  1. because take away the greatest goalie ever and nolan coaches his teams to top 3 draft picks what was the worst lindy drafted without the greatest goalie ever? 5?

I submit to you without Drury/Briere the same happens.

I am not sure there is anyone to overcome this culture. To watch Nolan after only 3 games make those comments on the team....then the past 2 games.....something is seriously rotten.

I like Murray. I don't think it is as simple as he will have a bunch of picks and bring "his" coach in. I also think that if ownership/management is a cluster-f....Murray doesn't have the personal patience to stay long. He knows for his professional well-being he has to smile and tapdance, but at a certain point, he probably would be willing to go back being an assistant in a good organization.

I'd be a little nervous about the Bills purchase as well. They are a shiny new toy for the family, and he just spent 8x the amount on it than he did the Sabres. It's easy for Pegula to say, "wake me up when we draft all those great, elite players and we are good again."

While I don't disagree with you Ghost, I will say we've seen this before, on a lesser scale. The mid 80's. And I agree with your assessment on the time line. I've been saying since last year prepare to eat 5 years of bad hockey.

The only saving grace is this, talent is there in the pipe line and with the youth in the line up now. How those players view the culture of Buffalo hockey is indeed the key. I'm wagering it improves, but I still don't like the fact TM himself was stating he didn't think a rebuild need take 5 years, 2 to 3 wasn't out of the realm of reason. That bothers me, he obviously didn't do his home work before accepting the job then spoke to something he can't give in the process. Is GM TM the right man for the job? I don't believe he is, in so far as the culture is concerned..............that will take more time.

  2. I will give you the no 99 scf. However, that team was not being outplayed game in and game out like the Nolan teams did. to even remotely compare Drury/Briere to Dom borders on stupidity. Drury and Briere where replaceable players Dom was one of a kind.

I say tomato you say tomato i say no that was a apple

Why can't I replace them? Was the run toward the Cup not nearly equal in length? Was the outcome not the same? Based on Lindy having such an extended tenure here I believe it common sense that the 99 scenario led in to the bankruptcy and subsequent 2 years following the lock out whereby Ruff benefited greatly not from coaching style, but from talent. That should be more than obvious I would have thought.

  3. take dom off the nolan teams and you have last place teams, no coach of the year award, and no longing to right the wrong of nolanpasts. I said last season if nolan wants to be succesful he better bring in some good assistants that can coach and put some systems in place...

Take Dom off the Ruff team and Drury/Briere off the Ruff team and you have no Stanley Cup run in 99 and no ECF's in 05/06, 06/07.

You say tomato I say tomato.........................

  4. Probably worse than just having to watch them.

    X.Benedict has solved the equation..........

At least Nolan gets paid for having to watch them.

Nicely played sir.....nicely played. I'd put in the hand clap video clip, but I can never seem to remember how.

    Great turn of phrase.

While I was typing it I actually thought of a question Sully might ask :)

I still think Murray will wait until the coach matters before making a decision.

    Then again, Nolan could walk.

If the season continues as is, some fans may actually make sure Nolan doesn't walk.........

If Murray wants to bring in "his guy," can anyone argue this mess of a season is a good time to do it? If the answer is no, then nolan should stay

No, and I agree, keep Nolan for the entire season. Hey, maybe he'll hit the right note on one of his motivational speech moments to the players just after Jan. and the record, while still last place, won't look so bad. Then again, maybe it's not butter...........

  5. With this most likely being his last coaching gig I doubt he quits. Probably needs the money and most likely the only reason he decided to stay.

What I can see him doing is making it impossible for GMTM NOT to fire him. Then he gets paid and he can go home and collect a check for a few years.

As for Lindy. 30 teams have a job opening. The two candidates are him and Nolan. How many hire Nolan? Yes his time here had come but to compare them as coaches is apples to oranges.

Agreed on coaching styles, disagree on outcome. Teddy did get the most out of that squad back in the 90's, of course, it helped immensely having Dom back stopping your team. As for Lindy, it helped having Dom, then didn't when he left, it helped having Drury/Briere then didn't when they left. I would surmise that skill or skill/leadership in those cases are what made the difference, not coaching styles. I believe they both had the same out come, no Stanley Cups.

And what's with the apples and oranges analogies I'm seeing in many threads these days? They are both fruit. If anything, we should be saying "it's like comparing apples and Reese's peanut butter cups" They are both delicious, but only one is recommended by physicians :P

  6. Or, after all of these delightfully funny comments, could it just be that the teams youth is only 5 games in to their first or second season and have yet to find the chemistry, combined with the veterans, what there are on this team, just mailing it in for the paychecks? Could it be..........?

And as for Tyler Myers, like the rest of the Sabres that were packing, he'll be thankful when it's his turn, and I'm guessing sooner rather than later in his mind.

So, who is at fault for this? One man, one name stands out amongst all others.................................Darcy Regier!!!!!

After all, it's still a great deal of his product in the youth you see on the ice or in the pipeline. The man who couldn't find the fax machine power switch is almost solely to blame for this mess.

TM and company (Nolan included) have a monumental task in front of them, it won't happen over night, not with the damage that was done to this organization since 2007. Money wasn't the issue after Pegula's arrival, personnel decisions were because Regier remained at the helm of a ship destined to hit the rocks time and again.

  7. The time frame is just so freakin' convenient (say it like the church lady for added effect). Who will own the team by the time the Sabres contend again?

I bit of drama there, don't you agree? No reason to seem remotely surprised by the string of events. A decision was made to tear it down and build anew after the first couple of years of throwing money at it didn't work.

As you hear my state over and over again, it must be said again, patience is what is required here. Attacks on ownership are a moot situation. We have an owner, the team is in full on rebuild in accordance with a plan set forth, now, we just have to be patient and see if Mr. Pegula's advisors and management team are up to the task and worth a grain of salt.

  8. God I hate that argument about tanking not working in Edmonton - For every Edmonton I can give you Tampa Bay, Chicago, Pittsburgh, LA. Its looking like we may have to add the NYI to the list of teams where tanking in the right years works.

It took all of the teams you list longer than 3 years to find success.

  9. I love how we've already had these exact discussions, yet, here we are...

    lol, agreed.

The rebuild is going take longer than the 2 to 3 years being touted to the fan base however. But then, the fan base, at least the die hards, have most likely witnessed what has gone on in Edmonton and Florida and even Columbus and should realize were looking at a 4 to 5 year process to even contend on a serious scale for the cup. All of what is happening really shouldn't be surprising.

  10. This thread should be pinned.

Just reviewed the Anaheim game day thread.

Are there really this many fans out there that believe we aren't shooting for one of the big 2 next draft?

Were the additions that much of an attraction for fans? And the kids, holy smokes, they are going to be on a heavy learning curve, at least, the youngsters. Did fans really expect more from Risto, Samson and a couple of other youngsters? To me, them being with the big club is just them getting their feet wet, be it 9 games or a full season.

Rochester is the key. It holds the future tools for this club, and those tools are being brought along at the pace they should be. I'm speaking of Armia, McCabe and a few others. There is no reason to panic here my fellow Sabres fans. A plan has been conceived, it's implementation is being executed as this season progresses.

For those that actually buy the line of crap about 2 to 3 seasons, news flash for you, when you break down all of the talent on a team, or what little there was of it, and replace it with youth, time is what is needed for them to mature and develop, patience is what is needed from the fan base, that combined with realistic expectations.

Look beyond what is right in front of your noses, take off the blinders, see the bigger picture. Show patience with the product that lay prostrate before us now, for it won't be like this in 2 to 3 years.

  11. I got to watch a Sabres game, YAY!

They blew it in the 3rd, BOOOOO!!!!!

Not surprising on a couple of note worthy issues.

    1. Meszaros, there is a reason he's with the Sabres and not else where, it's showing.

    2. Myers, we keep him. I like his attitude so far for this season.

    3. Zadarov, please, bring him in, it can't hurt to get him the NHL experience, even in a lost cause season.

    4. Girgs, more of him for years to come, YES PLEASE!

    5. Samson, meh, wasn't overly impressed either way, but, I advocated back to juniors, couldn't hurt if he stays.

and finally, 6. Expect the net minders to have a long season.

On a side note: Buffalo 0 - 2, NYI 2 - 0, Looks good for our pick next draft, the Islanders however are not keeping their end of the deal up. I hate being wrong, but I projected them at 4 to 10th pick over all, in those first 2 games, they looked, well, good. And that sucks for us.

  12. Foligno. He is the key to me. NHL experience, he's gritty, he's tough and he's proven he can pot the puck when given linemates to play with that can show him the refined side of the game and his role in it.

To me, the Stafford, Ennis, Foligno line is critical. But as a player, what he learns from playing LW with those players could prove critical for a scoring, power forward, fighting, 3rd line LW'er.

As for make or break time, it's Hodgson. He needs to show he can center a 2nd/3rd scoring line by upping that face off percentage, increasing play making abilities through assists and learning a defensive game that suits his purpose.

As for the future, It's all about Girgensons. I see him becoming the pillar of a center if he can control the face off dot, much like Hodgson to that end. But, more importantly, it's his attitude, his drive, his determination that seals the deal for him as the 2nd line center position. He can score, with flare, he can hit, he can control the flow of a game. This year, it's his time to shine 82 games. Let us pray he does so.
