  1.

My opinion is that he'll compete for a spot in camp, based solely on his play in the regular season. In comparison, Pysyk for example, did not look half as comfortable as Chad. Chad was loose, no nerves, & made smart, safe, NHL plays. But that's my opinion-- I'm not going out of my way to "correct" people who feel otherwise as if it's written in stone that Ruhwedel will never play another NHL game. I'm just curious what about him turns you off so much that you're willing to label him as a scrub 7 games into his professional career, because even if it is only 7 games, all I saw were good things.

Well I personally feel if Chad had shown anything the Sabres might not have gone 2 defensemen with their first 2 picks knowing that they have a hard time scoring. Again he was nothing more than an injury stop gap.

  2. I don't know about that. He's a rookie who jumped into the fray and outperformed the vast majority of the Sabres defense. Very small sample size, sure, but it does say something for someone to be able to go directly from college to the NHL without really losing a step. I just don't see what you have against him to label him as a depth d-man with a low ceiling after a very limited window to watch him play. Did you follow him in college? Did he have a bad reputation? All I have to base my judgement on is the handful of games he played with the team, which he played very well in.

I'm not saying he's an immediate top pair can't-miss guy, but just don't see why you feel so strongly that him making the team is out of the question. I guess i'm just optimistic until he shows me a reason not to be.

Put the shoe on the other foot. With such a small sample size, why do you feel so strongly that he will make the team?

  3. Yep. And not pleasantly. Rudy is the kind of player that only gets a spot on bad teams. He's Porter/Flynn/Ellis/McCormick on defense. I'd rather they throw McNabb to the wolves and see if he makes it out ok than see Rudy in the lineup.

Absolutely, Rudy was nothing more than a stop gap.

  4. I'm not sure either of them qualify as "goal scoring forwards." Grigorenko probably has a good case but Larsson is more of a two-way guy, no?

So Ruhwedel absolutely cannot unseat any of those guys, but Pysyk, McNabb, and two journeyman AHL-talent d-men are locked-in above him on the depth chart? Lol.

On an unrelated note, I'm not completely upset about the Sekera/McBain trade but it kind of seems odd that Buffalo was so close to acquiring #5 & McBain for Sekera & #8, but since that didn't work, they trade the same player to the same team for their same player and #35.

Sure he could, but an undrafted free agent that played 7 NHL games has a low percant of doing that imo.

What did he show you that screams he could unseat any of the current guys? He was a desperate injury fill in, nothing more.

  5. We have a 33 year old Miller on his way out of town, and a bunch of so-so prospects (Enroth, Hackett, Makarov, Ullmark).

Really, so so prospects? I get it, you think nobody can ever be as good or better than Miller, whatever!

  6. Valid point on MAG, I suppose. I have no rebuttal other than that Ruhwedel impressed me. I think he competes for a starting role.

Thank you for your input, "drunken idiot."

Ruhwedel is a 7th dman maybe or 2 way contract at best next year. He doesn't unseat Weber, Myers, Ehrhoff, Pysyk, Mcbain, McNabb or Sulzer/Pardy if one or both of them are resigned. Or either one of the new guys, I forgot about them.

  7. How do you come to that conclusion on Ruhwedel? IMO he was our best defensemen since the day he joined the team. Hard to imagine he doesn't push for a spot in camp, looked much better than Pysyk to me.

    no

  8. if you take every sabres D under contract/have rights to i feel sure there are 6 names at the top of the list. This isnt about what you or anyone thinks a players role is (top pair, top 4, etc). If there was a game today. The 6 d that would play for the sabres... One needs to go and i think it will happen

Whatever! you have Ehrhoff, Myers, Sekera, Weber, then you fill the other 2 spots with either Ruhwedel, Mcnabb, or Pysyk. Who are you trading or even thinking of trading?

Do you not see that as being a rather week d corps? I do!

  9. i am not looking at 1 versus 2way deals. Im talking straight depth chart ranking. I think 1 of the top 6 is gone and possible one under 24 gets added to a deal

but there is no top 6 right now on the big club, there is only 4 of them.

  10. Think this means we trading at least a roster D and maybe a prospect one too

Doubt it. If you look, they only have 4 guys on the roster Ehrhoff, Myers, Sekera, Weber.

Ruhwedel, and Pysyk are on 2 ways and Pardy and Sulzer are ufa.

McNabb is on the farm but who else?

  11. There is no need to "try" at all.

Hodgson is a one dimensional player that when he is not scoring, which is often. brings nothing else to the rink. Kassian being a physical player that brings more to rink will, over time, mature into the big physical winger the Sabre fans have always begged for. Hodgson is a lot like Drew Stafford as I have said. Three or four years from now Hodgson will look pretty the same as he is now.

Nah, don't agree at all. They are both young with good skills and huge upside, Cody has more upside IMHO. I didn't like the trade at first because I liked what Zack brought, but now I think it was a steal for Buffalo.

  12. Hows everyone liking the second half thus far? I enjoyed the reprieve from the Governor story-line last week, it was starting to wear on me a bit.

same thought here. don't much care for the governor or the woodville story line.

  13. I have this feeling in my gut that Darcy is a weasel. Maybe you think I'm in left field, but there are a few things banging around in my head that just don't help me think otherwise. Such as:

    - Building the current lineup and selling the "expectation of making the playoffs." As the reality of what he's assembled now is revealed, Ruff becomes the sacrificial lamb at the expense of Darcy's heartless, mentally fragile roster.

    - Giving Ruff mediocrity to work with year after year and holding onto "his" guys beyond their useful life. And adjusting way late to the size and toughness required come playoff time.

    - Dismantling the leadership core of this team (Drury, Briere, McKee), then pouring salt on the wound by botching Vanek (leaving him exposed to an offer sheet) and Roy (allowing him to go to arbitration to ultimately be overpaid). All the while, we're lead to believe he didn't have "the resources" (i.e., ownership with deep pockets) to prevent it.

    - Offering Ted Nolan the one year contract when he became the GM. Say what you will about Nolan, but he had the balz to tell Darcy where to put that embarrassment of a contract offer.

I can't help but think what a mess he's created now, and yet he remains unscathed.

I really think that most of mental issues can be solely blamed on Ruff and nothing else. Seems as though he has the ability to mentally break down a player but does not have the ability to get them right again. Poor quality if you ask me.

  14. The wife said shane was going to kill rick and I had a feeling this would go down like this with shane underestimating rick because of ricks quick thinking in the bar scene. Glad to see him done. Interesting factoid revealed about how zombies don't necessarily have to be bit to be infected and become Zombies. This changes everything. Next week should be epic.

I think there was "zombie blood/juice" still on the handcuffs and Ricks knife. So when that kid made himself bleed, he infected himself. Also when Rick gutted Shane, i'm assuming the knife Rick used was also infected from killing walkers and inturn infected Shane.

  15. Perhaps you need to appreciate the difference between "bashing" Kassian vs. simply not buying into the myth. Some of us see him for what he is: a young kid with enormous potential as an offensive player who can handle himself with his fists if needed. Like you, we all read the scouting reports and were hoping to see the next Neely in the making immediately. But as is the case with the vast majority of prospects that takes time to develop. It's not fair to the kid to expect that immediately and I was certainly more than willing to wait. But then a funny thing happened: we had an opportunity to acquire a higher rated prospect at a greater position of need.

If there is one glaring area of need that's even bigger than the one of grit and toughness, it's scoring. We are simply not very good at it. Scoring and getting leads will negate our disadvantage in the toughness department more than anything else. The Boston's of the league cannot leverage their physical advantage as readily when forced to play from behind very often. Plus, I think we're nicely positioned to make some deals for players that can help us get bigger and stronger in the summer. Yesterday was a start in reshaping the roster. It wasn't all going to be done overnight. And while it's easy to say that they should have started the process in December, I don't think it's that simple. Besides, it does no good to rant about missed opportunities that we don't know for sure existed in the first place.

Bottom line: it took a great prospect with potential to land another great prospect with potential. And we all wish Kassian the best with his new opportunity.

    GO SABRES!!!

i agree with almost all of this, but has anybody ever thought that the lack of toughness/grit is a huge contributor to the reason the sabres don't score?

when was the last time you saw any of the top 6 taking huge hits to make a play? i couldn't tell you the last time i seen it. i do see alot of bending over and reaching with the stick or peeling of the puck because a checker is coming in hot and heavy and ultimately the sabre player loses the puck.

i fear now teams will have their way with buffalo, the next boston game is going to be ugly i predict. what is going to stop team from being like that towards them? buffalo has no answer for that.

  16. GoDD, both Gaustad and Kassian were on THIS team THIS year. Where was this toughness ? Where was this grittiness? Where was the leadership that these two exhibited? I never saw it. You can't lose something you never had in the first place. If Kassian was the kind of player we wish he was he would have made damn sure he went after any Bruin, didn't even have to be Lucic. in any game he was in the line up against them. We didn't get that from him and I do not believe that Ruff was stifling his physical ability. Kassian just doesn't have it.

whew, am i glad the sabres don't count on you for advice.

  17. Not really, he struggled a lot in the AHL last year and had fans questioning if he'd ever be a top 2 center. Now a lot of fans thought he was their future captain, and at worst, was going to be a go-to scorer as Sedin ages.

kind of like what kassian has gone through this year, his first year. but you had already written off kassian after 25 games as not "being the answer to lucic". whatever

  18. what amazes me is the negative critiques of kassian after 1/2 half of a season on 2 different teams for 2 different coachs. apparently because he hasn't gotten into 25 fights, scored 25 goals, gotten 25 assists, have 100 body checks/hits and doesn't play 20+ minutes per night and kill penalties, all before he just turned 21, he is NEVER going to develop and he is what he is SOFT. you people have got to be kidding me, what the hell do you expect from a rookie only half way into his first season. it's amazing how fans want him to act and perform as a 10 year seasoned veteran at 20 years old and when he doesn't and needs experience, cut him loose he is never going to be any good. REALLY!
