As of this moment, I am totally open to signing Moulson to a four-year $16 million deal.
He won't sign it because this summer he will get at least a five-year, $25 million deal.
I'd rather trade him for the going rate - which should be at least a late first-rounder - and spend my money elsewhere.
If he clicks with Hodgson and Ennis for the next three months, I may change my mind; as you say, we will have to pay some veterans.
But at this point I do not see him as a contributor when the team gets good.
Therefore, I would rather have a lesser free agent and his trade return.
Also, have you noticed the analytic talk Ted has been spouting lately?
I really think the Sabres may be taking a serious Moneyball approach to their free agent spending (recent Thomas Vanek rumour notwithstanding).

Sabres could easily go the 2011 Florida route in the summer.
After gutting their team for picks at the deadline, Dale Tallon acquired Versteeg, Upshall, Fleischmann, Jovanovski, Theodore, Goc and Bergenheim and took on a big salary dump in Brian Campbell. Essentially, they overpaid a bunch of second- and third-raters to hold the fort until their kids made the jump.
Hasn't exactly worked out for them, but Freeman is right — opportunities will be there for Buffalo, or any team with lots of cap space.

So you realize the dismantling of the tired post-lockout core that began when Connolly was allowed to walk in the summer of 2011 will end by this year's trade deadline.
Connolly, Gaustad, Roy, Pominville, Hecht, Sekera, Vanek, Miller — all gone.
And the only man left standing in blue and gold will be Drew Stafford.
-
Roy blows a gasket, Miller to the Avs by the weekend. :P

Nice post Ghost. Thanks for the insight.

Vanek was a good player and will continue to be.
But he is - and should be - an ex-Sabre.
I won't miss him at all.

Not sure the leafs bit is important.
I would hope Darcy offered him everyone before he pulled the trigger.
-
When do we get to the point where he will be waived?
He seems to have no future with the team, there appears to be no trade market for him, and he is very close to being outside the team's top 23 NHL roster. His coach gave him a second chance after losing faith in him last year, but he failed to take advantage.
Should he be dressed ahead of Kaleta or Tropp? We're probably better off giving Adam or Armia his role.
It sucks that Darcy didn't reel in a second rounder when he had the chance, but there is a time you have to swallow your pride and cut your losses. I think it's here. When will Darcy agree?

Pegula was apparently willing to spend that kind of cash on Shane Doan.
And, if the purge continues, he will need to spend on somebody to reach the floor.
And he will have to grossly overpay to obtain anyone of substance...

@ NS
Rangers are struggling on the ice and with the cap.
Pegula will have the dollars, the cap room and a burning need and desire for a leader that is a model of difficult to play against.
No one will outspend him, or will want to. And he will be able to sell hard the idea of bringing Western New York hockey fans to the promised land.
Seven years, $7 million per for Callahan to come home?
I don't think it will happen either, but you better believe it is on TPeg's radar.
-
Look for Stafford's game to pick up now that he will be getting Vanek's prime minutes.

Looks strong in scoring and power wingers, which is certainly an area of need.
-
The other unspoken part of this rebuild is the cap space being created.
It's going to take at least a year or two before they will capitalize, but the Sabres are going to be in a position to take advantage of other team's cap issues moving forward - they'll have the room, the will and the prospects to offer.
They may have to overpay for a few free agents next summer just to reach the floor.
-
Darcy made reference in his presser (twice, if I'm not mistaken) to the attraction of acquiring the first rounder now as an asset he could use later to trade for a player.
Miller and the Islanders first could be an enticing package for someone.
Wouldn't surprise me if he's had talks where a mid-range first may be the missing link.
I will be absolutely stunned if Miller is still here by December and I believe it's coming sooner.

Best of luck to Thomas.
Buffalo's best skater of the past 10 years.
How soon until the best Sabre of the past decade follows him out the door?
-
Basically the same price as Pommer's.
Moulson will be flipped for a Larsson, or another pick.
-
I'm not sure how Thad is able to stand up.

But your team president has said that is the plan. Your GM said to prepare to suffer.
Can you imagine what it is like to be in that locker room right now? Who in their right mind with more than a handful of NHL games in them is going to want to go out there and risk their bodies for a team that won't even get them the support to try and win? Thankfully Miller is on the verge of free agency and it's an Olympic year. He's being a good soldier. Can you imagine what his post game pressers would be like if he was on year 2 of a 6 year contract? We could take out the windmills from the shore from the amount of air power his WTF Waves would have generated by now.
It's only a matter of a month or so before the kids even stop trying. The know they have secure jobs because the team doesn't care about getting better. How in the world are these guys expected to progress when you signal to them it's Mickey mouse time, and you give no incentive for the guys who actually have a backbone to go out there and give everything they have? Sooner than later, guys will start going for individual stats. Who cares if we lose 7-3 and Hodgson is a -37....Cody is going to want those 30 goals come hell or high water.
As more and more national guys get comfortable taking shots at the franchise, hopefully Pegula wakes up.
This is exactly what is on the verge of happening and exactly why a message needs to be sent.

I was OK with Ron last year because he seemed to give some structure to the sinking ship.
A despite his bland personality, he also seemed to say the right things about accountability and playing for each other.
I was certainly willing to give him a chance and was comfortable with the hire.
But I am starting to think he is a big part of the problem.
The lack of forecheck, the passive play in front of both nets, the abysmal passing on the rush, the poorly timed dump-ins.
The indecisiveness, the slow starts, the crappy power play, the sticking with ineffective line combinations.
We are not a talented team but these are things that can be improved by coaching.
Can any coach in a major sport survive eight regulation wins in 40-plus games?
-
Kid was a top-ranked bantam who disappointed somewhat in his early junior career.
Given that he plays with grit and edginess suitable for a third-liner, those numbers are a huge bonus.
May be getting a look for Team Canada in the upcoming WJC.

Something special about seeing a team finally turning the corner.
Regardless of how the season finishes, the Bills are starting to do things the right way.
-
Mario earning his money. Two massive plays.
Can Fred Jackson skate? What a warrior.
-
Is Risto even making the trip? He was apparently still in Buffalo last night, so it may only be a paper transaction.
They are probably just waiting to seal the deal on the Miller /Myers for Yak and a first trade.

Big picture gentlemen.
The Bills are entertaining, seem to be on the upswing, and are in every game, despite a ridiculous run of injuries.
Next year, with a year of the system under their belts and another draft to build some depth, they may be a playoff team.
Nice to see dawn coming for one of our teams.
Stafford needs to go
