  1. just re-read an article from last summer.

Is Murray talking about Crouse if we fall into 3rd overall?

"In a perfect world, I want a giant who skates fast and has tremendous skill and kills people,” Murray said. “But that’s not going to happen, right? We know that. We’re going to take the best player available early in the draft and may lean a little toward need with all those seconds. But I would like nothing better than to move those seconds for a higher pick or move those seconds and another player to get a young player who may have fallen out of favor with another team. We’re ready for all the options.”

He was very much talking perfect world generalities, not Crouse with the giant comment.

I suggest you listen to his interview on GR yesterday (I linked it in the Pysyk thread) and apply the bolded comment.

I heard it that he definitely prefers Hanifan to Crouse and Strome. Marner was not discussed.

  2. Bumping this thread because of some interesting comments by the coach and GM.

    According to Hoppe:

    http://www.buffalohockeybeat.com/sabres-patience-with-nikita-zadorov-could-be-wearing-thin/

“Last time he was up he was ready for primetime,” Nolan said about Pysyk. “I thought he played a real strong, solid game (Sunday). McCabe’s coming, too. As far as who’s ahead of who, Pysyk right now seems like he’s really ready.”

Nolan clearly wanted Pysyk to stay when the Sabres recalled him in December, although he stopped short of saying so.

“Personally, I like Mark, and I think he’s ready,” he said. “As a coach, you just got to make sure you’re as patient as the players are.”

Meanwhile, yesterday on WGR, Murray said:

    http://media.wgr550.com/a/102377300/2-23-tim-murray-on-hockey-hotline-with-kevin-and-andrew.htm?q=tim+Murray

"Mark showed his ability to get up the ice. This is all I ever asked of him. We know you can play a safe game. We know you are smart, you can skate and play a safe game. We want you to do more."

Many of us agree with Nolan.

Is Pysyk's presence in the minors blatant tanking? Or is it Murray's attempt to inspire the player to be better?

    A bit of both?

Does he have a future with this team?

Are these quotes an example of a split between Murray and Nolan?

  3. I did notice Djuda, that you did not say for which team ... the Sabres, or the other.

Come on, Mr. Firm Predictor, you can do better than that.

    :P

You see that everybody? It takes another coastal Canadian to appreciate all the subtleties of my posts.
  4. Minor incident handled appropriately.

A concern only in the context of an emerging pattern.

I think we all know guys like Nikita, people with great personalities and basically good hearts who have so much going for them their indiscretions are quickly forgiven and they never really had to worry too much about anything.

Most of them mature eventually if managed/coached/parented properly.

  5. Didn't get to watch much of the game last night, but did notice that Cody had almost a season low on ice time. Was he that bad? He went from 10-12 minutes a game to less than five against the Preds, or was it game circumstances?

He doesn't play the power play, kill penalties, shutdown the opposition when we need to protect a lead, create offence when we need a goal, provide a jolt of energy when the game turns stale, or stand up for his teammates when they start getting pushed around.

What role did you have in mind for him?

  6. I read something over the weekend -- I wish I could find it, recall where I saw it -- but it was a writer (McKenzie?) relating a story from a GM (Coyotes?) who explained how #fancystats helped confirm the organization's understanding of two players between whom the organization needed to choose -- a so-called shutdown D-man and a puck moving D-man who didn't play overly physical. The analytics helped the team understand that the shutdown guy was always lowering the boom on people and mixing it up in tight space because he wasn't moving the puck effectively (and therefore his ratio of defending versus possessing was like 70-30), while the puck mover didn't do a ton of defending because he was so frequently to the puck first and then made a good play with it (and his ratio of defending versus possessing was more like 30-70).

I will try to find it. It was just an interesting food-for-thought read.

Subtitle: why Mark Pysyk is better than most of the defencemen ahead of him on Buffalo's depth chart.

  7.

Do you think Kane, and not Girgensons, is now the heir apparent captain?

No, but as you said, don't fall I love with the kids.

On ice here, Kane will be an all-situations guy, which should translate to respect in the room.

In The Peg, he wanted to be that guy, but didn't or couldn't, possibly because of the team mix.

  8. Great posts Glove.

The whole idea of leadership really resonated with me after watching the press conference.

Kane and Bogosian were drafted to be the cornerstones of the Atlanta Thrasher franchise.

After the move, circumstances - mostly the acquisition of the Chicago guys and Wheeler - a situation evolved where good players and strong personalities effectively prevented them from stepping into leadership roles on and off the ice.

Murray remembered how good they were as juniors and is betting they can step into our on-ice leadership void, be the guys who are counted on to be the key guys when we need to make something happen. Since Drury and Briere, we haven't had guys who wanted to be the ice when the game is on the line. I get the sense Kane and Bogey want to be those guys and Murray is going to grant them that chance at a point in their careers they should be ready for it.

It's a smart move in terms of putting people in a position where they can succeed and I think there is a good chance it could pay off.

I'm like Kane: I can't wait until next year.
