  1. Going back over the trades since 2014 , there is only 1 that I truly hate and that's the trade that sent DESLAURIERS to MTL for REDMOND in Oct 2017

most every other trade had at least something positive to come back

trading away McNabb was a mistake but it did bring in Deslauriers, which could have been good if we kept him around   This ignores the fact that Cernak was taken with the 2nd round pick Sabres traded away     So if you assume Sabres have both Cernak and McNabb and developed them  properly, then this becomes a disaster of a trade

McNabb and Cernak for 2years of Deslauriers   👎👎👎👎

Then again what are the odds the Sabres develop them into the players they are today ?

  2. Since I don't believe in heaven or hell, i really hope OJ suffered in his battle vs cancer.
There are only a few people in this world I would wish that type of pain on.   He is one of them

    sorry if that offends.

    Corrected. Try not being soft.

Still cannot believe they gave him that contract after like 80-85 total games. Insanity. That's what bridge deals are for.

Needs a new coach in the worst way.

I'm guessing you would want to trade for Parayko to pair with him?

I think it was the March 7nd game against Vegas (a 7-2 win) that optimism for this team possibly making a run at the playoffs hit a peak.  They had just won their 5th in 6 games (wins over Carolina, Tampa, and Vegas of course), the only loss being a 1 goal loss to Florida in Florida, and they passed the .500 point percentage for the first time in a long time.

Since then, things haven't gone well.  Who exactly showed up and who didn't since then during the stretch to the playoffs, that obviously failed:

-Tage showed up. 11 goals, 20 points, +11 in 17 games (53 goal, 96 point, +53 pace projected over 82 games)

-Peterka, 9 goals in 18 games.

-Tuch, 18 points in 18 games.

    Who didn't?

    Cozens.  1 goal. 5 points.  -3. In 18 games.

I get it, he's 23.  But is risky to rely on Cozens as your #2 center next year.

Tell me about Skinners numbers over that time ?

Watching the game now and at the end of the second period. I don’t know what the final score is but since you’ve all been waiting for my qualified analysis.

OP and Dahlin play well together. OP had a good game overall. If he continues into next season I’ll happily be proven wrong.

TNT is not a number one center right now IMO. He is quickly trendy that way though. He has quietly learned how to protect the puck with his body very well. Looks increasingly difficult for defenders to separate from the puck.

Peterka is a bonafide 1W. Good hands, good speed, good offensive IQ. Doesn’t seem to be a defensive liability.

Rousek I expect will make the team next year. Nothing flashy about his game and could be a decent bottom six guy. Third liner?

When Benson learns how to finish he’s gonna be an offensive threat. No problem keeping him with Cozens. Two guys with tenacity and scoring capability.

Cozens, decent 2C, probably would make a really good 3C. He and Benson could hound a team’s first line in a defensive role with scoring potential. Maybe Rousek on the other wing?

Quinn is a 2W, no question. A veteran 2C would be good for his development and the team’s production. Slightly less refined than Peterka due to injuries/missed time. Good offensive IQ but not as confident.

Krebs is a lifetime 4C. Theoretically he, Girgs, and Greenway could bring the physical aspect with Krebs and Greenway capable of playing up as needed.

Tuch, flashes of brilliance mixed with big wide circles. Keep on the second line with Quinn and a vet 2C next year.

    Peterka Thompson TBD

    Quinn TBD Tuch

    Benson Cozens Rousek?

    Greenway Kreb Girgs

    Dahlin Power

    Byram Muel

    Clufton Johnson

    Bryson???

    UPL

    Levi

The 1RW can be an average top six guy. Doesn’t have to break the bank.

2C will cost. I bet they go with Cozens and find a 3C though. More cost effective I guess. TBH that’s probably the better scenario.

Whatever prospects survive the summer can challenge for bottom six roles. Lookout Krebs, Girgs, Rousek, and even Benson.

In total, find a top six RW and a 3C. As long as they are aren’t duds I’d be happy if they were the only moves.

Oh yeah, whole new coaching staff!

They are paying Cozens to be 2nd line centre.  If they wanted they could have kept Mitts but they traded him rather than pay.

There should be no rookie players in the opening night roster for the 2024 Sabres. Everyone stays in jrs or Rochester and those spots are filled by actual capable veteran players. So no Savoie, Kulich, Novikov, Rosen.

Say Kulich is better than Krebs ?  Don't you want the best players to open the season ?

So if we had removed Jeff skinner last season, we’d have been better?

a top goal scorer in the league last year and you are claiming him to be a sizeable! net negative. To the tune of almost single handedly turning franchises around for the worse, which we know players in the nhl don’t do (nor for the better).

something doesn’t jive. He either provided a ton of positive value last year or didn’t. There was a magical barrier stopping us from seizing one final point cause Jeff Skinner was here?

    none of it makes sense

last year? He played on the top line and was good.  This season, not so good and then dropped to the 3rd line where he has become invisible.

If the Sabres still needed a 1st line LW I would be ok with him but they dont need it and I think he has been passed by Benson on the depth chart for line 2.

So i will go back to my original post that you don't want Skinner on the 3rd line. You need to build a balanced team and he isn't a balanced player at all

last question, do you have any concern that the oldest forward on the team only plays offense? What kind of example does that set for the young players?

I know they weren't good enough with Skinner

you don't have any concern with the oldest player on your team being one-dimensional and having his effort questioned?

  9. 18 minutes ago, Broken Ankles said:

Pretty sure Rod did not coach Jeff.  He started after they traded him.  Possible he said I don’t want a floater on my team after looking at tape, but the Hurricanes made a lot of moves in an attempt to play a different style of hockey.  Laying their failure at the feet of Skinny is a bit much.  The guy can be a net negative, but his skill set is top three and last year on a poor defensive team was a +15.

@Crusader1969 In answer to your question, placing Skinner on the third line with defensively responsible players who can play a two way game could yield a lot better results than we have seen in years.  In terms of LW, I think Quinn has the highest potential with goal scoring and plays a better defensive game.  Similarly JJP is ascending so I plug him on FL2.  The third line does not have to be a no skill/checking line.  Better match ups and opportunities of possession for Skinner if facing an Islanders “identity line”.  Plus, unless the cost to extricate Jeff is low (2nd round) I would rather use picks and prospects to acquire talent and not to hope “addition by subtraction” works.  Skinner is not Diggs.

Brind'mour was an assistant coach with the Hurricanes for years before becoming the Head Coach. Just go back and read some of his qoutes about Jeff Skinner and you will see what @Perrualtforver is talking about. If you look what the Hurricanes did that off-season it was basically 2 moves - remove Skinner for nothing, trade Hanifan for Hamilton.   They then become one of the best teams in the league.  I think getting rid of Jeff Skinner was a huge part of their turnaround, along with getting a coach that wont allow players not to give their all shift in and shift out.

Im getting a pretty good sample size of Jeff Skinner on the 3rd line this season --- he gives you nothing at all.

There is no way that Skinner is the 13th forward.

He will be on line 1 or line 2.

30+ goal scorer is not any team's 13th forward.

Why isn't he on line 1 or 2 during this important stretch of games? Who are you dropping JJP or Benson?

I saw a 18 year old Benson outplay him this year, I think a 21 year old Savoie would be able to do the same

I would love to see Skinners production off of line 1 this year   I'll see if I can find it tomorrow    I'll admit I'm wrong if he's even half decent away from Thompson

Last point is that Skinner plays LW

my LW depth chart going into next season would be

    JJP
    Benson
    Greemway

so Savoie really isn't taking his spot on line 3. - Greenway is

    Savoie is taking Olofssons spot

I’m honestly not so set on hardcore line designations. A “third liner” doesn’t have to be in a specific mold. What makes Savoie a better fit in the top 12 than Skinner?

You actually think a rookie Savoie will provide more for the team than Jeff Skinner?

The dude was the toast of the town 12 months ago. He’s still 3rd in goals and the entire team has a down year and now we want to replace him with a child

And then have the gall to scream “youngest team in da league!” When we miss. Come on now

Interesting that Skinner played approx 30% of his 5v5 time with Mitts  this season putting up  20 of his 33 even strength points during this time.

seemed him and Mitts had good chemistry and may explain why skinners scoring has nose dived since around the time Mitts was traded

It’s kind of funny that after all these years “job 1” is still, apparently, moving our highest producers off the roster. The eternal cycle.

If I had a spot for him on my top 6 , I would keep him. A perfectly fine top 6 player.
as I said above -he is  the antithesis of what you want from a bottom 6 winger.

  15. 14 minutes ago, PerreaultForever said:

I don't agree with this. I personally have thought, and continue to think, that removing Skinner is the only major move we need to make aside from getting a new coach. Yes, we could use some other key players, but removing Skinner matters more. Just ask Brind'Amour if you don't believe me.

As for Benson, we over used him. He's a rookie. I see a ton of upside but he has a lot to learn. We couldn't send him to junior, that was pointless, but I think he should have only played about 2/3 of the games he did and he should have had less ice time and probably more one on one coaching. I'm hoping we get a better coach and in time Benson will become a stud.

Yep, removing Skinner should be job 1 when it comes to roster construction.

If two of the “new faces” are Kulich and Savoie I may just save my time and skip 2024/25.

Tage is a number 1.  Maybe not top 10, but top 30 in an injury riddled year.  Cozens isn’t a number two, but he is paid like one and the Mitts trade guarantees the job is his next year and Kev isn’t seeking any blockers. I’ll agree partially, that some need to be moved down but they can still do it with Tage and Cozens.  Maybe Quinn and Brady T on the first line with Tage.  Push JJP and Tuch to the second.  Get a vet  to center #3 with Skinner and Greenway.

Unfortunately, Brady T is a pipe dream.

I'm not sure a dominant playoffs makes up for how shaky he looked for most of the time  up here imo. Rolling it back for the 3rd time in a row is incredibly bad idea. Some names I know are available (could be re-signed) in Chris Driedger (SEA) 2.1 GAA/.917 save%, Cam Talbot (LAK) 2.48 GAA/.915 save%, Laurent Broissot (WPG) 2.1 GAA/.925 save%, Anthony Stolarz (FLA) 2.12 GAA/.922 save% compared to Devin levi's 3.10 GAA/.899 save%. Those guys I mentioned should not require more than a 1-2 year deal aside from maybe Driedger but even he most likely wont get a long term deal.

    Thanks.  Like the response!

Levi proving he’s too good for the AHL doesn’t prove NHL readiness just fyi

”no need” for him isn’t the same as the sabres needs, necessarily

I understand no one believed it was possible Levi wouldn’t be Patrick Roy out the gate; and no one believes it’s possible there could be a vet out there who could he better than Levi as a backup next year. I do think it’s possible to acquire a competent vet backup, but I understand Adams has no intention of doing anything other than doubling down on Levi being ready again

go through a list of every backup in the league,   How many can you say are undoubtedly better than Levi? Of those, would any be available ? I doubt there are many.   If it's about winning and Levi provides you a better chance vs guys you can bring in via trade / UFA - shouldn't you have Levi as the backup ?

I like your enthusiasm but I just don't see why Boone jenner who is the captain of the dumpster fire CBJ would want  to come to an even bigger dumpster fire in the Sabres?

I also believe Ryan Johnson has surpassed Muel on the 2nd line imo.

Levi backing up UPL is a mistake, it's time for Adams to put the big boy pants on and go get a 1-2 year stop gap goalie who can alternate with UPL but also win us some game why Levi works on his game in the AHL.

I wouldn't mind adding Savoie, Kulich and Carrier although some here have said Kulich doesn't look ready yet. Have you been watching him? What's your take on him since I don't get to watch many Rochacha games.

Let's see how Levi does in the playoffs.  If he dominates , there is no need for him to spend another year down there.  What vet could you bring in that would be better than Levi as a backup ?

    “Negated in bensons second year”

You aren’t keeping up with the argument. The discussion was more Benson-like production, at best, from Savoie, not actual Benson-next-season as the conversation was Skinner benched for Savoie

Again I would say, it's not all about points.   There is something to effort, willingness to battle. Skinner just isn't it. It's more of an indictment of skinner than anything else ... I don't think he should be on the roster any longer

No need to include “but” after that small sample size declaration. It’s just, full stop, too small a sample size to tout as any sort of argument.

A lot of what Skinner does isn’t even counted: we have to think about his penalty differential, the value he provides in the calls he draws: last I checked he’s always near the top of the league in this category.

Anyways, Benson has 9 goals this season. He didn’t contribute to winning to the extent Skinner did. Benson was good, for a rookie. You can ask any advanced stats guy on twitter and they’ll tell you the same - ask Chad haha he’ll give a better answer than me and if I’m wrong I’ll happily admit it

There is a 15 point difference between them , that's easily negated in Bensons 2nd year.
PLUS he does so much more than Skinner does than you can't record on a speadsheet.
    Let me ask you this

    1) who has a better 2 way game and is willing to back check between the 2?
    2) who is more willing to battle along the board and in front of the net?
    3) who hasn't played 1000 games in the NHL and some how not played in 1 playoff gAme?

Skinner plays the type of game that too many Sabres have played over the years

he needs to be off the team or in the press box to start next year

but that's just my opinion.   I always appreciate the back and forth dialogue with you.   Enjoy the night

In a season of disappointment, this thread easily takes the top spot as the most disappointing.  If they run any lineup out there similar to this season, I may have to stop watching.  Who has faith that any of the players listed, who have objectively failed at providing the bare minimum of success, can provide it in the future?

I don’t want to hear that a new coach fixes them.  You can’t change a tiger’s stripes.  These guys don’t have what it takes. They don’t compete, they don’t have mental toughness and they roll over at the first sign of adversity.

As I said to someone else.  You may as well close up shop now.  They aren't going to do major surgery to this team
