you "compete."

    * In the same vein, he sticks with veterans (Meszaros, Moulson) no matter how poorly they play and benches kids (Grigorenko, Larsson, Zadorov) at their first error.

    * We've been outshot drastically virtually every single game and have shown no signs of adjusting our style. Ted's message is simply work harder.

Any one of these things can be justified in isolation, but overall it's a troubling picture.

I think Ted is a one-dimensional coach who can only relate to one kind of player. If we give him Hasek in goal and a team of Girgensons, he could challenge for the cup.

But I don't think we are rebuilding on that template.

We need a coach who is going to take our young core and maximize their potential.

From what I've seen of Teddy this year, his is not the formula for making it happen and he has shown no signs of adapting his style.

I think you hit the issue right on the head (no pun intended).

  8. I love how Lindy was placed on a pedestal for over a decade and people criticized the players for not being good enough.

Then when the team is a steaming pile of garbage for a roster suddenly we're ready to blame coaching.

I don't think anyone would ever compare Nolan, to Lindy. As much as I love Lindy Ruff, and believe he is a great coach. It was time for a change after all those years.
  9. Can you share the site?  I don't remember Grigorenko ever getting a fair shake.

Can you also link an article where it was reported that he rubbed the vets the wrong way?

He never has. TN loves the Larrson (sp), and Ellis type players. While they are vital to a fourth line, Grigroenko has way more upside then they do. Just IMO. I am tired of Nolan's mismanagement of the p!@ poor team that has been assembled.

I am not taking anything off the shoulders of Grigorenko, but as I have seen Zemgus grow so to did I hope to see Grigorenko.  Occasional call ups and 4th line minutes will not see him grow.  10 games will not see him grow.  I would prefer they not recall him at all and make him come in next year with fire in his belly.  Constant demotion does not help him as much as he does not help himself.

This has been his story, That kids confidence has to be shattered at this point.

  10. I know that Mike Weber isn't viewed by many people on this board as being important at all, but I had the opportunity to see the Sabres/Caps game from the DC area and listened to the local announcers. The color guy for the Caps said that Mike Weber is a cheap player and disliked around the league by a lot of other players.

I just never really took Weber that way, as a cheap player more than anyone else. Does he really have that rep? or is it just the Caps color guy making up something to have something to say?

I don't look at Weber in that light at all. He seems like a stand up guy, and can never remember him ever taking cheap shots on other players.
  11. I'm not sure which Grigorenko you guys are watching, but I respectfully disagree on both counts.

He has value, no matter what anyone thinks.

He just needs the right coaching and teammates, as most any athlete does.

    This

  12. It really is unfortunate that he can't clear waivers next year. He may make the team, but it would be ideal to have options. As is he has to be gifted a spot even if he doesn't earn it or traded. Without his situation being so horrible mishandled I think we'd all be pretty excited about him.

He seemed to be running around a little in his first few shifts, lost a few battles down low,  then wasn't on the ice much until I think mid second period.  He seemed to play a lot better towards the end of the game.

  13. All of the tank , and previous lack of effort talk aside. Why is the kid not playing this year? He had a pretty good camp, and nice numbers in Roch.  I think he has payed his dues and deserves a spot over some of the other call ups. What say you?

  14. Am I the only person who thinks Tyler Ennis' game has improved leaps and bounds over what it was.  He seems so much more creative and engaging in plays. The more offensive pressure put on him the more he responds with creativity and good plays.  Am I wrong or has Ennis taken a large step forward?

He has definitley improved every year. Imagine how good he will be with legitimate line mates. He is trying to do everything on his own right now.

This I'd agree with.  I noticed it in last night's "game".  He wasn't afraid of taking a hit, in order to make the play.

He has been throwing hits as well, more this year than any. He is playing angry.
