Annual expectations thread 2023/24: #28 Zemgus Girgensons
bob_sauve28 replied to dudacek's topic in The Aud Club
Ten years ago this week, in a building that no longer exists, Zemgus Girgensons was a 19-year-old basking in his NHL debut with the Buffalo Sabres. Reminded by reporters after practice Tuesday, Girgensons smiled and said he had seen the anniversary pop up on his Twitter feed the night before. It was Oct. 2, 2013, at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena in a game most remembered as the Red Wings’ return to the Eastern Conference. In skill, intensity and even emojis, Dylan Cozens packs a punch in middle for Sabres Cozens tweaked the Leafs on social media and made a different statement on the ice Saturday vs. Columbus. The Sabres lost, 2-1, but Girgensons scored Buffalo’s only goal with 7:24 left, putting his first NHL shot on goal into the net after a misplay by Wings goalie Jimmy Howard. “I remember vividly. The building’s not around but I’m never gonna forget that,” said Girgensons, whose linemates that night were Brian Flynn and Mikhail Grigorenko. “It was a cool experience. I definitely remember my first shift I got pinned in my zone with (Detroit stars Pavel) Datsyuk and (Henrik) Zetterberg on the ice. It was over a minute long I think. Remember that the most, but in the end, I got a goal so that was special of course.” -

Nice to see VO up there 🙂

Ya, we will be trading some forwards in not too distant future if that's true. Gees, a wealth of talent!

Is Savoie near Benson level? Or is he more with Kulich, Rosen and Ă–stlund?

Did Davies clear waivers?

Let's give it a try. It might work. Joki has been playing well

Well, since I already have Benson pegged as the next Kucherov, I'll take Benson

We need to talk about Zach Benson making the team this year, 2023

Winning, ya. But the question of properly managing a very important asset is important too. If he is ready of course he should stay up the whole season. If not, he shouldn’t -

Interesting. Shouldn’t read into things, but I’d guess Biro, Benson, Johnson and Stillman are being rewarded or given a good look over at least. Be crazy if Biro moves ahead of Kulich and Rosen. He’s older I think. Question: If Benson stays and plays off and on for half a season, could he then be sent to Rochester around New Years? -

What have we learned from training camp so far?

Sure, I wouldn't want to play a seven game series with those de-men, but nice to know if we go down a few defenseman we have competent fill ins. -

We have a lot more defensive depth than we imagined. Our 7-12 defense played pretty well against the regular Pens forwards. That’s impressive.
