He did come in with Lafontaine. They were introduced at the same press conference.
I read that his contract was not being renewed, I think that was around the draft.
Lafontaine brought in Patrick to be his sounding board.
It's pretty realistic to assume Murray is in charge now and decided he didn't need or want him in that role.
As far as Ken Sawyer goes, I guess he has influence with Pegula, but I've always thought of him as a business guy. I don't usually pay attention to those types unless they are getting in the way of the hockey department.

Jack Eichel the hockey talent is scintillating. Every game, even his bad games, there's a flash.
Jack Eichel the hockey player needs more work than I thought he would. He could also use some help, which I don't think Bylsma is giving him enough of.
No, I'm not worried.
This, mostly. I love Jack Eichel. He is so talented he is going to score more than 20 goals despite the fact the game is often moving too fast for him right now. He can't do things he is used to doing and he isn't the go-to guy he is used to being. He's frustrated by it, and sometimes it shows.
It's adversity but I think he is a competitor and I think he will be better for it in the long run.
It's nobody's fault, it's just part of the learning process.
He isn't playing as well as his talent would suggest but that is OK because he is just 19.
Your Buffalo Sabres aren't winning as much as their talent would suggest, but that is OK because they are just 30 games removed from being the worst team in hockey.
And like your Buffalo Sabres, Jack Eichel will be much more than just fine.
-
I didn't see him as a junior, and I'm entirely confident in your assessment.
But I cannot see the Sabres' top 2 centers being anyone other than ROR or Eichel -- and Reino looks like he's going to be good enough so that he has to play on the top 2 lines. So I think he'll have to play wing.
I'm reasonably confident that you don't want to unload ROR or Eichel to make room for Reino.
Am I missing something?
No. One of three is likely going to move to the wing and as long as Bylsma is here, you are probably right.
But I'm not sure why it's automatically Samson.
Reinhart between Kane and Eichel might be amazing.
-
I think ROR is the #1 center until Jackie Boy becomes too much of a force of nature to remain at #2.
I think Reino stays on the wing for either ROR or Jackie Boy pretty much forever.
I think Zemgus stays at #3 center pretty much forever.
Did you get a chance to watch Sam as a junior centre?
He was so good and such a natural centre - everything you want from that position.
-
I just see talent all over this kid.
I don't really care if at 18 he isn't leading the league or even the Sabre in scoring, he's got 15 more years or so to do that.
I think he looks amazing out there.
When it all comes together for him, which it eventually will, he will be great.

O'Reilly a third-liner? On Team Canada maybe.A little out of whack though? An embarrassment of riches? Is O'Reilly merely a checking line center? He's an awesome two-way, three-zone, all-situation player, but is he more than a third liner? Is Girgensons just your energy line guy? Does DD even think in terms of that old-fashioned four-line setup? Could one of those centers be trade bait?
I'd like to see something on my desk in the morning. Thanks.
He has really changed things for me. I simply didn't expect him to be this good a centre.
I'm starting to think Girgs shine was partially a creation of Ted Nolan hockey. He still has to find himself in a mature NHL system.
I think he will and I am comfortable with him centring the third line or playing the wing.
Bylsma has not thought in traditional 4-line structures so far, but that has changed the last few games. Substitute Foligno for Moulson and the lines we saw yesterday are about as traditional as you can get.
I think once Jack and Sam get comfortable in this league whatever line they are on will score, no matter what label you put on it.
-
Dans game plan has a lot of structure which has worked wonders in improving our defensive zone coverage, breakouts, puck possession and reducing odd man rushes.
What we have not seen yet is offence.
I haven't decided if that's about the system restricting creativity, or the players not being comfortable enough in it yet to know how to push the envelope.
Eichel's play could be a case in point of the former, Reinhart's improvement an example of the latter.
Others are saying the lack of offence is about lack of talent, but I don't think so.
There are too many players with track records for offence.
I'm willing to give it time. This was always a transitional year for me anyway.

This place is quiet.
So a bit of a two-prong rant. IR stashing. I can't count the times this season I have seen a player sit on IR multiple days to a week after he is no longer listed as such. It is disingenuous and poor sportsmanship to leave a player more than one day on IR after he is cleared to played, I give the one day allowance as it might be that you miss the day for whatever reason. Yahoo poorly handles the re-integration of said IR player. The way the system should work is you drop a player from the active roster (which it does do) and then immediately move the IR player into that slot (which it doesn't do). You have to wait 24 hours to actually complete that move. If you try it before 24 hours, it gives you a roster over limit warning, which is wrong and dumb.
The 24-hour thing is annoying.
I haven't this year, but I used the IR stash to great advantage last year.
Might feel slimy, but it's in the rules.

@Freeman
I also thought McCabe and Bogo had a nice game. Bogo seems to been rounding into shape lately.
He still has those moments of over pursuit where he gets caught in no-mans land, but there have been moments where he has been utterly dominant separating man from puck on the boards.
I also like the fact Gionta is finally out of the top six and playing with Larsson and Girgs on what looks like a real hard-checking 3rd line that is showing some signs of puck possession.
I know it's hard to stay patient with the lack of wins, but the signs are there.
This is going to be a good team.
-
Fact one: if you get the puck, there's no trip, I believe. Also, upon frame by frame analysis, Gorges didn't get the puck. Kane has lost control of it himself. The trip was more of a combination of Gorges' left skate taking out Kane's right skate and Gorges pushing Kane from behind (and perhaps a bit of a dive).
I did watch it slow-mo and I thought Gorges got the puck but it was close.
I thought if you got the puck first it was no trip too, but that's not what it says in the rule book. Apparently they changed it in 2014.
Either way, it was a play you often see let go.

O'Reillly is our best player and has been our most clutch scorer.
Ennis is probably our most skilled one-on-one player, at least until Eichel comes into his own.
Each has a history of being good at the shootout; at the moment, they are probably our best choices.
Girgensons was probably the definition of a "feel" choice.
Not much to see here.
-
My memory is with yours ink, it was a ridiculous amount. It was definitely a figure to make him one of the highest paid defense-men at the time.
Well, that's what we where led to believe anyway.
Darcy had everyone believing this .
-
Fact one: Josh Gorges knocked away the puck before Patrick Kane tripped.
Fact two: Rasmus Ristolainen's high stick was caused by Panarin shrugging off the stick
Fact three: both of those instances are still technically penalties
Fact four: refs tend to let borderline fouls go late in a tight game.
Fact five: I have never seen two borderline minor penalties called at the same time creating a two man-advantage for a full two minutes with less than three minutes to go in a one-goal game, ever. Not even in Montreal.
Opinion one: Samson's pass on the O'Reilly goal was a play I can't recall another Sabre making.
Opinion two: Ryan O'Reilly is a beast
Opinion three: the best team in hockey was lucky to beat us today

This pure speculation, other than last summer's tire icking, but you can bet GMTM will kick the tires again and you can bet Stamkos will have some interest — location, facility, and ownership reputation are all things that work in our favour now.
Hockey Heaven anyone?

Johansen should fetch slightly more than O'Reilly...
Disagree. It could happen, but it shouldn't.
Johansen is a better talent, but he is nowhere near O'Reilly's focus and consistency.
O'Reilly is a better hockey player and is only two years older.
One is on team Canada's radar while the other is not for good reason.
-
I don't think we're in the position or need of Johansen then. I would love to have him, but we have a similar if not better player in ROR, and already have a ton of centers. We need some actual scoring wingers now IMO
Like Johansen, but this is basically where I am. His value is similar to Kane's, plus you would add for the fact he is a centre.
Or maybe slightly less than the price for OReilly.
In a perfect world Columbus is also definitely going to want a centre coming back.
They also already have a lot of good young players in the system, I'm not sure the usual three-youngster package gets it done.
Vancouver is the team that should be pushing hard for Ryan.
I also like the idea of blockbuster with Edmonton: Johansen for Nugent-Hopkins, with adds from both sides

Let's wait to judge our goalie situation until we need our goalies in big game situations. Whoopteedo, our goalies have mediocre stats and the team is in the bottom 1/3. Let's see if we'll miss reliable goaltending when we are working our way through the top 8 teams in the conference in 7 game series.
This.

It's been a while since I've heard of a Sabre player doing so much for the kids in such a short period of time.
-
I continue to be pleasantly surprised by Chad Johnson.
If Lehner had those numbers I'd be pointing to them as evidence Murray made a good trade and would be fully confident with him going forward. Johnsons history suggests he will regress to the mean, but his play certainly supports those who argue goalies are easy to find.
The season has a lot of time to play out, but re-signing him to a modest contract to support or supplant Lehner looks like a viable option at the moment. Lehner is still our most talented keeper and will, still get every chance to prove he is our guy.
With Ullmark showing signs, giving him a couple years in Rochester while Lehner gets his shot here, the only movement in goal I see coming in the next few years is finding another Johnson if Johnson walks as a UFA this summer.
I also wonder if Johnson's play this year will make him trade bait at the deadline for a team seeking some insurance in net.

Don't want my avatar as their primary logo, but it would be a great shoulder patch.
Yes, I've thought that too.
As well as a blue and gold goat head third.

Does Ryan still call out his teammates after games?
I didn't watch the post game, but there were plenty of WTF waves going on.
-
I watched the Canucks get shredded by the Wild the other night and it was a worse defensive performance than any delivered in the tank year. Save the win over the Sabres, the Canucks are in a bad place and have been for a few weeks.
I guess what I'm saying is I expect Miller's stats to get worse and it wont necessarily be his fault.

I really hoped GoDD was going to get over his fixation and remain. This forum has changed a lot over the years. It looks like we're moving on without him. I fear mediocre hockey is partially to blame.
Well I hope it's not mediocre posting.
GoDD was wrong to carry on his Penn State crusade after it was made abundantly clear pretty much everyone thought he had crossed the line. And his metaphors could flash from :w00t: to  in heartbeat.
But as a poster, love him or lump him, he was a star: articulate, contrary, entertaining, abrasive, informed, provocative — every one of you has paused at some point and said "I wonder what he is going to post next?"
And ultimately, this is a place of leisure; we are here because we want to be entertained.
X. — who, if he is not the most respected poster on this board, should be — called him a narcissist. I see why, but my take was more that Drane enjoyed and appreciated his audience here and he worked like a talk radio host to drive the conversation. He wasn't just sharing whatever popped into his mind, he put a lot of time into both the thought and the delivery. And whether it was the tank, the suspension, or things going on his personal life, I got the sense he felt he wasn't connecting anymore. And he started to force it.
I have no judgment on the ban; I see why it was a consideration and, as SDS says, I will never know the whole story. But I will miss his voice. Just like I miss X's.
