Gotta go with Moulson considering who he's playing with.
Well, for the record, Kane and Eichel have a combined 9 assists.
Girgensons and Gionta have 10.

I never thought of you as much of a "show me the stats" kinda guy. But here we go.
Gionta much worse than Girgensons, Kane much better than Ennis, Reinhart (who received plenty of "I haven't seen him do much" criticism early in the season) much better than Moulson.
I mean, are you honestly and truly trying to support your argument by saying Moulson has been anything other than awful this year?
As for Gorges, I don't think he's been criticized much at all, so I honestly don't know why you're bringing him up relative to Pysyk.
I'm not sure why, but recently you've seemed awfully ornery about this perception that veterans are being unfairly criticized and the kids are getting a free pass. You're framing it as A) unwarranted and B) unfair. I vehemently disagree with both of those (you may have a leg to stand on with Gionta, but in no world has his play warranted 20+ minutes and PP time), but perhaps more importantly, I don't think it's happening, and certainly not due to your "new/shiny and long term player" hypothesis as WildCard nicely refuted.
Lastly, on a purely conceptual level, is it really that out of line to be more forgiving of mistakes by rookies or second year players than those committed by guys who have been in the league for a decade?
Maybe this will better explain my orneriness
To me, the most disappointing Sabres so far are Girgensons, Eichel, Larsson, Pysyk, Moulson, Kane and Ennis.
Yet, to me, the most criticized are Gionta, Weber, Moulson, and Ennis.
The most likely to escape deserved criticism are Ullmark and Eichel and the most likely not to receive deserved praise are Gorges and Gionta.
No, I don't think it's really that's out of line to cut the kids more slack, but I do think it's wrong to pretend it's not there.
The dumping on Gionta after the offside while absolving Jack was rubbing salt in the wound.
-
I think Ullmark is better than Johnson, but he hasn't played better.
I love Pysyk. He has not, by any measure, played better than Gorges.
Gionta has had a ton of grief, more than anyone. Girgensons has had some murmurs. Not sure what measuring stick says Gionta has been much worse.
Kane's numbers and issues have been similar to Ennis. No one has started a Kane has to go thread.
Flip the goals and assists and Moulsons numbers are almost identical to St. Samson, who is apparently the second coming.
Maybe we are remembering different posts, but to me the trend is pretty obvious.

There are plenty of players on this team that are new and/or young, and they either get or don't get criticism based on their play. Same with the old people that are either new/young.
Im not sure I understand the post, but I think you are trying to say the amount of praise or criticism a player gets basically is equal to how well that player plays?
Who has received more praise this year, Gorges or Pysyk? Johnson or Ullmark?
Who has received more grief Gionta or Girgensons? Ennis or Kane?
The more likely a fan is to see a player as part of the future, the more likely that player will be cut some slack.

He would almost have to be piece in a bigger trade, wouldn't he?I think your analysis is accurate, unfortunately I don't see a market for him. Maybe closer to the trade deadline, but scouts will see what you have and know that he is a st rental.
There will be scouts that are fans. And teams where he will be a better fit.
He'll stay with the team he's traded to if he thinks he has the role he wants.
-
Seriously? I read all the offseason threads just like you did.Is it really bias to consider the 36 year old captain should have more criticism than the 19 year old rookie?
Is there a single person on this board who expected Gionta to be better than Eichel this season?
I'd say Gionta has played much closer to expectations than Jack has.

Larsson is done as a Sabre.
Ive always liked his edge and hockey sense and he looked like the player I thought he could be down the stretch last year.
I dismissed Hamilton's harping on his attitude until last night.
Watch the celebration when the players pour off the bench. Larsson is the last man off and seems to almost be sighing and rolling his eyes as he lolls himself over the boards. It was the look of a man who didn't feel part of the team in its victory.
He finally got a start in the third line centre role he is best suited to be playing and even then he was being regularly nailed to the bench as ROR took his spot when his line was out there for draws.
He does not see himself as a role player, yet hasn't been able to cement a role above that, and likely won't given what's ahead of him on the roster. He will not accept another deal like the one he is on this year to play the role he is playing this year. Unless something changes he will sign with a team in Europe where he will be guaranteed a top six role.
Murray needs to trade him or he will be losing him for nothing this summer.

The PP is where the upgrade in personnel has had the most effect, but let's not forget Dave Barr, who had some nice numbers with mediocre talent in Jersey.
The PK would be better with better goaltending. Not blaming the goalies, but we haven't really had the big save factor.
Don't overlook the fact we've taken the second-fewest number of penalty minutes in the league.
This is a well-coached, disciplined team.

That might be true if you were speaking for yourself. Not true. We'd be just as initially-critical of Eichel, then like with Gionta, we'd realize how close the play was and how stupid the rule is and let it go. You act like this forum hasn't spent the last month saying Jack looked like crap. He did. Shiny new toy syndrome is not a problem on this board no matter how many times people say it is.
Over the course of the season, Gionta has received far more criticism than his play warrants, Eichel far less.
I think pA did a good job summarizing why.

There it is, the forum's bias in a nutshell. The just turned 19 year old gets some slack. The journeyman doesn't.

Best take on this yet.Not wrong, just not accurately. Off-sides, especially at the fastest level of the game, is almost impossible to see in real time. You have to take it for what it is. It simply isn't meant to be scrutinized beyond the level of real time human perception. Anything more intensive is a bastardization of the game.
And that is why affixing blame on a particular player on that play is a waste.
(Even though I suspect that if 12 was carrying the puck and 15 was offside a few posters would be singing a different tune.)

- These Sabres seem built more for grinding games like this than the free skates we saw out west.
-
I'm thinking he will eventually develop into a Patty type player ... more of a setup man for his Mogilny. IMO, Molginy was a pure goal scorer. Do we have our current version of Mogilny? I don't think so. Am I confident that our GM will find him? Not sure, but I bet that is what he is looking for now.
I was talking less style and more level of dominance.

All right. Let's re-open the wound. This board continues to suffer from the fact that the term tank was never defined here. How is tanking different than rebuilding? I think tanking is something that's done on a game by game basis in order to increase the chances of losing a particular game. I don't think it's that common. The Penguins brought up a minor league goaltender late in the season preceding the Lemieux draft. That's tanking. Rebuilding is an overall strategy. The Sabres did a rebuild that was about as dramatic as ever seen, but it still wasn't a tank.
Incoming... heads up... trigger warning, as the kids say... Dan Bylsma's player usage reeks of tanking more than anything Ted Nolan did. Better, but not too much better —GMTM
This is just silly.
I haven't noticed Legwand and Colaiacovo anchoring the power play.
No, and this is where any disappointment I have springs from. It's not Jack's fault, either. The media and scouts were the ones using the word.
Once I adjusted my expectations for Eichel, there's no real disappointment left. I'm happy to watch him grow, and have high hopes for his future. I just hope he gets to a Tavares/Stamkos/Getzlaf tier instead of expecting him to pass it.
This is where I am.
Jack at 19 is nowhere near Crosby, Lemieux, Gretzky, Orr at the same age. Not even close.
Still have hope for Perreault or Lafontaine level, but so far, to me, he screams Alex Mogilny.

The only reason that such an active effort to tank made sense is that there were two generational players available in the draft last year. We had to end in last place to ensure one of them. With there being only one of those players available this year, as well as the draft rules changing, it just doesn't make any sense to tank again.
Does everyone still think Eichel is a generational player?

Those two groups of people seem really, really different
Have you ever been to Alberta?

DD says Linus is in tonight
I need Linus tonight.. Make it so
Right now, Sabres goalie Linus Ullmark’s struggles are “mostly mental things,” the Swede said this morning. In his last six starts, the rookie is 0-4-2 and has allowed 18 goals. In his last three starts, his save percentage is .859. — Bill Hoppe

To trade the pick for that piece/pieces? Because if you're relying on that pick to be a missing piece, the timeline for winning gets extended out several more years. Barring some kind of wunderkind...
Also, not to be overly pessimistic, but is there precedent for a team finishing 30th two years in a row, and looking down the barrel of doing it a third time, being "one or two more really good pieces" away? Would those two pieces be Bobby Orr and Wayne Gretzky?
It's not exactly your scenario, but the Penguins the year they ended up picking Jordan Staal comes to mind.
I think the current angst is due to the fact the current stretch is the first time the Sabres have strung together three bad games in row all season, and they have done it against poorer teams.
Our other losing streaks involved being in the losing end despite some good hockey.
My take is that this is just an inevitable slump in a long season

I was rooting for Calgary to score with 5 seconds left so Ristolainen could get in the record books.
How many people could have scored a hattrick and gone -3?
Objectively, do you you really think he was worse than Bogo tonight?
Where is the horse we saw last year?
Terry Murray needs to teach Zach to box out.

I'll push back against enlightened philosophers rejecting tyranny being equated to unenlightened and tyrannical fanatics intending to kill innocents (their words, not mine).
And for those noble reasons, one should be willing to take risks to help those fleeing unenlightened and tyrannical fanatics.
(To your argument, examining and minimizing the risk is entirely reasonable, and shaming the cautious as bigots is shameful, even though fear and bigotry are close cousins)

Seems to me the US has a problem with allowing dangerous foreigners into the country.
Didn't a bunch of them eventually take up arms and overthrow the lawful government back in the late 18th century?
-
...the tank ain't over folks. Send Eichel down to Roch, let him learn the pro game in a non-toxic environment. Send Reinhart down too, and McCabe and Ullmark. Let the veterans go down with the sinking ship.
Wait a minute! You're not Ted Nolan, you're Randy Cunneyworth!

Surprised that outer core doesn't have Ullmark in it, TB
I am surprised by the number of posters who have given their hearts to Ullmark based on such a small sample size.
I am also surprised by the number have people who have already written off Lehner.
I like Ullmark, but Tim Murray gave up a first-rounder for Lehner, whose credentials are far superior.
Lehner was acquired to be the guy. Nothing Ullmark has done so far is going to prevent lehner from getting every chance to seize that opportunity.
Come January, Lehner will be here and Ullmark will be in Rochester.
This time next season, same thing.

Something is wrong with us having to give up a pick for Bylsma when practically no one else ever has for a fired coach and no one ever will now that the rule is being reversed. And was never intended to be used the way it was in the first place.
We should get a compensatory pick.

I thought Fasching/Larkin (not Eichel/whoever) was the best combo on the US WJC team last year.
He's a big body and a good skater who goes to the dirty areas, with enough talent to play with Jack or Sam moving forward.
At worst, he's Mike Grier.
(Then again, I fell in love with Erik Rasmussen at the WJCs, so what do I know?)
