Looks like a hockey trade to me. Ducks bump up their skill quotient, Habs get a little harder to play against.
-
Bumping this thread because of some interesting comments by the coach and GM.
According to Hoppe:
http://www.buffalohockeybeat.com/sabres-patience-with-nikita-zadorov-could-be-wearing-thin/
“Last time he was up he was ready for primetime,” Nolan said about Pysyk. “I thought he played a real strong, solid game (Sunday). McCabe’s coming, too. As far as who’s ahead of who, Pysyk right now seems like he’s really ready.”
Nolan clearly wanted Pysyk to stay when the Sabres recalled him in December, although he stopped short of saying so.
“Personally, I like Mark, and I think he’s ready,” he said. “As a coach, you just got to make sure you’re as patient as the players are.”
Meanwhile, yesterday on WGR, Murray said:
"Mark showed his ability to get up the ice. This is all I ever asked of him. We know you can play a safe game. We know you are smart, you can skate and play a safe game. We want you to do more."
Many of us agree with Nolan.
Is Pysyk's presence in the minors blatant tanking? Or is it Murray's attempt to inspire the player to be better?
A bit of both?
Does he have a future with this team?
Are these quotes an example of a split between Murray and Nolan?

Chris Stewart is the six for sure, the four is probably Torrey Mitchell.
Not a lot of demand for goalies, Bennie and Mess are Bennie and the Mess.
-
You see that everybody? It takes another coastal Canadian to appreciate all the subtleties of my posts.I did notice Djuda, that you did not say for which team ... the Sabres, or the other.
Come on, Mr. Firm Predictor, you can do better than that.
:P

Minor incident handled appropriately.
A concern only in the context of an emerging pattern.
I think we all know guys like Nikita, people with great personalities and basically good hearts who have so much going for them their indiscretions are quickly forgiven and they never really had to worry too much about anything.
Most of them mature eventually if managed/coached/parented properly.

Firm prediction: Neuvirth will be one of the two goalies in uniform when the Sabres drop the puck for game one in October.

Didn't get to watch much of the game last night, but did notice that Cody had almost a season low on ice time. Was he that bad? He went from 10-12 minutes a game to less than five against the Preds, or was it game circumstances?
He doesn't play the power play, kill penalties, shutdown the opposition when we need to protect a lead, create offence when we need a goal, provide a jolt of energy when the game turns stale, or stand up for his teammates when they start getting pushed around.
What role did you have in mind for him?

I read something over the weekend -- I wish I could find it, recall where I saw it -- but it was a writer (McKenzie?) relating a story from a GM (Coyotes?) who explained how #fancystats helped confirm the organization's understanding of two players between whom the organization needed to choose -- a so-called shutdown D-man and a puck moving D-man who didn't play overly physical. The analytics helped the team understand that the shutdown guy was always lowering the boom on people and mixing it up in tight space because he wasn't moving the puck effectively (and therefore his ratio of defending versus possessing was like 70-30), while the puck mover didn't do a ton of defending because he was so frequently to the puck first and then made a good play with it (and his ratio of defending versus possessing was more like 30-70).
I will try to find it. It was just an interesting food-for-thought read.
Subtitle: why Mark Pysyk is better than most of the defencemen ahead of him on Buffalo's depth chart.

I didn't think it was critical in the negative sense, more like an honest assessment of his game..
And Crouse was simply a power forward.
I did hear Eichel and McDavid number one centre, Hanifan number one defenceman.
Marner wasn't mentioned, but we aren't picking Crouse or Strome over Hanifan.

Pyzik looks good
on pkThis kid is an NHLer.
Looking forward to him being a regular next year.
-
Bogosian was just trying to find a way to get a rest. :P
-
Wouldn't it be a good thing if Neuwirth actually was our goalie of a future? He sure has responded when he's been handed the crease.
Zemgus showing no pain.

I am starting to wonder if Nolan's ice time choices are some kind of statement to Murray.
-
Pysyk and McCabe will need to play more in the third to save Bogey's life.
EDIT: ThirtyEight beat me too it.
-
First time watching the Preds this year.
Was not expecting to see the Sabres get this many chances the entire game.
-
Larsson with two goal, a cheap shot on Weber and a broken face as a result.
An exhausted Neuvirth carried out on a stretcher

I believe it's called manipulating the roster.

Do you think Kane, and not Girgensons, is now the heir apparent captain?
No, but as you said, don't fall I love with the kids.
On ice here, Kane will be an all-situations guy, which should translate to respect in the room.
In The Peg, he wanted to be that guy, but didn't or couldn't, possibly because of the team mix.
-
He'll head home to B.C. to rehab with Kane.
The Sabres will expect him to kick Kane into shape, but we will know that failed when Gorges gets a Twitter account.
-
Watching the Leafs/Jets, everyone is drooling over Myers (who now has five points in five games).
I'm not seeing a player significantly different than what we saw here. I am seeing a team around him that can support what he does.
I am so desperate to add some talent.

Great posts Glove.
The whole idea of leadership really resonated with me after watching the press conference.
Kane and Bogosian were drafted to be the cornerstones of the Atlanta Thrasher franchise.
After the move, circumstances - mostly the acquisition of the Chicago guys and Wheeler - a situation evolved where good players and strong personalities effectively prevented them from stepping into leadership roles on and off the ice.
Murray remembered how good they were as juniors and is betting they can step into our on-ice leadership void, be the guys who are counted on to be the key guys when we need to make something happen. Since Drury and Briere, we haven't had guys who wanted to be the ice when the game is on the line. I get the sense Kane and Bogey want to be those guys and Murray is going to grant them that chance at a point in their careers they should be ready for it.
It's a smart move in terms of putting people in a position where they can succeed and I think there is a good chance it could pay off.
I'm like Kane: I can't wait until next year.

The amazing run of the Leafs is a good reminder about the psychology of the Shart.
You aren't really in the race until the entire organization buys in.
But once it does...

McKenzie not putting any cold water on the O'Reilly rumours:

Important stuff starts at about 4:40.

He was very much talking perfect world generalities, not Crouse with the giant comment.
I suggest you listen to his interview on GR yesterday (I linked it in the Pysyk thread) and apply the bolded comment.
I heard it that he definitely prefers Hanifan to Crouse and Strome. Marner was not discussed.
