Hmmm, three D and one who may or may not want to come to North America in the top 10? Do the Sabres take the D if they get pick #3? WTF, another D man isn't going to put this team over the top. If they get 3 or 4 they should trade down and go for one of the centers. Hardly the outcome one expects right now...unless the Sabres win the lotto, I can see a draft-day let-down brewing.

If we pick 3-5, I'd be happy to take kylington or Hanifan, they're top pairing defencemen. We'll have two othe picks to add more scoring.

Other than the "safe" thing (which I don't really understand), I can't really disagree with any of this. All I'm saying is that eventually, we are going to have to embrace winning and the present over losing and the future.

I'm not against winning this year. To me, it's a sign our kids are getting better. I'm not against trading some of our picks and prospects for a good player, as long as that player is young enough.

I'm against mortgaging cap space and prospects to turn us from terrible to pretender.

It's about amassing enough good players who will hit their peak around the same time, then augmenting them with the missing pieces.

We're still on the first phase, but we can move into phase two next year.

You need to fax out the memo again, because I do not get the impression many of your fellow tankers see it that way. Even in the media, the tank is presented with McDavid and Eichel as the objectives. It's not very frequent that the clarification is made that it is unlikely the Sabres will acquire either as a result of tanking.

Only here on SS do I see the more savvy tankers admit to this reality, and even some of those do so in a seemingly reticent manner.

This is the part of the tank that bothers me greatly: it seems many folks believe, beyond rationality, that the end game is a top 2 pick.

Claude responded very well, but I want to echo many others on agreeing with his response.

McEichel is the perfect storm. But what the Sabre-style tank is really about is acquiring enough girgensons, Ristolainens and (hopefully) Reinharts to make us the Detroit of the next decade.

  4. Last year was horrifically, hellishly bad.

The three previous years were a purgatory of stagnation because we weren't good enough and (false hope of Leino and Ehrhoff notwithstanding) we weren't getting better.

This year will be bad, but it will be better, because we will finally show some signs of moving forward.

You can call it marketing or fooling a gullible fan base. I think a scorched earth policy was overdue.

And the price of last season and the coming season is something that needed to be paid.

  5. That is an interesting look at the Sabres contract situation to be sure. Moulson and Gionta are the most interesting aspects of this, with the date on Gionta's NMC shifting over to a limited NTC, I have to wonder if Murray wouldn't be looking to move them after the 2/3 season mark as well. Time limit on instilling character and leadership qualities on the kids?

Maybe both sides are open to shipping Gionta to a cup contender for one last run.

  6. After last season my bad feelings towards stafford have faded somewhat though :)

Yeah, prior to last season he was the poster child for everything that was wrong with Darcy's Sabres.

But with all the changes and a steady diet of Omarks, Konopkas and McBains he's just kinda faded in terms of being a focus for the fans at all.

The following are all off the books after this season:

    -Stewart

    -Stafford

    -Mitchell

    -Kaleta

    -Flynn

    -Meszaros

    -Neuvirth

    -Enroth

    -Grigorenko

    -Schaller

    -Pysyk

    -Larsson

    -Hackett

    -Dalpe

    -Strachan

    -Samuels-Thomas

    -Gauthier-Leduc

    -Sundher

    -Lieuwen

    -Varone

    -Ellis

    -Bagnall

Some will stay, many will go either through free agency or trade. There's no need to worry about the number of contracts. If by some chance he's in the way and we can't find a home for him, he could always be bought out if absolutely necessary. That would cost the team about 50 cents. At the end of the day, he's either a 7th defenseman in the NHL or an older guy who can provided a bit of guidance to some of the AHL rookies fresh out of college or juniors.

You know the second guy on that list ain't going nowhere.

Now I feel much more comfortable. Thank you.

    How about now?

  8.

He's only going to be skating for the Stanley Cup champs the next 2 years.

And if he is what you say, who's to say Zadorov and his "looks slow out there" isn't the 5th best defensive prospect in 2 years?

    That's the problem.

The team is where it is....and I am all for checking the kids out and hoping....I just think you are nuts if you are running to the bank off any of these guys.

I don't see a lot of running to the bank, mostly just some guarded optimism, mostly due to the sheer numbers of prospects, and the way the industry perceives our prospect pool.

From my own perspective, there are no guarantees, and there will surely be disappointments, but as a semi-knowledgeable fan I need to be able to get behind something. I see things here I can get behind.

  9. To Drane's comments on Risto's physicality.

I loved the battle he and Lemieux had going on all night.

I loved that Lemieux targeted the biggest, best defenceman on the opposing team and went out of his way to make him miserable.

I loved how Risto reacted. He gave as good as he got and used the adversity to elevate his game.

I loved how after the game they embraced and talked for a long time going off the ice.

This is what this camp should be about. This is what I wanted to see.

  10. Watching college kids on the driving range at Springville CC and projecting out to how they'll play at the Masters.

Sorry, not buying into any of this. Wake me up when they're doing it on MSG and at MSG (against the Rangers, not during a Billy Joel concert).

    —PADowner

I get excited because these kids are all we've got and there is no point being a fan without hope.

    But PA's are wise words.

Risto looked like Rob Blake out there.

Has he grown that much, or is it because of who he was playing against?

  11. The 2013 draft may go down as day that turned the Buffalo Sabres around.

In the first round it looks like we got two NHL defencemen each of which has first-pairing upside.

In Carrier, Fasching, Compher and Baptiste, we got four guys who are very likely to play in the NHL.

Bailey and Hurley are not sure things, but they have middle-six skill sets.

Possler, Peterson, Florentino and Malone are longshots but each has outplayed where he was drafted.

Most drafts are successful if you get two NHLers. It's hard to say where any of these players top out, but we could end up with a third of a team.
