  1. I think it's because Campbell only has 2 years left on his contract while Ehrhoff has 7. Personally I'd prefer to keep Ehrhoff unless we can get a top 10 pick or 1st line prospect in a deal for him. I'd be fine with bringing in Campbell to help reach the cap floor too until some of our younger players develop.

I would move Ehrhoff for Campbell in a larger swap for the 1st overall 2014. At least that cap hit would offset some of the cost, but not as much as I'd like as Florida has cap space. Would be an interesting discussion on such a deal though.

It's a distinct possibility. It actually surprises me that the Canadian teams are on there. There's no way we're a better option than Edmonton are we? Or Winnipeg?

It makes you wonder what possible clout GMTM holds across the league.

    i concur.

And I agree with your statement on TM not going after Spezza. I think he does have a great deal of respect for him. I do wonder will Spezza will end up, another great twist to this off season.

  2. I think GMTM probably respects Spezza too much to even bother trying to acquire him. He knows Jason wouldn't want to come here.

It is rather funny that most of the bottom tier teams are on that list, except Buffalo. You think TM's presence as GM here has something to do with that?

  3. Haha you realize your list is the same as his, right? I think the top five are clear: Ekblad, Reinhart, Dal Colle, Draisaitl, Bennett. The next two could be from a large pile: Ehlers, Tuch, Virtanen, Nylander, Ritchie, Perlini, and even guys like Barbashev, Fiala, McCann and Fleury could be in there.

Yea, I just copied and pasted it then highlighted the 2 I'd like to see the Sabres get this draft.

I was leaning Bennett, and used to state such, what changed my mind was reading up on Reinhart's hockey sense and ice vision. Seems to be a clear playmaker there and something that could really help our snipers pot the puck in the net. Of course, those snipers have to position themselves to do so :)

Ehlers on the other hand, I just recently caught some video of him, love the kids speed, just love it. Speed kills, as they say.

Murray's comments about moving back up into the 1st round, I'm so hoping he'd also like to get that speed on the roster in the future.

  4. Kim Pegula is the stronger tie to the WNY. Having been born and raised here unlike her husband, Terry, who fell in love with the French Connection and the Sabres.

I have no doubts about the future of the Sabres, Bills (should they purchase them) and the Rochester Americans.

  5. So any guesses as to who Tim Murray's magnificent seven are?

He said he wouldn't trade down below seven.

I say Reinhart, Ekblad, Bennett, Draisaitl, Ehlers, Dal Colle and Nylander.

I say Reinhart, Ekblad, Bennett, Draisaitl, Ehlers, Dal Colle and Nylander.

Yes please to the 2 in red.

  6. Don't tell Sabres Fan in NS that, his head will swell up. :)

(he's ahead of the curve partially because Ehlers places for his local QMJHL team, and he's a giant homer! :) :))

lol, ah, ok. Still, that kid does show some amazing speed, at least in his highlight video's I watched.

  7. Just caught some video of this prospect named Ehlers. I forget who does the drive-by postings in threads on Ehlers, I have to say, I'm on board. I'd like Buffalo to trade back up into the top 10 and get him, he seems like the perfect player to bring into this organization. Here is the link where I saw the video of him.

    http://www.mynhldraft.com/2014/NHL-Draft-Profiles/Nikolaj-Ehlers

He is quick, reminds me of a Briere/Afino cross breed with work ethic.

Who ever the poster is that was on this guy from the get go, way to stay ahead of the curve here.

  8. Hagel is getting owned by Forbes in the house cmte hearings right now.

No assessment of risk to US lives if these detainees rejoin the fight and we have to back after them? WTF? That is complete incompetents on the part of both the President, who is the Commander and Chief and his immediate subordinates. How the hell do you not take that into consideration and attempt to plan ahead?

And not that I disagree with prisoner exchanges during war, because others have rightly pointed out, prisoner exchanges are a part of history, but to do no homework on post exchange release risk is just straight out dumb.

  9. Not only that...if you think you are pulling the wool over someone....it works great. Look what Bledsoe did to the Bills!

Myers in Toronto would be perfect.

I'd like to see Buffalo leak out that they are leaning Ekblad.

Use it as leverage with an Edmonton deal. I'd like Yak, but they'd probably dangle Eberle. Not sure though. Wouldn't be opposed to a 2nd overall and Ehrhoff for 3rd overall and Eberle. But, like I said, I'd prefer Yakopuv.

  10. IMHO communities in the Rust Belt have to get beyond this rose-colored view. Sure, things were more prosperous and more people lived in places like Buffalo and Bradford, PA. So what? It's the past. It's gone. People here will openly tell you how great the oil boom times were. Yep, they remember living in the late 1800s and early 1900s. People were packed onto Main St. shoulder to shoulder five deep! Yep, and there were saloons, ###### houses and shoot outs during Prohibition too. Every time I see (edit: old photos of…) our gorgeous hillsides, which now draw tourists and hikers, stripped bare and dotted with oil derricks, I think "good riddance." (Of course there's still a huge polluting refinery in the middle of the valley and oil and gas drilling are ongoing, including limited fracking.)

Well, the title of the thread is "The Economics of Buffalo". With that said, the past of this region is directly tied to it's future, whether individuals choose to accept that or not, it makes it no less of a reality. We have the highest cancer rates in the nation, and that's directly tied to our past. We have petro-chemical brownfield sites all over the place, and that's directly tied to our past. We haven't updated our skilled labor force to any extent at all and I'll counter that with the exodus still continues to happen, albeit to a lesser extent (hey, so many already left, the numbers were bound to tail off eventually).

But the most important aspect of it all is what is left here. New York state mandates, a state government that sends roughly 65% of it's resources to the great 3 county region surrounding the mouth of the Hudson River. We have ineffective representatives from the WNY region not always because they are just plain morons, but because the region has been largely passed and no longer holds it's significance as it once did as the gateway from the great lakes or the electrical center of the world. More recently, the purge of industry from the area was never truly replaced. Oh sure we can open a thousand mom and pop small companies, but the truth is they will never amass the wealth needed to but more than a minor ding in the mess that was left here.

Looking at through rose-colored glasses? I don't think I am, just calling it as it is.

But hey, even though I can admit the truth to these realities, I live here. But the thread isn't so much on the small beauty's left here, it's on The Economics of Buffalo.

  11. Can someone please explain the Ullmark and Makarov love to me? I can somewhat get Ullmark, but his results have thus far come from a very different league. Makarov I just don't get. He spent most of the year in the ECHL and then got 15 AHL starts. He had mediocre numbers in each league. Nothing about this kid right now screams NHL regular. If he's going to get this praise, I don't see why someone would want to say the same about Lieuwen, since they are more or less at the same exact stages in their careers, separated by two years in age.

Simple for me, I've watched a good deal of Ullmark via streams with friends from Sweden.

Smooth reflexes, focused on not only the puck but the field of play overall, anticipating with a good deal of success the play.

Makarov I've had a chance to catch in action as well.

Raw talent, great drive and motivation to perform and it shows in more than just a few games here and there. Still needs to work on his ability to read the play in front of him but has natural skill sets as a net minder. Needs much polishing but isn't a long shot project, more longer term.

  12. Thank you Numark for the listing.

My personal opinion is Armia needs another year or more in the A. But will make the NHL.

Ullmark and Makarov look to be the real deals early on, I project them both in the NHL.

Grig's I'm not so high on, flip a coin on whether or not he makes it.

Risto, Zad's, McCabe and Pysyk definitely stick in my mind.

Baptiste, hmmmmm, I love what he did for his own stock these past 9 months or so, but I don't want to give myself false hope. Abstaining for now until I see more of the same in the form of consistency at his level of play.

The same with Possler, Compher and Fasching.

Larsson I see as a 3/4 liner, but I just don't see him sticking in the NHL, just an opinion of mine is all. More of a Luke Adam type.

The rest I'll need more information, abstain.

  13. There are obviously going to be changes made to this roster before the start of next season. I have no idea what the free agency plan is or if they might make any draft day trades. I thought I'd try to guess the opening night roster for next season. I know I'm going to be way off, but here goes nothing:

    Forwards

Hodgson- Girgensons- Stafford ( Really hope he gets traded and we sign Callahan or some other free agent)

    Ennis- Reinhardt or Bennett- Stewart

    Foligno- Flynn- Conacher

No clue on 4th line (hopefully doesn't include John Scott)

    Defense:

Ehrhoff, Myers, Ristolainen, Pysyk, Weber, Zadorov

I realize the line combinations will be much different, but I tried to predict which forwards might be on the team.

I don't believe any of the youngsters see much NHL time, and certainly not our 2nd overall pick this draft.

It'll be a full on tank for McDavid.

  14. Raise your hand if you thought the Rangers would be this good in the playoffs.

Lundqvist is playing exceptional. But the one thing I notice about the Rangers is their top 2 lines apply some nice pressure in the offensive zone. The trade for St. Louis has paid off in spades.

But, and there is always a but, they haven't faced off in a series with an opponent the western conference has to offer. Chicago and LA are extremely well rounded rosters.

  15. Thanks  I'm ashamed to admit it was a 15 minute MSPaint hack job.

The words combined with the visual delivery of the core make it all happen ;)

If Stafford does this we can sell him at the deadline ( again a captains trade)

@Leino: Do you really think he will be here next year?

I can't see them moving Ville or buying him out. That cap hit is needed I would think. Also, who is going to step in as tank commander?

You have left out one very important factor here, a certain winger will be entering a contract year. I fulling expect the 16 goals he scored last season to jump up into the 30's this year.

Not to mention the Leino Factor. Is there much doubt that Leino will have a huge bounce back year scoring 20-25 goals? Not enough to push this team into the playoffs, just enough to ruin everyone's hopes and dreams.

Can't see Stafford doing much of anything with what little talent he has around him. Remember, in his 30 goal season, he scored what, 4 hat tricks, and with Vanek and Pommers still here during that time, he wasn't getting top end coverage on him. That's changed.

Ville, as I stated, isn't changing anything in my opinion. He needs a game changer to play decent (Briere when he was with the Flyers). Ville isn't one to make things happen himself, he is a product of those around him, I don't see the Sabres bringing a player in to change that.

  16. What I'm saying is we are the least skilled roster in the Nhl. We are all but guaranteed last place. Teams can lose their 2 best players to season ending injuries and still ice a better roster then us. Even teams intentionally tanking will still be ahead of us. We sold everyone of value. I don't understand how people here think we won't finish last

This is very true. We have 0 offensive zone sustainability. It's actually priceless with the up coming 15 draft. I, for one, am totally impressed with the timing of this tank. It appears as though we might have a shot at building a contender.

  17. I'll never understand why so many people say "first overall" when they mean "first round".

On a side note, I love that avatar. That one should be housed in the Sabrespace hall of fame. Just an outstanding job.

Really living up to your user-name huh?

    :P

See, I told you all I'm a glass half full kind a guy
